The Prevalence of Cyclospora cayetanensis and Cryptosporidium spp. in Turkish patients infected with HIV-1.

Opportunistic infections such as cryptosporidiosis and cyclosporiasis are commonly encountered in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). We investigated the existence of opportunistic protozoans that significantly affect the quality of life in HIV-1 infected patients using conventional and molecular methods. The study group comprised 115 HIV-1 positive patients. In the identification of Cyclospora cayetanensis and Cryptosporidium, the formol-ether precipitation method was used and smears were evaluated in optical microscope by staining modified Ziehl-Neelsen (ZN). The primers

Therapy for common parasitic diseases in pregnancy in the United States: a review and a survey of obstetrician/gynecologists' level of knowledge about these diseases.

UNLABELLED: A number of food- and waterborne parasitic diseases that are common in the United States can adversely impact women during pregnancy. Therapeutic considerations during pregnancy for these diseases are reviewed. Also, the level of knowledge of obstetrician-gynecologists about diagnosis and treatment of these diseases (toxoplasmosis, cryptosporidiosis, giardiasis, amebiasis, cyclosporiasis, trichinellosis, ascariasis, and taeniasis) was estimated by means of a questionnaire developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American College of Obstetricians and

Molecular Prevalence of Cyclospora spp. in Tibetan Antelope (Pantholops hodgsonii) in China.

Cyclospora spp. is a globally distributed foodborne intestinal parasite with potential zoonotic risk. The Tibetan antelope (Pantholops hodgsonii), an iconic wildlife species in China, is classified as a national first-class protected animal. However, data on Cyclospora spp. infections in Tibetan antelope remain limited. This study employed polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis targeting the small subunit ribosomal RNA gene of Cyclospora spp. on 503 fecal samples collected from Tibetan antelope in the Tibet Autonomous Region, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Regio

Update on the major imported protozoan infections in travelers and migrants.

Globalization has contributed to the emergence of specific parasitic diseases in novel geographical areas, and in these regions, these infections in travelers and immigrants may cause a considerable burden of disease. Timely diagnosis and treatment of protozoan infections to decrease mortality and prevent associated complications are essential. In this respect, the increased availability of specific DNA-detection procedures has improved the diagnosis of many imported parasitic infections. Travelers and immigrants with associated comorbidities or immunosuppression may pose a special challenge r

Parasitic diseases and immunodeficiencies.

In the last two decades, major immunodeficiency syndromes have strongly influenced medical parasitology. Some animal parasitoses, once unknown in human medicine, have become zoonotic and sometimes anthroponotic. In other cases, the clinical evolution of human parasitoses has been severely aggravated and/or modified in immunodeficient patients especially in toxoplasmosis, cryptosporidiosis, leishmaniasis, strongyloidiasis and scabies. The parasites implicated are varied (protozoa, helminths and even Acaridae) but have in common the capacity to reproduce in or on the human host. These immunodefi

Reported Incidence of Infections Caused by Pathogens Transmitted Commonly Through Food: Impact of Increased Use of Culture-Independent Diagnostic Tests - Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network, 1996-2023.

Reducing foodborne disease incidence is a public health priority. This report summarizes preliminary 2023 Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet) data and highlights efforts to increase the representativeness of FoodNet. During 2023, incidences of domestically acquired campylobacteriosis, Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli infection, yersiniosis, vibriosis, and cyclosporiasis increased, whereas those of listeriosis, salmonellosis, and shigellosis remained stable compared with incidences during 2016-2018, the baseline used for tracking progress towards federal disease reduc

A report case of Cyclospora and Cryptosporidium mixed infection in a HIV-negative child in Thailand.

The first case of cyclosporosis in a non HIV-infected child in Thailand, co-infected with Cryptosporidium, was reported. The patient was a 3 year-old malnourished orphan who presented with fever, abdominal distension and relapsing diarrhea. There was no leukocyte in her stool, however, numerous Cyclospora and Cryptosporidium oocysts were identified by modified acid-fast staining. The illness was cured by co-trimoxazole and fluid therapy. More coccidial infections in Thailand may be detected if modified acid-fast staining is routinely performed.

