Spine in Athletes.

Spinal lesions in athletes can be classified into overuse and acute injuries. Overuse injuries can be found after repetitive spinal load during sport activity; acute trauma injuries of the spine are common in contact sports. We present an overview of the wide spectrum of spinal injuries related to sport activity and review their imaging findings. Concerning overuse injuries, we focus on degenerative spine disease, spondylolysis, pedicle fractures, apophyseal ring injuries, Schmorl's nodes, and Scheuermann's disease. Acute spinal injuries are relatively frequently reported in athletes and may b

Management of Bone Stress Injuries: A Holistic Approach.

Stress fractures are fatigue fractures of bone that result from an overuse mechanism. These injuries present most commonly in the legs and feet of distance runners and military personnel but can also occur in the upper extremity and the spine depending on the causative activity. Nutritional, hormonal, and biomechanical factors influence the development of bone stress injuries, and no two bone stress injuries behave identically. A thorough history, detailed physical examination, and proper imaging are required to diagnose and classify these injuries. Management of stress injuries requires nutri

Performance Increases in Pair Skating and Ice Dance at International Championships and Olympic Games.

In pair skating and ice dance, performance seems to have increased at international competitions, which is potentially associated with changes in athlete age. We hypothesized increasing age, numbers of total points and more complex jumps of the best elite couples at international championships in recent years. Corresponding data were assessed via the results databases of the European and World Championships, as well as the Winter Olympics since 2005. Linear regression statistics were conducted, and significance was assessed via one-way ANOVAs. There were no significant changes in age. Increase

Kienböck's disease. I. Anatomy and Etiology.

Cumulative trauma disorders (CTD) pose a major industrial problem in terms of increased medical costs, lost productivity and degraded worker health and safety. From an anatomical view, CTD's are classified into three major categories: tendon disorders, neurovascular disorders and nerve disorders. Up until recently these categories seemed to cover CTD of the upper extremity, however, Kienböck's disease, a typically less common disease and one that does not fit into the established CTD categories, has been observed to exhibit CTD characteristics and does appear in the manufacturing environment.

Cycling injuries.

Bicycle-related injuries have increased as cycling has become more popular. Most injuries to recreational riders are associated with overuse or improper fit of the bicycle. Injuries to racers often result from high speeds, which predispose riders to muscle strains, collisions, and falls. Cyclists contact bicycles at the pedals, seat, and handlebars. Each is associated with particular cycling injuries.

Interventional Procedures in Sports.

Image-guided percutaneous procedures are increasingly important in managing sports-related overuse and degenerative injuries. Corticosteroid injections remain widely used to reduce inflammation in conditions such as tendinopathies, cartilage lesions, synovitis, joint impingement, and spinal degeneration. However, treatment is evolving toward regenerative approaches, including dry needling, prolotherapy, platelet-rich plasma, and orthobiologics, which promote tissue healing. Advances in imaging have expanded applications to more complex conditions, such as chronic muscle pain, bone marrow lesio

Surface electromyographic wheel speed skate protocol and its potential in athletes' performance analysis and injury prevention.

BACKGROUND: Speed skating is a discipline that involves cyclical and repetitive movements that make athletes susceptible to injuries, especially in the groin. In professional athletes, during a season, it was found that about 20% had overuse injuries with significant consequences during the competitive season due to long recovery times. Currently, new technological tools allow the measurement of multiple parameters and, through a panel of data deriving from various measurements, provide a valuable aid for training and rehabilitative purposes. This study aimed to probe the potential of the new

Adolescent Wrist Pain.

Adolescence is a difficult time, both physically and emotionally. Rapid growth coupled with physical changes in the background of high levels of activity can be overwhelming. Meanwhile, unfamiliar life stressors coupled with undeveloped compensatory mechanisms can lead to overwhelming anxiety and emotional distress. Emotional factors can make injuries and overuse syndromes feel more catastrophic. Occasionally, an adolescent's emotional distress can manifest physically, without antecedent injury or physiologic cause. Understanding the psychological milieu is as important as understanding the di

Os trigonum syndrome.

