Despite increased attention to "culturally competent" practice with diverse populations, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people remain relatively invisible within medicine and other health professions. Health care providers (HCPs) frequently dismiss sexual and gender identity as irrelevant to care. This study uses interviews with 24 physicians and 38 LGBTQ-identified women to explore how routine practices in health care can perpetuate or challenge the marginalization of LGBTQ women. While physicians avoid making assumptions to reduce judgment, a "neutral" stance reinforc

Although most teenagers experience acne, for sexual and gender minority teenagers, acne could be more challenging and require specific psychosocial considerations. Acne may be more strongly associated with mental health issues in sexual and gender minority adolescents. Acne development during puberty may trigger gender dysphoria in transgender patients. Transgender and gender nonbinary patients receiving testosterone therapy may experience new or worsening acne. Comprehensive care for moderate to severe acne in sexual and gender minority adolescents should include culturally competent discussi

Historically, the global mental health system has pathologized transgender and gender diverse (TGD) identities, imposing spurious diagnoses and nocuous "cures." Recently, the World Health Organization declassified "transgender" as a mental health disorder, and psychological organizations have acknowledged the harmful practice of conversion therapy and other culturally inept interventions. Some practitioners have begun to advertise their therapeutic services as "trans-affirming" or "trans-competent," but to date, there are no published studies delineating their efficacy. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Nearly 24 million adults in the United States identify as LGBTQIA+, facing significant health disparities due to discrimination, structural barriers, and lack of culturally competent health care. This study explores health care disparities, barriers, facilitators, and the association of perceived discrimination on LGBTQIA+ health care.
METHODS: Participants were recruited from June 2023 to January 2024 using convenience sampling methods via LGBTQIA+ organizations and social media platforms. A total of 501 participants completed a REDCap survey, with 255 providing co

INTRODUCTION: Research demonstrates health disparities for culturally diverse populations who are minority groups within dominant cultural populations. Speech-language pathology practices for dysphagia are often derived from evidence drawn from Western contexts, but there is a need for culturally responsive practices to ensure optimal outcomes. In this scoping review we aimed to explore research on swallowing assessment and management for individuals with dysphagia who are culturally diverse, including how this is understood, the nature of practice, and what gaps exist.

Gender nonconforming (GN) children and adolescents, collectively referred to as GN youth, may seek care to understand their internal gender identities, socially transition to their affirmed genders, and/or physically transition to their affirmed genders. Because general pediatricians are often the first point of contact with the health care system for GN youth, familiarity with the psychological and medical approaches to providing care for this population is crucial. The objective of this review is to provide an overview of existing clinical practice guidelines for GN youth. Such guidelines em

INTRODUCTION: Black immigrant communities in Canada and Europe have faced disproportionate mental health challenges, further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Structural racism, social isolation, and cultural stigma are among the key factors contributing to mental health distress in these populations. This scoping review aims to explore the mental health outcomes, experiences, and access to care among Black African immigrants in Canada and Europe after the COVID-19 pandemic, using an intersectional lens that considers the combined impact of race, migration, and minority status.

As the health care needs of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) population become increasingly important, health care professionals require appropriate academic and clinical training in preparation for the increased demand for culturally competent care. Nurses are of particular interest, as they are the core direct caregivers in many health care settings. This article explores the national climate around LGBT individuals and their related health needs. Educators and administrators who work with future nurses should strive to ensure they foster the development of knowledgeable pr

Contemporary forms of slavery and associated adverse health effects are a serious, complex and often neglected issue within the New Zealand health sector. Slavery in New Zealand has most recently been associated with the fishing and horticulture industries. However, victims may be found in a number of other industry sectors, including the health and aged-care sectors, or outside of the labour market such as in forced, early (underage) and servile forms of marriage. Victims of slavery are at increased risk of acute and chronic health problems, injuries from dangerous working and living conditio

There is strong evidence indicating that inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is increasing among black and minority ethnic (BME) communities. Despite this rise in prevalence, there is a paucity of research relating to ethnicity and IBD outside the USA. Furthermore, the symptoms of IBD are reported to start during childhood or adolescence in 20-25% of people with the condition. It is therefore important that young people's experiences of diagnosis, treatment and living with IBD are fully understood to ensure effective services and information provision. The study reported on in this paper was comm

People involved in kink (BDSM or fetish) subcultures often encounter stigma and bias in healthcare settings or when seeking psychotherapy. Such individuals typically encounter well-meaning clinicians who are not prepared to provide culturally competent care or who have not recognized their own biases. Over a two-year period, a team of 20 experienced clinicians and researchers created clinical practice guidelines for working with people involved with kink, incorporating an extensive literature review and documentation of clinical expertise. This article summarizes the guidelines and discusses r

Globally there is substantial variation in birth prevalence rates of neural tube defects. In the United States, for instance, the birth prevalence is seven cases per 10,000 live births, whereas in certain regions of Latin America, it has been reported to be as high as 96 cases per 10,000. While immigration from Latin America is often a result of social determinants, immigration itself can be understood as a social determinant of health (SDH). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has stated that when attempting to mitigate racial/ethnic health disparities, it should be remembered that

This article, based on a collaboration between an ethnopsychiatrist, a psychologist and an anthropologist at the Transcultural Psychiatric Operational Unit (TPOU) in Catania, Sicily, examines how a culturally sensitive approach can support migrants suffering from trauma, depression and other psychological or psychiatric disorders in their recovery and adaptation to the host society. First, we analyse the structure of Italy's migrant reception system and the specific characteristics of the public healthcare framework in Sicily. Next, we trace the history of the TPOU, detailing patient profiles

Despite substantial advances in HIV treatment, persistent structural barriers and inequitable policy frameworks continue to disproportionately affect marginalized populations, perpetuating poor health outcomes. This article critically examines how public health policies and institutional practices fail to account for intersecting social identities, exacerbating compounded disadvantage among groups such as men who have sex with men, transgender individuals, sex workers, people who inject drugs, and racialized populations. Using Hankivsky Intersectionality-Based Policy Analysis framework, the an

Women with disabilities make up a diverse population of underserved clients needing skilled, sensitive, and culturally-competent contraceptive care. Barriers to care for these women are structural, attitudinal, and informational, and lack of attention to their needs is also reflected in limited research and clinical guidelines. Special techniques for a modified gynecologic examination can be employed, and disabled women can work in partnership with providers to promote comfort, respect, and safety. There are specific considerations for the use of different contraceptive methods in women with m
