OBJECTIVE: We investigated the possible mechanisms underlying transient cranial diabetes insipidus during pregnancy.

Sixty-seven human tumor cell lines and 15 lines derived from normal tissue were examined for the production of the oncodevelopmental markers carcinoembryonic antigen, alpha and beta subunits of chorionic gonadotropin, placental and nonplacental forms of alkaline phosphatase, gamma-glutamyltransferase, cystyl aminopeptidase, and calcitonin. Both intracellular and extracellular levels of these markers were determined at three phases during the growth of each culture. Transient diabetes insipidus (DI) is a disease of late pregnancy, that has been reported with increasing frequency. Although initially thought to be nephrogenic, the etiology of this syndrome is most likely excess vasopressinase activity. The disease is associated with preeclampsia with liver involvement. Infants of mothers with the syndrome are predominantly male. Senescent cell accumulation and fibrosis play a fundamental role in kidney ageing. Our aim was to determine whether the angiotensin IV/insulin-regulated aminopeptidase (IRAP) axis of the renin-angiotensin system contributes to renal function decline, fibrosis, and senescent cell accumulation in aged mice. We studied the role of IRAP in kidney ageing using IRAP knockout (KO) mice, as well as in wild-type (WT) mice treated with an IRAP inhibitor. Complementary proximal tubule and collecting duct cell models were used to determine the mechanisms by which IRAP inhibition exerts protective effects.

The fetoplacental system of 132 women with diabetes mellitus and 85 healthy women was studied during the third pregnancy trimester. Blood estradiol and urinary estriol levels were found-reduced in the diabetics, particularly in those with insulin-dependent diabetes. Blood progesterone and oxytocinase levels were found unchanged. These parameters lowered in diabetic glomerulosclerosis. If pregnant diabetics develop hydramnion, their blood estradiol, progesterone, prolactin, and oxytocinase levels increased.

OBJECTIVE: To study the role of vasopressin in osmoregulation in two successive pregnancies in a woman with Sheehan's syndrome.
STUDY DESIGN: Diabetes insipidus (DI) became manifest during two pregnancies in a woman with postpartum hypopituitarism.
RESULTS: Water deprivation-vasopressin administration tests demonstrated partial central DI, corrected with vasopressin in week 12, but only with desmopressin in the third trimester, when placental cystylamino peptidase (vasopressinase) contributes to the severity of the DI.
CONCLUSION: If DI occurs during pregnancy it may be the first manifestat
