Long-term immunologically competent human peripheral lymphoid tissue cultures in a 3D bioreactor.

Peripheral lymphoid organs (PLOs), the primary sites of development of adaptive immune responses, display a complex structural organization reflecting separation of cellular subsets (e.g., T and B lymphocytes) and functional compartments which is critical for immune function. The generation of in vitro culture systems capable of recapitulating salient features of PLOs for experimental, biotechnological, and clinical applications would be highly desirable, but has been hampered so far by the complexity of these systems. We have previously developed a three-dimensional bioreactor system for long

REACH-Meharry community-campus partnership: developing culturally competent health care providers.

An important national health care effort is elimination of racial and ethnic disparities in six specific conditions: infant mortality, cancer screening and management, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, human immunodeficiency virus infection, and child and adult immunizations. To address this concern, several health entities in Nashville, Tennessee responded to a grant initiative from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to develop a Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH) demonstration project. The resulting award is the Nashville REACH 2010 Project, charged to devel

Pre-maturational culture promotes the developmental competence of bovine oocytes derived from an 8-day in vitro growth culture system.

In this study, we evaluated the effects of pre-maturational culture (pre-IVM) on the developmental competence of bovine oocytes derived from an 8-day in vitro growth (IVG) culture system. IVG oocytes were subjected to 5 h pre-IVM before in vitro maturation, followed by in vitro fertilization (IVF). The proportion of oocytes that progressed to the germinal vesicle breakdown stage was similar between groups with and without pre-IVM. Although metaphase II oocytes and cleavage rates after IVF were similar regardless of pre-IVM culture, the blastocyst rate was significantly higher in the group with

A Spanish Immersion Course With Simulations for Empowering Nursing Students to Develop Culturally Competent Care.

Communication and cultural competency improve patient outcomes and reduce health disparities. Communication is a key skill in culturally competent care. However, most nursing students do not have the opportunity to practice nursing care in languages other than English during their education. An undergraduate elective nursing course integrates scaffolding simulations, cultural competency concepts, and technology-based Spanish-language learning tools to improve Spanish-language proficiency and enhance cultural competency for the care of Spanish-speaking patients. The course uses an innovative de

Health Care Needs of Deaf Signers: The Case for Culturally Competent Health Care Providers.

There is a need for culturally competent health care providers (HCPs) to provide care to deaf signers, who are members of a linguistic and cultural minority group. Many deaf signers have lower health literacy levels due to deprivation of incidental learning opportunities and inaccessibility of health-related materials, increasing their risk for poorer health outcomes. Communication barriers arise because HCPs are ill-prepared to serve this population, with deaf signers reporting poor-quality interactions. This has translated to errors in diagnosis, patient nonadherence, and ineffective health

Ramadan and Culturally Competent Care: Strengthening Tuberculosis Protections for Recently Resettled Muslim Refugees.

To improve latent tuberculosis infection treatment completion rates, Tarrant County Public Health began providing after-dusk home delivery of a 12-dose latent tuberculosis infection regimen of weekly rifapentine plus isoniazid administered via directly observed preventive therapy during Ramadan, a month of prayer and daytime fasting observed by Muslims. In unadjusted difference-in-difference logistic regression analyses (n = 148), Muslim patients had lower treatment completion rates than non-Muslim patients during Ramadan prior to program implementation (68.8% vs 95.4%), whereas rates were com

"Being dealt with as a whole person." Care seeking and adherence: the benefits of culturally competent care.

The purpose of this study is to characterize the relationship between identity and health care experiences (including antiretroviral therapy utilization) among HIV-positive sexual minority males. This qualitative study used grounded theory with data collection occurring through focus groups and interviews. A questionnaire was used to complete a demographic profile. The study included 47 HIV positive participants from three minorities: gay men, bisexual men and transgendered persons, gender identifying as female and or living as women. Sessions elicited information on: (1) general experiences w

Effects of in vitro growth culture duration and prematuration culture on maturational and developmental competences of bovine oocytes derived from early antral follicles.

Bovine ovaries offer a large pool of oocytes that could be used for in vitro production of embryos of genetically valuable animals. The effects of in vitro growth (IVG) culture duration (10, 12, and 14 days) on the viability and growth of bovine oocytes derived from early antral follicles (0.5-1 mm diameter) in this study. In addition, the effect of pre-IVM culture with phosphodiesterase inhibitor (3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine) on nuclear maturation of IVG oocytes was also evaluated. In experiment 1, oocyte viability observed after 10 or 12 days of IVG culture was greater (P < 0.05) than that o

Cultural Competence Among Optometry Students at a South African University: Cross-Sectional Survey Study.

BACKGROUND: Cultural competence is an essential dimension of contemporary health care delivery, particularly in diverse, multicultural societies. South Africa, with its rich linguistic and cultural plurality, presents a unique context in which culturally responsive care is critical for equitable health outcomes. Despite growing international attention to cultural competence in health professions education, little research has explored this domain within optometry education in sub-Saharan Africa. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess self-reported levels of cultural competence, specifically pr

Who may compete in the female category in sport? Chromosomes, genes, hormones, and psychosocial/cultural aspects.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Throughout history, competitive sport has been categorized by sex. Since the 1930s, sporting organizations have implemented various methods of confirming sex for competition in the female category. These policies primarily impact individuals with differences of sex development (DSD), whose biology falls outside the binary of male/female, and individuals who identify as transgender, whose identity differs from their sex at birth. This review will cover the dimensions of biologic sex, the history of sex verification in sport, the role of testosterone, and review data for athle

Culturally Competent Interventions for Child Sexual Abuse: A Scoping Review of the Literature and the Implications for American Samoa.

Significant stigma regarding child sexual abuse exists in American Samoa. Although cultural interventions may help prevent child sexual abuse, very little is known about such interventions. Therefore, through a scoping review process, this study aimed to gain a broad understanding of past and current culturally tailored interventions to prevent child sexual abuse. Because no studies examine interventions to prevent child sexual abuse in American Samoa specifically, the reviewed literature investigates interventions in different cultures. The literature search initially identified 180 relevant

Cultural competence: a framework for promoting voluntary medical male circumcision among VaRemba communities in Zimbabwe.

Almost a decade after the formal introduction of voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) as an important technology for HIV prevention, its implementation is still fraught with acceptability challenges. This is especially true among ethnic groups where male circumcision is conducted as a rite of passage into adulthood. In this article we question why VMMC is being met with resistance despite widespread awareness of its promise to reduce HIV incidence in a culturally circumcising community in Zimbabwe. In-depth and key informant interviews were conducted with selected VaRemba initiation grad

Evaluating the phobias, attitudes, and cultural competence of Master of Social Work students toward the LGBT populations.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests there is bias toward lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons by social workers; unfortunately, little research has been conducted to examine Master of Social Work (MSW) students' views toward these populations. The purpose of this study was to develop an assessment scale to evaluate the attitudes, phobias, and cultural competence of MSW students toward the LGBT populations. METHODS: An assessment scale was developed and administered to MSW students (n = 173) at a Midwestern American university. RESULTS: The majority of MSW students reported low ph