Cyclospora cayetanensis infection: current insights into foodborne outbreaks, diagnostic challenges, molecular epidemiology, and future directions.

Cyclospora cayetanensis causes prolonged or relapsing watery diarrhea and is an important cause of foodborne outbreaks, most often associated with contaminated fresh produce. Recent multistate outbreaks in the United States have highlighted how short product shelf life, complex supply chains, incomplete ingredient-level exposure data, and limited availability of implicated foods hinder timely source attribution. This review examines foodborne outbreak epidemiology, clinical and diagnostic challenges, molecular epidemiology, treatment, and priorities for surveillance and research. PubMed/MEDLIN

Optimization of the Mit1C real-time PCR assay using Bio-Rad CFX96 for the detection of Cyclospora cayetanensis in agricultural waters.

Increased cases of cyclosporiasis within the United States linked to domestically grown fresh produce highlight the need to identify sources of environmental contamination for Cyclospora cayetanensis. Recently, the Mit1C real-time PCR assay was validated by the U.S. FDA as the US-FDA's BAM 19c for molecular detection of C. cayetanensis Cox3 gene in agricultural water using the now discontinued ABI-7500 platform. This study optimized the Mit1C real-time PCR assay on the Bio-Rad CFX96 platform for molecular detection of C. cayetanensis in environmental water. Using the Mit1AA synthetic fragment

Investigation of Cyclospora spp. in farmed fur animals based on PCR-RFLP.

Cyclospora spp., foodborne intestinal protozoa with potential zoonotic risk, are distributed across the globe. However, their presence in animals bred for fur has not been extensively studied, raising concerns about zoonotic transmission. To assess the prevalence of Cyclospora spp. in fur animals in China, we collected fresh fecal samples from 862 animals, including 352 blue foxes, 275 minks, and 235 raccoon dogs, across multiple provinces. The small subunit (SSU) rRNA gene of Cyclospora spp. was amplified using nested PCR, followed by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis w

Current spectrum of malabsorption syndrome in adults in India.

AIM: Tropical sprue was considered to be the most important cause of malabsorption in adults in India. However, several reports indicate that celiac disease is now recognized more frequently. METHODS: We analyzed the clinical presentation, endoscopic and histological features of 94 consecutive patients (age >12 years) with chronic diarrhea and malabsorption syndrome. The spectrum of disease in these patients and features differentiating celiac disease and tropical sprue are reported here. RESULTS: Celiac disease (n = 61, 65%) was the most common cause of malabsorption followed by tropical sp

Intestinal coccidian parasites as an underestimated cause of travellers' diarrhoea in Polish immunocompetent patients.

Intestinal coccidian parasites are intracellular protozoa most frequently transmitted during food-borne and water-borne infections. This group of parasites is responsible for acute diarrhoeal illnesses especially among immunocompromised patients. However, they are more frequently detected in immunocompetent individuals including travellers, and they should also be considered as important etiologic factors of travellers' diarrhoea. We examined 221 immunocompetent patients hospitalized due to acute or chronic diarrhoea and other gastrointestinal symptoms after returning from international journe

Cyclospora infection in a young woman with human immunodeficiency virus in Hong Kong: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Cyclospora is an uncommon pathogen. The diagnosis of Cyclospora infection can be difficult because of its scarcity in developed countries, intracellular mode of life, small size of the parasite and its inability to take up routine microscopic stains. However, it is endemic in many countries in Asia, Africa, Central and South America. With the increase in travels to these areas, the number of cases is expected to increase. Moreover, it is found to be associated with numerous food-borne outbreaks. CASE PRESENTATION: We encountered a patient with human immunodeficiency virus presente
