Cutaneous larva migrans induced by swallowing live pond loaches.

Freshwater fish, specifically loaches, are potential hosts of Gnathostoma species. Consumption of uncooked freshwater loaches may result in cutaneous larva migrans. We report the case of a 70-year-old Taiwanese man who presented with a serpiginous skin rash on his abdomen. He had eaten live loaches intermittently (sometimes daily) for 5 months before his presentation. On histopathological examination, a transected parasite body and a headbulb were found in the mid-dermis. The parasite was confirmed as belonging to the genus Gnathostoma, most likely Gnathostoma doloresi. The patient recovered u

Muscarinic cholinoceptors that mediate pigment aggregation are present in the melanophores of cyprinids (Zacco spp.).

Like melanophores of many teleosts, those of the dark chub, Zacco temmincki, and the common minnow, Z. platypus (Cyprinidae, Cypriniformes) responded to norepinephrine (NE) by the aggregation of pigment. It was further found that some melanophores were responsive to acetylcholine (ACh) in the same way. The response to NE was blocked by an alpha-adrenergic blocker, phentolamine, whereas the response to ACh was not. By contrast, two muscarinic cholinoceptor antagonists, namely, atropine and scopolamine, effectively blocked the action of ACh. The pigment aggregation due to the liberated sympathet

The Influence of Genome Composition and Temperature on the Hatching Success and Development of the Offspring of Allotriploid Cobitis (Pisces: Cobitidae) Females.

Hybridization and polyploidization are key evolutionary forces shaping fish biodiversity. But their interaction with environmental factors, such as temperature, remains poorly understood. This study examined how maternal genome composition and incubation water temperature influence the hatching success, ploidy structure, morphology and early growth of polyploid Cobitis larvae. Crosses were performed using triploid Cobitis females with three genomic compositions (EEN, EET and ETN), representing combinations of genomes from C. elongatoides (E), C. taenia (T) and C. tanaitica (N), and diploid C.

Rh proteins and H+ transporters involved in ammonia excretion in Amur Ide (Leuciscus waleckii) under high alkali exposure.

High alkaline environment can lead to respiratory alkalosis and ammonia toxification to freshwater fish. However, the Amur ide (Leuciscus waleckii), which inhabits an extremely alkaline lake in China with titratable alkalinity up to 53.57 mM (pH 9.6) has developed special physiological and molecular mechanisms to adapt to such an environment. Nevertheless, how the Amur ide can maintain acid-base balance and perform ammonia detoxification effectively remains unclear. Therefore, this study was designed to study the ammonia excretion rate (Tamm), total nitrogen accumulation in blood and tissues,

DNA methylation mediates gonadal development via regulating the expression levels of cyp19a1a in loach Misgurnus anguillicaudatus.

DNA methylation-mediated transcriptional regulation has been considered to significantly impact some steroidogenic enzyme genes expression. To uncover the roles of DNA methylation on the regulation of aromatase gene expression during gametogenesis in Misgurnus anguillicaudatus, the expression profiles and cellular localization of cyp19a1a and cyp19a1b were analyzed, and the landscape of DNA methylation dynamics was investigated. We found that cyp19a1a was predominantly expressed in granulosa cells of oocytes, while cyp19a1b expression was enriched in radial glial cells of the forebrain. In ova

Histopathology and external examination of heavily parasitized Lost River Sucker Deltistes luxatus (Cope 1879) and Shortnose Sucker Chasmistes brevirostris (Cope 1879) from Upper Klamath Lake, Oregon.

Shortnose Sucker (Chasimistes brevirostris) and Lost River Sucker (Deltistes luxatus) are endemic to the Upper Klamath Basin of Southern Oregon and Northern California, and their populations are in decline. We used histopathology and external examination of 140 and external examination only of 310 underyearling suckers collected in 2013, 2015 and 2016 to document pathological changes, particularly those relating to parasites. The most severe infection was caused by a Contracaecum sp., infecting the atrium of 8%-33% of Shortnose Suckers. The most prevalent infections were caused by Bolbophorus

Investigating the toxicity of polylactic acid microplastics on the health and physiology of freshwater fish, Cirrhinus mrigala.

The widespread presence of microplastics (MPs) in aquatic ecosystems has raised growing concerns among ecotoxicologists regarding their potential toxicity. This study explored the impacts of polylactic acid (PLA) MPs on the physiology and health of freshwater fish, Cirrhinus mrigala, by dietary exposure for 90 days. The experiment consisted of six groups: five treatment groups (0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, 2%, and 2.5% PLA-MP) and a control group (0% PLA-MP). Each group was comprised of fifteen fish, and the experiment was replicated three times. The exposure severity of PLA-MPs varied from low to high, wi

Dactylogyrus pisolabrae n. sp. (Monogenoidea: Dactylogyridae) Parasitizing the Pealip Redhorse, Moxostoma pisolabrum (Teleostei: Catostomidae), from Oklahoma, U.S.A.

A new species of monogenean, Dactylogyrus pisolabrae n. sp., was found parasitizing the gills of the Pealip Redhorse, Moxostoma pisolabrum, from Oklahoma. Dactylogyrus pisolabrae is morphologically similar to Dactylogyrus apos, Dactylogyrus atripinnei, Dactylogyrus duquesnei, and Dactylogyrus niger, all parasitizing other species of suckers, by possessing a robust, sickle-shaped male copulatory organ, but differs from these and all other species of North American Dactylogyrus by possessing 2 unique wing-like projections opposite each other on the proximal portion of the accessory piece. Lethal effect of ammonia on metacercariae of Clonorchis sinensis.

