Culex interfor and Culex saltanensis (Diptera: Culicidae) are susceptible and competent to transmit St. Louis encephalitis virus (Flavivirus: Flaviviridae) in central Argentina.

BACKGROUND: St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) is endemic and autochthonous on the American continent. Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus is a vector of SLEV; however, Culex interfor and Culex saltanensis have also been found to be naturally infected with SLEV. The aim of this study was to determine the vector competence of C. interfor and C. saltanensis for SLEV from Argentina compared with C. p. quinquefasciatus. METHODS: Female of the Culex species were orally infected by feeding on viraemic chicks that had been inoculated with SLEV. Abdomens, legs and saliva blood-fed mosquitoes were analyse

The invasion of the midgut of the mosquito Culex (Culex) quinquefasciatus Say, 1823 by the helminth Litomosoides chagasfilhoi Moraes Neto, Lanfredi and De Souza, 1997.

The Litomosoides chagasfilhoi helminth was studied as a model for microfilaria invasion of the midgut of Culex quinquefasciatus mosquito, vector of Wuchereria bancrofti helminth, causative agent of the human filariasis. Histology and transmission and scanning electron microscopy were utilized to show the topography of mosquito midgut invasion by the helminth. An analysis of midguts dissected at different time points after a blood meal demonstrated that the microfilariae interacted and crossed the peritrophic matrix and the midgut epithelium of C. quinquefasciatus. The microfilariae invaded pre

Modeling the impact of variable climatic factors on the crossover of Culex restauns and Culex pipiens (Diptera: culicidae), vectors of West Nile virus in Illinois.

The aim of this study was to model the impact of temperature on the timing of the seasonal shift in relative proportion of Culex restuans Theobald and Culex pipiens L. in Illinois. The temporal pattern of West Nile virus (WNV) and St. Louis encephalitis virus transmission in the midwest exhibits a late summer to early fall peak in activity, which parallels the temporal increase in the abundance of Cx. pipiens. The daily number of egg rafts oviposited by each species has been monitored at multiple surveillance sites in Urbana-Champaign in central Illinois for more than 13 years. The time when t

Microclimate habitats of Culex mosquitoes in urban desert environments.

Culex mosquitoes are important vectors of West Nile virus, and, as small-bodied ectotherms, are sensitive to temperature. This is especially important for juvenile stages, which are confined to the body of water where they hatched and are unable to relocate for thermoregulation. In an urban desert like Maricopa County, Arizona, where Culex tarsalis and Culex quinquefasciatus are prominent, the macroclimate is strongly influenced by the urban heat island effect where larval thermal maxima are frequently exceeded. Understanding the local temperatures (microclimates) of sites that mosquitoes choo

Population Genetics of Culex tritaeniorhynchus (Diptera: Culicidae) in Türkiye.

PURPOSE: Mosquitoes are important vectors of pathogens that can affect humans and animals. Culex tritaeniorhynchus is an important vector of arboviruses such as Japanese encephalitis virus, West Nile virus among various human and animal communities. These diseases are of major public health concern and can have huge economic and health burdens in prevalent countries. Although populations of this important mosquito species have been detected in the Mediterranean and Aegean regions of Türkiye; little is known about its population structure. Our study is to examine the population genetics and gen

Culex Tarsalis Mosquitoes as Vectors of Highlands J Virus.

Highlands J virus (HJV) is an alphavirus closely related to western equine encephalitis virus (WEEV) and eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV). HJV is an avian pathogen with the potential for disruption of poultry operations, but is not known to cause human or equine disease. HJV has only been identified in the eastern United States and is thought to have a transmission cycle similar to that of EEEV involving Culiseta melanura mosquitoes and birds. However, HJV is more genetically similar to WEEV and it remains unclear if it may be transmitted by Culex species mosquitoes like WEEV. Seven st

Cross resistances in spinosad-resistant Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae).

A Culex quinquefasciatus Say colony was selected for 45 generations at LC70-90 levels using Natular XRG, a granular formulation of 2.5% spinosad for induction of spinosad resistance. Resistance to spinosad was noticed in early generations (F1-F9). Resistance levels increased gradually from generations F11-F35, and elevated significantly from generation F37 through F47, when resistance ratios reached 2,845-2,907-fold at LC50 and 11,948-22,928-fold at LC90 The spinosad-resistant Cx. quinquefasciatus colony was found not to be cross-resistant to Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti), a combina

Avian host-selection by Culex pipiens in experimental trials.

Evidence from field studies suggests that Culex pipiens, the primary mosquito vector of West Nile virus (WNV) in the northeastern and north central United States, feeds preferentially on American robins (Turdus migratorius). To determine the contribution of innate preferences to observed preference patterns in the field, we conducted host preference trials with a known number of adult female C. pipiens in outdoor cages comparing the relative attractiveness of American robins with two common sympatric bird species, European starling, Sternus vulgaris and house sparrow, Passer domesticus. Host s

Plaque formation by alphavirus (Getah) in Culex Mosquito cells.