Os trigonum syndrome is the result of an overuse injury of the posterior ankle caused by repetitive plantar flexion stress. It is predominantly seen in ballet dancers and soccer players and is primarily a clinical diagnosis of exacerbated posterior ankle pain while dancing on pointe or demi-pointe or while doing push-off maneuvers. Symptoms may improve with rest or activity modification. Imaging studies, including a lateral radiographic view of the ankle in maximal plantar flexion, will typically reveal the os trigonum between the posterior tibial lip and calcaneus. If an os trigonum is absent

The clinicopathologic spectrum of benign mass lesions of the vocal fold due to vocal abuse.

Benign masses of the vocal fold related to phonotrauma are clinically classified into polyps, nodules, Reinke's edema, and cysts. Despite the apparent distinctiveness of the clinical nomenclature, low inter- and intraobserver diagnostic agreement has been reported. Excepting cysts, which are epithelial lined, histologic examination of the remaining lesions has shown a variety of overlapping features insufficiently specific for the clinical diagnoses. This study reviews the clinicopathologic characteristics among these benign lesions of the vocal fold. A total of 78 nonneoplastic lesions of the

[Stress fractures].

Stress fractures are common overuse injuries, ranging between 1.1% and 3.7% of all athletic injuries. Causes are many and usually involve repetitive submaximal stress. There is a wide research evidence showing that training errors cause stress fractures in as many as 22% to 75% of cases. Intrinsic factors such as hormonal imbalance may also contribute to the onset of stress fractures, especially in women. During medical examination, it is essential always to bear in mind the possibility of stress fracture. Clinical diagnosis is therefore the basic procedure, followed by other diagnostic method

Rehabilitation of overuse injuries of the shoulder.

The most common overuse injuries in sports medicine are rotator cuff tendinitis and shoulder impingement. Anatomic and biomechanical analysis of the shoulder complex demonstrates the likelihood of overuse injury to this region. Total rehabilitation includes relief of inflammation, restoration of normal joint arthrokinematics, and rotator cuff strengthening. The reduction of force overload to the shoulder in sport-specific activities and total arm strengthening are also emphasized in a comprehensive rehabilitation program.

Injuries in Breaking: An Overview and Synthesis of Case Reports and Letters to the Editor.

Introduction: Breaking, also known as breakdancing, has evolved from street culture to a structured sport, debuting in the 2024 Olympics. Despite its popularity, limited data exists on injury prevalence, types, and risk factors associated with acute and overuse injuries sustained from breaking. While existing studies offer insights into common injury patterns, they provide limited analysis of the specific mechanisms behind these injuries. This overview aims to classify acute and overuse injuries in breaking, reviewing 50 years of literature to identify risk factors and high-risk movements. Met

Are Current Prophylactic Programs Effective in Preventing Patellar Tendinopathy in Athletes and Recruits? A Meta-Analysis and Trial Sequential Analysis.

CONTEXT: Patellar tendinopathy (PT), or jumper's knee, is a chronic painful overuse patellar tendon injury. For PT, prevention is more important than treatment. However, there is still a lack of strong evidence to confirm the effectiveness of prevention. OBJECTIVE: This study will analyze by meta-analysis the effect of a prophylactic program on high PT risk people (but without PT) in reducing PT occurrence. DATA SOURCES: PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Ebscohost, from inception to January 11, 2022. STUDY SELECTION: A study comparing the effects of prophylactic programs and

An Evidence-Based Review of Overuse Wrist Injuries in Athletes.

Overuse wrist injuries are a common problem in athletes and can be related to tendinopathies or osteoarticular pathology. Fortunately, athletes rarely miss time from their sport due to these conditions because many can be treated nonoperatively. For refractory cases, there often is a curative surgical procedure that can be done during the off-season.

Greater trochanter apophysitis in the adolescent athlete.

Lower limb traction apophysitis is common in young athletes, occurring at sites such as the tibial tubercle (Osgood-Schlatter disease) and distal patella (Sinding-Larsen-Johansson disease). Around the hip, iliac apophysitis is well recognized, but no cases of greater trochanter apophysitis have previously been reported. We describe the case of a 15-year-old male basketball player with a 2-month history of the right hip pain and significant functional limitation. X-rays revealed widening of the greater trochanter apophysis with subchondral sclerosis, consistent with a diagnosis of traction apop
