Since 1983 the Netherlands Centre for Monitoring of Adverse Reactions to Drugs received 6 reports of anaphylaxis due to a chlorhexidine-containing lubricant used during cystoscopy or urinary catheterization. One case was described earlier. An accidental rechallenge in two patients was positive. In 5 cases, the causal relationship with chlorhexidine was confirmed by a positive reaction to intracutaneous testing. Although this adverse reaction is probably rare, medical practitioners should be aware of the possibility that a severe anaphylactic reaction may occur during use of these products.

Cystoscopy is an important procedure in the diagnostic evaluation of the lower urinary tract. Standard cystoscopy (white light) undergoes permanent improvement. High-end instruments and video systems are available, supported by PDD (photodynamic diagnostic), NBI (narrow band imaging) and digital contrast enhancement to improve the detection rate of bladder cancer. A correct indication, careful patient education and high expertise are core competencies of our daily business needed to minimise discomfort, keep the complication rate as low as possible and find the correct diagnosis. A severe mism

OBJECTIVE: Our institutional protocol for the treatment of exstrophy-epispadias complex includes routine endoscopic and cystographic evaluation of the bladder with the child under general anesthesia. The protocols briefly described in the literature include a cystographic evaluation and the measurement of bladder capacity, but there are no reports on concurrent endoscopic findings and the value of examinations in this setting. Our objective is to evaluate the role and necessity of our management protocol by reviewing the findings in our patients' medical charts.
STUDY DESIGN: Cystoscopies are

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to prospectively compare single-dose intravenous antibiotic prophylaxis vs. no prophylaxis before minor cystoscopic procedures, including punch biopsy and transurethral resection (TUR) of small bladder tumors.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 200 patients with a mean age of 47.3 years old (range: 19-84 years old) with initial negative urine cultures were recruited. All patients underwent a diagnostic cystoscopy. Patients were then randomized into 2 groups: One group that did not receive antibiotics (100 patients) and the other group that received antibio

Periodically, a look at the past helps health care professionals see how much practice has changed as well as how some concepts and practices remain similar to the original rationales and techniques. Two chapters from a 1911 textbook on cystoscopy have been reprinted that describe catheter and instrument care and preprocedure requirements for cystoscopy performed in the hospital, office, or home. Sterilization methods and instruments for cystoscopy have improved in the century since this book was written but the rationale for the procedure and concepts guiding the instrumentation have some sim

A 15F flexible fiberoptic choledochonephroscope was used to perform bedside flexible cystoscopy in 5 critically ill patients. All 5 patients were receiving pressor agents, and 4 were intubated and dependent on a respirator. A ureteral stent was placed in the renal pelvis in 3 patients. The flexible endoscope enables the urologist to bring diagnostic and therapeutic cystoscopy directly to the bedside.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Bladder cancer remains one of the most frequently diagnosed malignancies worldwide and is characterized by high recurrence rates requiring long-term surveillance. Conventional white-light cystoscopy (WLC) remains the standard diagnostic method; however, it may fail to detect flat lesions such as carcinoma in situ or small papillary tumors. In recent years, enhanced imaging techniques, including fluorescence cystoscopy and autofluorescence-based systems, have been introduced to improve diagnostic accuracy. The aim of this study is to evaluate the usefulness of fluorescenc

Isolated neurofibromas of the urinary bladder are rare benign tumors typically associated with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1). Herein highlights a bladder neurofibroma incidentally discovered during cystoscopy following midurethral sling removal in a 61-year-old woman without NF-1 sequela. Despite malignancy concerns due to smoking history, histology confirmed a benign neurofibroma. These tumors differ from NF-1-associated neurofibromas in origin and presentation; they are rare, often asymptomatic, and likely stem from somatic mutations. Conservative management is preferred, with surgical int

Objective.Accurate tumor detection is critical in cystoscopy to improve bladder cancer resection and decrease recurrence. Advanced deep learning algorithms hold the potential to improve the performance of standard white-light cystoscopy (WLC) in a noninvasive and cost-effective fashion. The purpose of this work is to develop a cost-effective, transformer-augmented deep learning algorithm for accurate detection of bladder tumors in WLC and to assess its performance on archived patient data.Approach.'CystoNet-T', a deep learning-based bladder tumor detector, was developed with a transformer-augm

