Validation of an internationally derived patient severity phenotype to support COVID-19 analytics from electronic health record data.

OBJECTIVE: The Consortium for Clinical Characterization of COVID-19 by EHR (4CE) is an international collaboration addressing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) with federated analyses of electronic health record (EHR) data. We sought to develop and validate a computable phenotype for COVID-19 severity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve 4CE sites participated. First, we developed an EHR-based severity phenotype consisting of 6 code classes, and we validated it on patient hospitalization data from the 12 4CE clinical sites against the outcomes of intensive care unit (ICU) admission and/or death.

An informatics framework to harmonize electronic health record medication data for managed care analytics and artificial intelligence applications.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) applications in managed care pharmacy depend on semantically consistent medication data, yet heterogeneous medication identifiers across real-world electronic health records (EHRs) could undermine analytic fidelity and risk propagating classification errors. To enable transportable, reproducible AI tools, methods for harmonizing disparate medication identifiers (eg, National Drug Code [NDC] and Multum drug synonym ID) to standardized vocabularies are required. OBJECTIVE: To develop and evaluate an informatics framework that harmonizes heterogeneous med

Primary Hyperparathyroidism and Cardiovascular Disease: An Association Study Using Clinical Natural Language Processing Systems and Big Data Analytics.

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) seems to be associated with different cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). We evaluated the association of PHPT with major CV risk factors (CVRFs) and CVDs by using artificial intelligence (AI) tools. An observational and retrospective study was conducted using data from the electronic health records (EHRs) of the Hospital Universitario Puerta de Hierro Majadahonda (Spain). Of a total of 699,157 patients over 18 years of age studied (54.7% females), 6515 patients (0.9%; 65.4% women; mean age 67.6 ± 15.9 years) had a diagnosis of PHPT. The overall frequencies of hy

Federated analytics for non-communicable disease surveillance in the European health data space: a scoping review and conceptual framework.

BACKGROUND: The growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Europe has intensified the need for timely, comparable, and policy-relevant health indicators derived from increasingly heterogeneous health data ecosystems. The European Health Data Space (EHDS) represents a major policy initiative to facilitate the secondary use of health data while preserving privacy, security, and national data sovereignty. In this context, federated analytics can foster international comparisons without requiring the transfer of person-level data. OBJECTIVES: This scoping review aimed to map federated

A novel approach in diagnosing knee osteoarthritis for content based image retrieval in big data analytics and medical images.

The rapid growth in database size due to technological advances has led to difficulties in locating and accessing specific data components. While deep learning and other machine learning architectures are promising in retrieving data components, their effectiveness is more pronounced when addressing groups of diseases. On the contrary, this effectiveness decreases when large data sets are accessed. Content-based Image retrieval (CBIR) methods are used in large data sets. In this study, knee osteoarthritis detection was performed using a developed hybrid CBIR-based system. Knee Osteoarthritis i

Direct Prediction of VLCADD Severity Using Newborn Screening Analyte Data.

A critical concern of newborn screening (NBS) for very-long chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (VLCADD) is the difficulty of predicting clinical outcomes. To address this, we investigated neonatal C18:2-carnitine concentrations as a possible predictor of VLCADD phenotype. To investigate the impact of sex, gestational age (GA) at birth, sampling day and birth weight on C18:2-carnitine, we analyzed NBS-dried blood spots (DBS) from Dutch newborns born between 2018 and 2020 (n = 209.785). After normalization for resulting confounders, C18:2-carnitine concentrations were investigated in NBS-DB

Over and under-regulation in the Colorado Cannabis industry - A data-analytic perspective.

With the State of California legalizing recreational cannabis sales on January 1, 2018, the regulatory process is once more in the forefront of cannabis research. Colorado, often held up as a model of legalization policy, was the first state to implement retail sale of recreational cannabis on January 1st, 2014. However, a combination of subsequent under-regulation and over-regulation, inconsistently applied across issues such as retail licencing, chemical testing, cannabis derivatives, municipality approval for growers, and financing, have not only held back the industry in Colorado but also

Mathematical processing of RGB data in microfluidic paper-based analytical devices.

Microfluidic paper-based analytical devices often are combined with scanners as detectors. In this work, different scanning options offered by scanners: resolution, scanning mode, exposure to radiation, colour restoration, and saving format were tested. Moreover, different attempts to mathematical data treatment based on intensities of three channels-Red, Green and Blue, were studied. All measurements presented in this article were conducted for a model dye-bromothymol blue and a model analyte-zinc(II) ion (complexed with xylenol orange in a paper matrix). The article summarizes the scanning o

Early Detection of Cryogenic Dewar Degradation Using LevelSense™: Longitudinal Temperature Analytics and Data-Driven Risk Stratification in IVF Cryostorage.

BACKGROUND: Cryogenic Dewars used for IVF cryostorage are commonly evaluated through periodic inspections and evaporation measurements, which may delay the detection of insulation degradation or lead to premature Dewar retirement. Conventional failure models emphasize catastrophic vacuum loss; however, field observations suggest that many Dewars exhibit transient or progressive thermal anomalies prior to permanent failure. METHODS: A retrospective observational study was conducted using longitudinal liquid nitrogen (LN2) temperature telemetry data acquired from static IVF cryostorage units op

Data analytics-based evaluation of blood indices and adaptation of medicated and non-medicated broiler chickens under humid tropical conditions.

The growth performance and blood indices of medicated and non-medicated broiler chickens have been the subject of this research coupled with a paucity of comparative information on what can actually happen to broiler chickens if not medicated when reared under humid tropical conditions. One hundred unsexed day-old broilers were randomly and equally allotted into two treatment groups of TM (medicated) and TN (non-medicated) in a completely randomized design each treatment with five replicates having ten birds each. The birds were reared on deep litter system for 56 d which was divided into two