The effect of endogenous ammonia produced in dead fish or ammonia in ammonium bicarbonate solutions was evaluated on the viability of Clonorchis sinensis metacercariae. Viability was determined by worm recovery in rats infected with metacercariae exposed to ammonia in decaying fish or in vitro solutions. The recovery rates were 58%, 48%, 44% and 2% in fish that had been allowed to decay for 5, 10, 20 and 30 days at 4 degrees C, respectively, and this rate ( Y) was inversely correlated with the ammonia concentration ( X) in fish muscle extract ( Y=80.62-0.0667 X, r(2)=0.905, P=0.049). C. sinens

Complete mitochondrial genome of the speckled dace Rhinichthys osculus, a widely distributed cyprinid minnow of western North America.

The speckled dace Rhinichthys osculus (order Cypriniformes), also known as the carpita pinta, is a small cyprinid minnow native to western North America. Here, we report the sequencing of the full mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of R. osculus from a male fish collected from the Amargosa River Canyon in eastern California, USA. The assembled mitogenome is 16 658 base pair (bp) nucleotides, and encodes 13 protein-coding genes, and includes both a 12S and a 16S rRNA, 22 tRNAs, and a 985 bp D-loop control region. Mitogenome synteny reflects that of other Ostariophysian fishes with the majority o

Comparative Transcriptome and Gene-Editing Analyses Reveal the Molecular Mechanism of Albinism in the Taiwanese Loach.

The Taiwanese loach (Paramisgurnus dabryanus ssp. Taiwanese), known for its nutritional and ornamental qualities, exhibits a rare form of albinism. Specifically, certain individuals display golden-pink eyes and a golden-red body color devoid of blotches, thereby attracting consumers. However, the principal genes regulating this phenotype remain unidentified. Consequently, this study conducted a transcriptome comparative analysis of the skin between wild-type (M) and mutant (N) Taiwanese loaches. A total of 6,152 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified, comprising 2,467 down-regul

Generation of donor-derived spermatozoa by cross-subfamily transplantation of purple loach (Leptobotia taeniops) spermatogonia into triploid loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus).

Germ cell transplantation plays an important role in the conservation of endangered fish species. As one of the most promising and valuable techniques, there are only few successful cases of cross-subfamily germ cell transplantation in fish. The purple loach Leptobotia taeniops, belonging to the subfamily Botiinae, genus Leptobotia, has been classified as "vulnerable" on the "China Biodiversity Red List." Due to the difficulty of artificial breeding of Botiinae fish, we chose hybrid triploid loach belonging to the subfamily Cobitinae as recipient fish for spermatogonia transplantation to obtai

Revision of Isoglaridacris (Cestoda: Caryophyllidea), parasites of suckers (Catostomidae) in North America: molecular phylogeny and description of four new species.

The caryophyllidean tapeworms (Cestoda) of the genus Isoglaridacris Mackiewicz, 1965 are revised on the basis of the study of type specimens and newly collected material from suckers (Cypriniformes: Catostomidae) in North America. Molecular data reveal the presence of 14 lineages, each representing a separate species. An overview of all nominal species is provided, with updated information on their hosts, distribution and phylogenetic relationships. Isoglaridacris multivitellaria Amin, 1976 is excluded from Isoglaridacris, but its generic affiliation remains unclear, and it is considered incer

REVISION OF SANGUINICOLA PLEHN, 1905 WITH REDESCRIPTION OF SANGUINICOLA VOLGENSIS (RAŠÍN, 1929) MCINTOSH, 1934, DESCRIPTION OF A NEW SPECIES, PROPOSAL OF A NEW GENUS, AND PHYLOGENETIC ANALYSIS.

Sanguinicola Plehn, 1905 comprises 26 species that collectively infect fishes from 8 orders (Cypriniformes, Characiformes, Siluriformes, Esociformes, Salmoniformes, Labriformes, Centrarchiformes, and Perciformes). Its revision is warranted because several species assigned to the genus could represent new genera, nucleotide sequences are wanting, many species have incomplete descriptions, and types for most species are missing or of poor quality. Herein, we emend Sanguinicola based on morphology and the first nucleotide-based phylogenetic analysis that includes multiple sequences from morpholog

Contracaecum nematode parasites in hillstream loaches of the Western Ghats, India.

Nematode parasites of the family Anisakidae infect definitive hosts, such as fish-eating birds and mammals, through primary intermediate hosts like copepods and secondary intermediate hosts like fishes. However, consumption of raw or undercooked fish can lead to nematode infection called anisakidosis in humans. We observed the presence of nematode infection in hillstream loaches of families Cobitidae and Nemacheilidae available for human consumption in the local markets in the northern parts of Western Ghats, India. Comparative transcriptome profiles of large and small bodied large-scale loaches cultivated in paddy fields.

Fish culture in paddy fields is a traditional aquaculture mode, which has a long history in East Asia. Large-scale loach (Paramisgurnus dabryanus) fast growth is suitable for paddy fields aquaculture in China. The objective of this study was to identify differential expression genes (DEGs) in the brain, liver and muscle tissues between large (LG, top 5% of maximum total length) and small (SG, top 5% of minimum total length) groups using RNA-seq. In total, 150 fish were collected each week and 450 fish were collected at twelfth week from three paddy fields for all the experimental. Histological

The effects of the heavy metals cadmium and lead on six metabolic and immune-related enzymes in the loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus).

BACKGROUND: Cadmium (Cd2+) and lead (Pb2+) are two common heavy metal pollutants in rivers and lakes that have multiple toxic effects on organisms. However, their toxic mechanisms are not fully understood. The loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus), belonging to the genus Misgurnus (Cypriniformes, Cobitidae), is an important benthic fish species whose physiological activities are highly susceptible to heavy metal pollutants. Such exposure can adversely affect its growth, development, and reproduction, leading to disease occurrence and significant economic losses in the M. anguillicaudatus farming