Plaques were formed by Getah virus (an Alphavirus) which had been grown in BHK cells and passaged once in Culex cells before inoculation of Culex cell cultures. Plaques were not produced either by Getah or Japanese encephalitis (JE) viruses which had been passaged only in BHK cells. Plaque counts in Culex cell monolayers were almost the same as in BHK cells.

Antiviral RNAi Response in Culex quinquefasciatus-Derived HSU Cells.

Culex spp. mosquitoes are important vectors of viruses, such as West Nile virus, Eastern equine encephalitis virus and Rift valley fever virus. However, their interactions with innate antiviral immunity, especially RNA interference (RNAi), are not well known. Most research on RNAi pathways in mosquitoes is focused on the tropical vector mosquito Aedes aegypti. Here, we investigated the production of arbovirus-specific small RNAs in Cx. quinquefasciatus-derived HSU cells. Furthermore, by silencing RNAi-related proteins, we investigated the antiviral role of these proteins for two different arbo

What's Eating You? Culex Mosquitoes and West Nile Virus.

West Nile virus (WNV) commonly presents cutaneously as a maculopapular rash on the trunk and extremities that most often appears around the time of defervescence and may serve as a positive prognostic indicator. Several laboratory tests can aid in diagnosis of WNV, including an IgM enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), but an antibody response may not be detectable for up to 8 days after symptom onset. Taking a comprehensive history in any patient presenting with a generalized maculopapular rash, fever, nonspecific symptoms, or neurologic changes can aid the astute dermatologist in prompt

Larvicidal effect from different Annonaceae species on Culex quinquefasciatus.

The recent outbreaks of mosquito-borne diseases highlighted the pivotal importance of mosquito vector control in tropical areas worldwide. Several strategies have been developed to control vector populations and disease transmission in endemic areas. The steps to obtain natural active compounds involve the pre-selection in a biological model and subsequently evaluation on specific models. The present study reports the evaluation of 35 extracts, fractions, and essential oils obtained from five species from the Annonaceae family on Artemia salina and Culex quinquefasciatus. The A. salina results

Insecticidal Effect of Solenostemma argel Extracts Against Culex pipiens.

Of the various plant extracts from 10 plant species tested against larvae of Culex pipiens in the laboratory, only extracts from Solenostemma argel exhibited larvicidal activity. A chloroform leaf extract of S. argel exhibited relatively high activity with a lethal concentration causing 50% mortality (LC50) of 15.89 ppm, while chloroform and ethyl acetate extracts of S. argel fruits were 19.70 and 19.52 ppm, respectively. The chloroform fruit extract at 10 ppm reduced the hatchability of Cx. pipiens eggs by 20%, whereas the chloroform leaf extract was found to be less effective (5% reduction).

Culex territans mosquitoes as a vector of Giant Anuran Trypanosomes.

BACKGROUND: Amphibian populations are declining worldwide, in part due to diseases caused by viruses, fungi, andparasites. Giant Anuran Trypanosomes (GATs) are parasites that affect frogs worldwide and require a vector to betransmitted. Culex territans is an amphibian-feeding mosquito suspected to be a vector of trypanosomes, but this hasnot previously been confirmed. METHODS: In this study, we tested blood-fed Cx. territans and blood from their primary anuran hosts, Rana clamitans and R. catesbeiana, in southwest Virginia. Additionally, we tested potential routes of transmission from the mos

Detection of Japanese Encephalitis Virus in Culex Mosquitoes in Singapore.

Mosquito-borne flaviviruses are emerging pathogens of an increasing global public health concern because of their rapid increase in geographical range and the impact of climate change. Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) and West Nile virus (WNV) are of concern because of the risk of reemergence and introduction by migratory birds. In Singapore, human WNV infection has never been reported and human JEV infection is rare. Four sentinel vector surveillance sites were established in Singapore to understand the potential risk posed by these viruses. Surveillance was carried out from August 2011 to D

Effects of avian Plasmodium exposure on the microbiota of Culex pipiens.

Malaria parasites (Plasmodium spp.) are mosquito-borne parasites that infect humans and wildlife. Several studies support the role of mosquito microbiota as a major driver of Plasmodium transmission, although studies on wildlife malaria are typically neglected. Here, we used a 16S rRNA metabarcoding approach to assess whether the exposure to avian Plasmodium parasites affects the microbiota of their natural vector, Culex pipiens. Mosquitoes, captured in the field as larvae and grown in the laboratory, were allowed to feed on house sparrows (Passer domesticus) naturally infected with Plasmodium
