Mumps epidemiology in Cuba between 2004 and 2015.

Vaccination with the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine decreased the mumps incidence in Cuba, but in 2006 and 2007 an outbreak with more than 1000 laboratory confirmed cases occurred, mainly among high school and university students. The objective of the study was to investigate mumps epidemiology in Cuba between 2004 and 2015 and provide an in-depth laboratory characterization of selected samples from mumps patients. Samples from 116 cases (throat swabs, urines, paired acute and convalescent serum samples) were tested for mumps-specific IgM antibodies by ELISA, in a hemagglutination inhibiti

Trends in digestive cancer mortality, Cuba 1987-2008.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal malignancies are among the most common cancers suffered by Cubans. The purpose of our study is to analyse the evolution of digestive cancer mortality in Cuba. METHODS: Mortality data for this study were obtained from the National Medical Records and Health Statistic Bureau. Trends (1987-2008) in age-standardized cancer mortality were described using joinpoint regression. RESULTS: In the data set of digestive cancer mortality, in the period 1987-2008, colorectal/anal cancer was the most frequent cause of cancer mortality in males and females. In men, a rise in mor

HIV/AIDS in Cuba: a rights-based analysis.

The common assertion that Cuba's achievements in HIV/AIDS control have come at a cost in human rights is reinforced by US hostility toward its small neighbor. Nevertheless, a rights-based analysis may be one useful way of examining the actual Cuban experience. By reference to the United Nation's Guidelines on HIV/AIDS and Human Rights, this paper examines the Cuban experience as it relates to the themes of quarantine and personal freedom; privacy in testing and tracing; education, participation, and non-discrimination; and the availability of AIDS treatment. The paper concludes that Cuba's qua

Incidence of childhood cancer in Cuba (1986-1990).

Cancer is an infrequent disease in childhood. However, it is responsible for 13.06% of child deaths between 1 and 14 years in Cuba. The aim of our work was to describe the incidence of childhood cancer in the period 1986 to 1990 using data reported to the National Cancer Registry (NCR) of Cuba. All cancer cases between 0 and 14 years of age reported to the NCR in the period 1986 to 1990, were included. The cases were classified histologically, by age and gender. Average age-specific and age-standardized rates were calculated; 1428 children were registered, an average of 286 each year, with a m

Cuba: plenty of care, few condoms, no corruption.

The health system in Cuba guarantees accessibility to the entire population, is free of charge, and covers the spectrum from vaccinations to sophisticated interventions. The results are impressive: Cuba's health figures are on a par with developed countries that have 20 times the budget. The country is experiencing a difficult period because of the collapse and loss of support from the Soviet Union; over 30 years' trade embargo by the United States; and the gradual change from a centrally planned economy towards more of a free market system. Shortages are experienced in every sector, and maint

Spatiotemporal diffusion of the 2024 Oropouche outbreak in Cuba.

Oropouche virus (OROV) was reported in Cuba in May 2024 and rapidly spread throughout the country. Here, among 147 reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction-positive cases identified from May to July 2024, we sequenced 39 whole genomes of OROV. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that all sequences formed a monophyletic cluster nested within the reassortant lineage, named OROVBR-2015-2025, which has been circulating extensively in Brazil since 2023. Additional phylogeographic analyses demonstrated that the Cuban subclade probably originated from a single viral introduction from the Brazilian

Poliomyelitis and its elimination in Cuba: an historical overview.

INTRODUCTION: Polio was first detected in Cuba in the late 19th century among residents of the US community on the Isla de Pinos (Isle of Pines, now Isle of Youth), apparently introduced through migration from the USA. The first outbreak was reported in 1906 on the Isle, with the first epidemic reported in the former province of Las Villas in 1909. The epidemics subsequently intensified, by 1934 becoming periodic every four to five years, and accompanied by high morbidity, mortality and crippling sequelae, primarily among children. OBJECTIVE: To review and analyze the history of polio and its

The right to health care for transsexual people in Cuba.

Gender identity is a sociocultural construct based (in nearly every society) on a binary norm: female and male. Transsexual individuals suffer from intense family and social discrimination because they express a dissident sexuality incongruent with this norm. They assert they feel trapped in a body that does not belong to them, so they seek help from health professionals to modify their bodies, to "adapt their bodies to their minds." This essay discusses health care for transsexual persons in Cuba from a human rights perspective that does not pathologize their gender identification.

The epidemiological impact of antimeningococcal B vaccination in Cuba.

The incidence of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) before (1984-1988) and after (1989-1994), a nationwide intervention with VA-MENGOC-BC vaccination started in 1989, was compared. The prevaccination period incidence density (ID> 8.8/10(5) year-person) was higher than the postvaccination ID (ID< 6.5/10(5) year-person). The percentage proportional differences from the start to the end of each period of ID in the vaccinal period was higher (87%) than the prevaccinal (37%) with significant differences among vaccinated groups (< 25 years old). A break-point (Chow test) was confirmed by the decre

Role of the USA in shortage of food and medicine in Cuba.

For over 30 years an embargo by the USA has restricted Cuba's ability to purchase foods and medicines. In 1992, the USA enacted the Cuban Democracy Act (CDA), which "exempted" the sale of medicines from the embargo. However, the implementation of the CDA's requirements and the intensification of the embargo as a result of the passage of the Helms-Burton Act in March, 1996, have undermined the purpose of the medicine exemption. The resultant lack of food and medicine to Cuba contributed to the worst epidemic of neurological disease this century. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights of

Tuberculosis in the Republic of Cuba: its possible elimination.

SETTING: Tuberculosis elimination is a priority in most developed countries, although the AIDS epidemic and drug resistance are a handicap in some of them. Tuberculosis is an even greater problem in developing countries. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the epidemiological situation in Cuba, the trend of new cases reported for 1979-91 by clinical category and age group is described. DESIGN: A simple regression model was fitted to the time series data on 'new case' rates taken from the national surveillance system. The annual variation percentage was estimated. RESULTS: From 1979-91 tuberculosis decre

[Alagille's syndrome in Cuba. A report of 9 cases].

Alagille's syndrome or arteriohepatic dysplasia has been described in Cuba in nine patients between nine months and 12 years of age (8 males and one female). Among the clinical features we found five major abnormalities: chronic cholestasis with neonatal jaundice (9/9), peculiar facies (9/9), peripheral pulmonary artery hypoplasia associated with cardiac murmur (6/9), butter-fly-like arch defects (4/9), and posterior embryotoxon (6/7). Two children had a severe xanthomatosis. Laparoscopy showed green hepatomegaly depending on the degree of cholestasis, and only one patient had incipient signs

[Serologic marker as indicator of no circulation of poliovirus in Cuba].

The surveillance of the circulation of the wild poliovirus is an essential element for the eradication of poliomyelitis. The Pan-American Health Organization emphasises on the etiological study of acute flaccid paralysis in order to achieve this aim. The characteristics of our program against this entity allowed to use the presence of antibodies in a sample obtained in February from the infant population born on July during the previous year as criteria to know the circulation of wild poliovirus. In 727 infants studies in the country (5% of the total number of births during July), 99.1% showed

Vaccines and Public Trust: Containing COVID-19 in Cuba.

As 2021 drew to a close, Cuba struggled to contain the highly transmissible omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2, braced for a new wave of infections and kept a close eye on other variants of concern popping up around the world-a common experience to countries everywhere as we head into the second year of the pandemic. In Cuba, however, there is one marked difference making all the difference: by early January, 87% of the population was fully vaccinated using a three-dose schedule of vaccines developed and produced on the island.[1] This massive vaccination campaign is complemented by a rapid booster
