Vesicoureteral reflux and lower urinary tract injury: the possible role of suprapubic cystostomy.

Incidental vesicoureteral reflux was noted frequently during routine cystographic evaluation of patients who suffered vesicourethral trauma and who were managed by suprapubic cystostomy. Based on this observation we designed a retrospective study to document the prevalence of vesicoureteral reflux among 30 consecutive patients following vesicourethral trauma. In 9 patients drainage was instituted by urethral catheter and in 21 by suprapubic cystostomy. Of the latter 21 patients 10 (47.6%) had evidence of vesicoureteral reflux on cystography, which was associated with complete rupture of the ur

[Neurogenic bladder and continent cystostomy: Results of a monocentric cohort in a French university hospital].

OBJECTIVE: The main objective was to evaluate the complications of continuous urinary shunts in a French university hospital according to surgical technique and functional results especially on continence. The secondary objective was to evaluate the management of complications. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted between January 2008 and August 2017. Patients who had a continent cystostomy with or without bladder augmentation were included. Diversions for non-neurological causes were excluded. Cystostomy was performed using the appendix or a Monti's artifice. Data collected included

Suprapubic cystostomy catheter knotting. Presentation of the first national case and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: This study presents the first Spanish case of a spontaneous knot in the catheter of a suprapubic cystostomy and review the national and international literature. METHODS: The case of an 87-year-old patient who was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma of the prostate is presented. A suprapubic vesical puncture for urinary retention was urgently performed in this patient because of the impossibility of urethral catheterisation. A spontaneous knot in the catheter was detected upon removal; the tightened knot could be removed by gentle and sustained traction without surgery. RESULTS: Knottin

Marjolin's ulcer of the suprapubic cystostomy site infiltrating the urinary bladder: a rare occurrence.

We report a case of a 40-year-old man who had presented with a spontaneous suprapubic urinary leak from a well-healed suprapubic cystostomy tract scar, 20 years following a successful scrotal tube substitution urethroplasty done for a post-traumatic urethral stricture. Preoperative contrast studies suggested a recurrent bulbomembranous urethral stricture. Excision biopsy of the suprapubic fistulous tract revealed scar cancer infiltrating the bladder wall. Of 3 similar cases reported in the past, only 1 had bladder involvement. Ours is the second such case with bladder involvement.

[Enlargement colocystoplasty with temporary skin opening. Modification of the trans-appendicular continent cystostomy technic].

The results of trans-appendix continent vesicostomy, described in 1980 by P. Mitrofanoff, depends on the capacity of the neurogenic bladder. A cystoplasty using the sigmoïd colon is able to resolve the problem of small and hypertonic bladders. The colon conduit is placed between the bladder and the antero-lateral wall of the abdomen, where a temporary urinary stoma is performed. Results of this technic are reported in 3 cases: no specific complication related to the colocystoplasty has been observed. In all cases, the colon conduit permits a large capacity. It reduces the intravesical pressure

Hair as the nidus for bladder calculi formation complicating suprapubic cystostomy catheterization: a case report.

Neurogenic bladder is a familiar sequel to spinal cord injury, and bladder calculi is a common complication of neurogenic bladder. We report a case of a 25-year-old man with spinal cord injury resulting in neurogenic bladder. Permanent cystostomy was performed, and, for 4 years, the patient received periodic replacement of a cystostomy catheter. Bladder calculi were found on follow-up radiography. Cystoscopic lithotripsy was done, and it was noted that a hair was the nidus of a calculus. The hair could have been introduced into the bladder accidentally during the cystostomy catheter replacemen

Temporary tube cystostomy as a treatment for urinary obstruction secondary to adrenal disease in four ferrets.

Adrenal neoplasia is a common problem in middle-aged to older ferrets. Male ferrets may present for stranguria and dysuria due to prostatic/paraurethral tissue enlargement secondary to elevation in androgens produced by the neoplastic tissue. Progressive urethral compression followed by complete urinary obstruction can result. Urinary obstruction can persist for days following surgery requiring urinary diversion. Four ferrets presenting with signs consistent with urinary obstruction secondary to adrenal disease were immediately treated with urethral catheterization or cystocentesis followed by

Squamous cell carcinoma of suprapubic cystostomy tract in a male with locally advanced primary urethral malignancy.

A 65-year-old man with stricture urethra underwent drainage of periurethral abscess and suprapubic cystostomy (SPC) placement. He presented to us 3 months later with a fungating ulcer at the site of perineal incision, the biopsy of which revealed squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). He underwent a total penile amputation, wide local excision scrotum, radical urethrocystoprostatectomy, ileal conduit with the en-bloc excision of the SPC tract. Histopathological examination of the suprapubic tract also revealed SCC. This is the first documented case of SCC of a suprapubic tract in the presence of prima

[Hepaticocholangiochole cystostomy plus construction of subcutaneous tunnel of the gallbladder in the treatment of hepatolithiasis with bile duct stricture].

A novel operation was designed by using Hartmann's pouch of the gallbladder to anastomose stone-strictured intrahepatic bile duct while leaving the common bile duct and Oddis sphincter intact and fixing the fundus of the bladder subcutaneously. 28 patients with intrahepatic bile duct stones and strictures underwent the operation successfully, and recovered well. There were no postoperative complications such as reflux cholangitis or disturbances of GI tract.

Placement of a permanent cystostomy catheter to relieve urine outflow obstruction in dogs with transitional cell carcinoma.

Permanent cystostomy catheters were placed in 7 dogs to relieve urine outflow obstruction from presumed transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder trigone and urethra. The catheters were easily managed at home by the owners. Complications were minimal. The most frequent complication was urinary tract infection. Two owners complained of difficulty in draining the bladder 1 week before euthanasia of their dogs. The primary reason for euthanasia of all dogs was progression of the tumor. Survival times of these dogs were similar to those previously reported for dogs with transitional cell carcinom

Total replacement of the ureter by a segment of the sigmoid colon in the treatment of giant hydronephrosis: calyco-sigmoido-cystostomy.

Two cases of giant hydronephrosis of a solitary kidney are reported. In both of them correctly performed pyelo-ureteroplasties had not assured satisfactory emptying of the pyelocalyceal system. Its dilatation and infection had not disappeared. In order to liquidate the nephrostomy, the ureters were replaced by a sigmoidal loop (calyco-sigmoido-cystostomy) with favorable results assessed 24 and 19 months after operation. The use of an isolated sigmoid segment for replacement of the ureter is discussed.

Iatrogenic direct rectal injury: an unusual complication during suprapubic cystostomy (SPC) insertion and its laparoscopic management.

Suprapubic cystostomy (SPC) is commonly used, instead of indwelling urethral catheter- ization, as indicated in many pathological conditions. Although considered to be a safe procedure that can be easily performed in an outpatient basis several complications have been reported in international literature. Bowel injury can be a serious complication with the small intestine affected in the majority of cases. We present a case of an acci- dental rectal injury by a suprapubic catheter misplacement, in a 76 year old demented patient with prostatic hyperplasia and chronic urinary retention. The inju

Contemporary role of suprapubic cystostomy in treatment of neuropathic bladder dysfunction in spinal cord injured patients.

BACKGROUND: The management of neuropathic bladder dysfunction secondary to spinal cord injury is controversial. With the introduction of clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) and anti-cholinergic medication, urinary tract deterioration in this population has declined. Nevertheless, this strategy is problematic for patients who are unable to perform CIC. Suprapubic cystostomy (SPC) is widely viewed as a secondary option, which has a high satisfaction rating among patients, with acceptable clinical efficacy. Despite early reports of long-term renal and bladder complications, recent evidence h
