Diversity of ethnomycological knowledge and mushroom foraging culture in a small nation: case of Lithuania.

BACKGROUND: Even in mycophilic nations, mushroom foraging and use traditions may vary from region to region, making it part of cultural diversity and a source of traditional knowledge even in modern and changing societies. The main objective of our study was to investigate mushroom foraging and use traditions in major ethno-regions of Lithuania, to record and analyse whether and how biogeographical and ethno-cultural features influence these traditions, what is their biocultural significance, and whether they persist in the face of societal and environmental change. METHODS: The study conduct…

Culture of Clinical Specimens Reveals Extensive Diversity of Legionella pneumophila Strains in Arizona.

Between 2000 and 2017, a total of 236 Legionella species isolates from Arizona were submitted to the CDC for reference testing. Most of these isolates were recovered from bronchoalveolar lavage specimens. Although the incidence of legionellosis in Arizona is less than the overall U.S. incidence, Arizona submits the largest number of isolates to the CDC for testing compared to those from other states. In addition to a higher proportion of culture confirmation of legionellosis cases in Arizona than in other states, all Legionellapneumophila isolates are forwarded to the CDC for confirmatory test

Testing the Emotional Vulnerability Pathway to Problem Gambling in Culturally Diverse University Students.

Loneliness and adapting to an unfamiliar environment can increase emotional vulnerability in culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) university students. According to Blaszczynski and Nower's pathways model of problem and pathological gambling, this emotional vulnerability could increase the risk of problem gambling. The current study examined whether loneliness was associated with problem gambling risk in CALD students relative to their Australian peers. Additionally, differences in coping strategies were examined to determine their buffering effect on the relationship. A total of 463 fe

[Practicing Cultural Safety: Providing Nursing Care to Taiwan's Increasingly Diverse Population].

With the increasing pace of globalization and transnational migration, healthcare systems are becoming more culturally diverse. In Taiwan, demographic changes have introduced increasing numbers of patients from diverse cultural backgrounds into clinical care environments, presenting new challenges for nursing practice. Cultural safety has emerged as an important framework for promoting equitable healthcare and improving the quality of patient care. Under this concept, patients' lived experiences and perceptions of care are used as central indicators of healthcare quality, and healthcare profes

Cultural Competency in Voice Evaluation: Considerations of Normative Standards for Sociolinguistically Diverse Voices.

AIM: Significant differences exist in anatomical, acoustic, and aerodynamic parameters for nonspeech tasks between culturally and linguistically diverse sample populations. There is a need for expansion of the normative acoustic data to include sociolinguistically diverse groups to ensure that clinical objective measurements are accurately classifying the voice quality of all individuals. This study examined objective measures of voice quality assessment of monolingual speakers of Standard American English (SAE) with sequential bilingual, native (L1) French and Spanish speakers on perturbation

Chemostat culture systems support diverse bacteriophage communities from human feces.

BACKGROUND: Most human microbiota studies focus on bacteria inhabiting body surfaces, but these surfaces also are home to large populations of viruses. Many are bacteriophages, and their role in driving bacterial diversity is difficult to decipher without the use of in vitro ecosystems that can reproduce human microbial communities. RESULTS: We used chemostat culture systems known to harbor diverse fecal bacteria to decipher whether these cultures also are home to phage communities. We found that there are vast viral communities inhabiting these ecosystems, with estimated concentrations simil

Human placental cell surface antigens:expression by cultured cells of diverse phenotypic origin.

The present work examined the expression of cell surface glycoprotein antigens in cultured human cell lines. The set of glycoproteins studied was defined by their immunoreactivity with antiserum developed to Triton-solubilized extracts of placental brush border membranes. Studies were performed using cell lines of trophoblastic (BeWo, JEG-3) and nontrophoblastic (Chang liver cells) origin, as well as diploid fibroblast cell lines (WI-38, GM-38). Antiplacental brush border antiserum reacts with at least 19 distinct antigens present in placental membrane preparations, each of which can be resolv

Bronze Age make-up recipes from Sudanese Lower Nubia point to a greater diversity across cultural borders in ancient Northeast Africa.

Previous scientific explorations of kohl and other make-up substances from ancient Egypt have revealed a considerable diversity of materials and recipes used in different regions and time periods. However, samples from Sudanese Nubia have never been included in scientific investigations of make-up substances used along the Nile valley. For the first time, 24 samples of kohl and other cosmetics from Bronze Age Sudanese Lower Nubia (c. 2055-1070 BCE) were analysed using optical microscopy, GC-MS, SEM-EDS, ATR-FTIR and XRD. Beyond expanding our knowledge of make-up usage in the ancient Nile valle

A discourse analysis of General Medical Council (GMC) guidelines for the inclusion of cultural diversity issues in medical education and practice.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have highlighted the insufficient inclusion of cultural diversity in medical schools' curricula and the extent of health inequalities highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to critically review a range of GMC publications to identify the inclusion of cultural diversity topics in their guidelines, as according to recent studies, doctors are inadequately prepared to serve a diverse population. METHODS: Twenty-four relevant GMC publications were analysed. An inductive thematic analysis was conducted to review the content of the guidelines; and discours…

Prevalence of Enduring Power of Attorney and Advance Health Directive documents among culturally and linguistically diverse patients receiving community palliative care: a study in Queensland's most culturally diverse health service.

This study examined the prevalence of Enduring Power of Attorney (EPOA) and Advance Health Directive (AHD) among culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) and non-CALD patients referred to community palliative care. Of 576 eligible patients, 20% were from CALD backgrounds. No significant difference in EPOA prevalence existed between CALD (12%-19%) and the general population (23%) (P = 0.20). AHD prevalence was significantly lower in CALD (3%-4%) compared to the general population (13%) (P = 0.017). Minimal increases in document completion were observed in both groups over 6 months.

Impact, barriers, and facilitators of blood culture diversion devices to reduce blood culture contamination and improve patient safety: a scoping review.

Blood culture contamination (BCC) is a frequent and costly challenge in clinical diagnostics. BCC leads to extended hospital stays, unnecessary antimicrobial therapy, diagnostic delays, and increased healthcare costs, sometimes exceeding $100,000 per case depending on the scope of analysis. It also contributes to environmental waste and reputational harm. Blood culture diversion (BCD), particularly via blood culture diversion devices (BCDDs), has emerged as a promising strategy to reduce BCC. BCDDs divert initial blood flow, likely contaminated with skin flora, thereby improving diagnostic acc

How is dysphagia conceptualised, assessed, and managed with populations who are culturally diverse: A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Research demonstrates health disparities for culturally diverse populations who are minority groups within dominant cultural populations. Speech-language pathology practices for dysphagia are often derived from evidence drawn from Western contexts, but there is a need for culturally responsive practices to ensure optimal outcomes. In this scoping review we aimed to explore research on swallowing assessment and management for individuals with dysphagia who are culturally diverse, including how this is understood, the nature of practice, and what gaps exist. METHOD: This scoping r

A modular platform for measuring substrate oxidation by CO2 production in diverse cell culture systems.

Metabolism underpins cellular physiology, whereby the preference for specific substrates and catabolic pathways shapes the production of energy, anabolic substrates, and metabolite signals to address bioenergetic demands. Substrate catabolism can be directly examined by measuring metabolic endpoints. For instance, substrate oxidation can be quantified by the incorporation of carbon from labelled glucose or fatty acids into carbon dioxide, providing a sensitive and specific readout of metabolic flux. However, current platforms require relatively large culture volumes, lacking adaptability for s