INTRODUCTION: Ureteral stenting is a common procedure in urology. The cystoscopic removal of Double-J stents (DJ) causes unpleasant side effects with a negative impact on patient's quality of life. The aim of our study was to evaluate this newly developed magnetic DJ and compare it with a standard DJ regarding quality of life with indwelling DJs as well as discomfort during the removal.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The magnetic DJ (Blackstar, Urotech [Achenmühle, Germany]) is a standard 7F ureteral stent with a small magnetic cube fixed through a string on the loop of the distal part of the stent. F

This study was undertaken to determine the usefulness of routine intra-operative cystoscopy in documenting ureteral patency after laparoscopy-assisted vaginal hysterectomy (LAVH). There were eighty patients who underwent LAVH for benign tumors of the uterus (adenomyosis and myoma), uterine prolapse, persistent intraepithelial neoplasm of the cervix (CIN3) and cervical carcinoma in situ (CIS). Intra-operative cystoscopy with ureteral stenting was performed at the time of LAVH to evaluate the urinary tract. From among the 80 patients who underwent LAVH, 52 had myoma, 19 had adenomyosis, six pati

Inflammatory polyps in the urinary bladder of two dogs were removed via laparoscopic-assisted cystoscopy. In addition, one dog had a calculus removed and liver biopsies taken using the same two trocar sites. The laparoscopic-assisted cystoscopic technique provided clear surgical margins and permitted a thorough examination of the inside of the bladder and urethra. The technique was minimally invasive, produced little abdominal injury, and limited urine contamination of the abdomen.

Eighty-one consecutive flexible cystoscopic examinations were performed on 69 patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) at the time of their urodynamic study. The indications for cystoscopy included hematuria, recurrent urinary tract infections, symptoms of bladder outlet obstruction, the presence of an intraurethral sphincter stent requiring evaluation, neurogenic vesical dysfunction requiring endourodynamic study (cystometrogram through the working port of the flexible cystoscope), or bladder calculi. Flexible cystoscopy was accomplished in all patients, whether lying supine or seated in a whee

BACKGROUND: Antibiotic prophylaxis is commonly administered before outpatient cystoscopic procedures (CPE). This study compared the efficacy and safety of parenteral amikacin and oral fosfomycin used as prophylactic agents before outpatient cystoscopy.
METHODS: This retrospective comparative observational study included adult patients undergoing outpatient CPE at a tertiary care center between October 2024 and November 2025. Patients received either a single intravenous dose of amikacin (15 mg/kg) or a single oral dose of fosfomycin trometamol (3 g) before the procedure, according to institut

INTRODUCTION: Cystoscopy is one of the most commonly performed invasive urological procedures, serving as a critical diagnostic and surveillance tool in urology, particularly for patients with bladder cancer and hematuria. Despite its routine use in outpatient settings, the procedure is frequently associated with significant patient-reported discomfort, which may adversely affect compliance with surveillance protocols and overall quality of care.
AREAS COVERED: This review synthesizes evidence from 53 randomized controlled trials assessing interventions aimed at reducing discomfort during fle

Pelvic lipomatosis is a rare, proliferative disease with unknown etiology involving an overgrowth of normal fat in the pelvic retroperitoneal space. 1-5 Cystitis glandularis or cystitis cystica can be observed in 75% of patients with pelvic lipomatosis. 5 We describe a 44-yr-old chronic smoker with suspicion of bladder mass who was referred to us following an inconclusive cystoscopy due to an "elongated" urethra and was later diagnosed to be a case of pelvic lipomatosis with cystitis cystica. Because the association of this condition with bladder adenocarcinoma and the possibility of obstructi

BACKGROUND: Posterior urethral valve (PUV) is life-threatening congenital anomaly of the urinary tract that results in vesicoureteric reflux, recurrent UTI, voiding dysfunction and renal insufficiency if not treat timely. Endoscopic ablation of posterior urethral valves using cold knife or laser is the current gold standard therapy. Many urologists go for repeat cystoscopy to see residual valve or stricture while others repeat VCUG to measure the posterior to anterior urethral ratio for residual obstruction. In this study, we have standardized by regularly doing re-look cystoscopy at 3 months
