EMR Database Upgrade from MUMPS to CACHE: Lessons Learned.

Over the past few years, Saudi hospitals have been implementing and upgrading Electronic Medical Record Systems (EMRs) to ensure secure data transfer and exchange between EMRs.This paper focuses on the process and lessons learned in upgrading the MUMPS database to a the newer Caché database to ensure the integrity of electronic data transfer within a local Saudi hospital. This paper examines the steps taken by the departments concerned, their action plans and how the change process was managed. Results show that user satisfaction was achieved after the upgrade was completed. The system was sta

A bioinformatics framework for genotype-phenotype correlation in humans with Marfan syndrome caused by FBN1 gene mutations.

Mutations in the human FBN1 gene are known to be associated with the Marfan syndrome, an autosomal dominant inherited multi-systemic connective tissue disorder. However, in the absence of solid genotype-phenotype correlations, the identification of an FBN1 mutation has only little prognostic value. We propose a bioinformatics framework for the mutated FBN1 gene which comprises the collection, management, and analysis of mutation data identified by molecular genetic analysis (DHPLC) and data of the clinical phenotype. To query our database at different levels of information, a relational data m

NEOBASE: databasing the neocortical microcircuit.

Mammals adapt to a rapidly changing world because of the sophisticated perceptual and cognitive function enabled by the neocortex. The neocortex, which has expanded to constitute nearly 80% of the human brain seems to have arisen from repeated duplication of a stereotypical template of neurons and synaptic circuits with subtle specializations in different brain regions and species. Determining the design and function of this microcircuitry is therefore of paramount importance to understanding normal and abnormal higher brain function. Recent advances in recording synaptically-coupled neurons h

Automated classification of Pap smear images to detect cervical dysplasia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The present study proposes an intelligent system for automatic categorization of Pap smear images to detect cervical dysplasia, which has been an open problem ongoing for last five decades. METHODS: The classification technique is based on shape, texture and color features. It classifies the cervical dysplasia into two-level (normal and abnormal) and three-level (Negative for Intraepithelial Lesion or Malignancy, Low-grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesion and High-grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesion) classes reflecting the established Bethesda system of classificat

[Design and implementation of Chinese materia medica resources survey results display system].

From the beginning of the fourth national census of traditional Chinese medicine resources in 2011, a large amount of data have been collected and compiled, including wild medicinal plant resource data, cultivation of medicinal plant information, traditional knowledge, and specimen information. The traditional paper-based recording method is inconvenient for query and application. The B/S architecture, JavaWeb framework and SOA are used to design and develop the fourth national census results display platform. Through the data integration and sorting, the users are to provide with integrated d

Discovery of novel CB2 receptor ligands by a pharmacophore-based virtual screening workflow.

Cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB(2) receptor) ligands are potential candidates for the therapy of chronic pain, inflammatory disorders, atherosclerosis, and osteoporosis. We describe the development of pharmacophore models for CB(2) receptor ligands, as well as a pharmacophore-based virtual screening workflow, which resulted in 14 hits for experimental follow-up. Seven compounds were identified with K(i) values below 25 microM. The CB(2) receptor-selective pyridine tetrahydrocannabinol analogue 8 (K(i) = 1.78 microM) was identified as a CB(2) partial agonist. Acetamides 12 (K(i) = 1.35 microM) and 1

Prediction of extubation failure for neonates with respiratory distress syndrome using the MIMIC-II clinical database.

Extubation failure (EF) is an ongoing problem in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Nearly 25% of neonates fail their first extubation attempt, requiring re-intubations that are associated with risk factors and financial costs. We identified 179 mechanically ventilated neonatal patients that were intubated within 24 hours of birth in the MIMIC-II intensive care database. We analyzed data from the patients 2 hours prior to their first extubation attempt, and developed a prediction algorithm to distinguish patients whose extubation attempt was successful from those that had EF. From an ini

A managed care workstation for support of ambulatory care in Veterans Health Administration medical centers.

This paper describes the development of a Managed Care Workstation for implementation in a Department of Veterans Affairs hospital. Each VA hospital information system contains a wealth of information in a comprehensive and well integrated M database, however, a clinician's access to the information is hampered by a lack of usable database tools. The Managed Care Workstation is designed to enhance access to VA databases. The workstation uses M (Mumps) and SQL to present the VA's M hierarchical database as relational tables on the workstation. This work reveals the benefits of using a SQL-M wor

[New concept of computer-based documentation of retinal findings in retinopathy of prematurity].

BACKGROUND: Pathological findings and clinical course of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) are often documented with hand drawings. The use of software-based standardised symbols for ROP staging leads to improved documentation quality. METHODS: We developed graphical symbols for all ROP stages as well as plus disease. All of the symbols were integrated into a java-based application as a particular ROP category of a complete symbol library for retinal changes. The symbols can be placed on a schematic retina with a mouse click. Using anchors each symbol can be individually adapted to the specifi

[Multimodal document management in radiotherapy].

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: After incorporating treatment planning and the organisational model of treatment planning in the operating schedule system (BAS, "Betriebsablaufsystem"), complete document qualities were embedded in the digital environment. The aim of this project was to integrate all documents independent of their source (paper-bound or digital) and to make content from the BAS available in a structured manner. As many workflow steps as possible should be automated, e.g. assigning a document to a patient in the BAS. Additionally it must be guaranteed that at all times it could be trace

Science fiction becomes reality with M technologies.

Sophisticated data management--the ability to share information across geographical and technical boundaries via heterogeneous networks with seamless interoperability--was the stuff of science fiction just a few years ago. It is now a reality with M. Thomas Salander, vice chair of the M Technology Association and chairman of the MUMPS Development Committee, sets the scene and shows the way.

Some principles of the development of a clinical database/national register of selected inflammatory rheumatic diseases in the Czech Republic.

According to the World Health Organisation, rheumatic diseases are likely to go on occupying a prominent place worldwide. As to US statistics, rheumatic diseases are currently the most frequent chronic disorders and leading cause of disability. The development of functional clinical database or rheumatic diseases represents an essential condition how to acquire necessary epidemiological and other information on disorders under study. In 1999-2003, Institute of Rheumatology in cooperation with EuroMISE have developed clinical database/national register of selected systemic inflammatory rheumati

An ontology of randomized controlled trials for evidence-based practice: content specification and evaluation using the competency decomposition method.

Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are one of the least biased sources of clinical research evidence, and are therefore a critical resource for the practice of evidence-based medicine. With over 10,000 new RCTs indexed in Medline each year, knowledge systems are needed to help clinicians translate evidence into practice. Common ontologies for RCTs and other domains would facilitate the development of these knowledge systems. However, no standard method exists for developing domain ontologies. In this paper, we describe a new systematic approach to specifying and evaluating the conceptual cont

ICBS: a database of interactions between protein chains mediated by beta-sheet formation.

MOTIVATION: Interchain beta-sheet (ICBS) interactions occur widely in protein quaternary structures, interactions between proteins and protein aggregation. These interactions play a central role in many biological processes and in diseases ranging from AIDS and cancer to anthrax and Alzheimer's. RESULTS: We have created a comprehensive database of ICBS interactions that is updated on a weekly basis and allows entries to be sorted and searched by relevance and other criteria through a simple Web interface. We derive a simple ICBS index to quantify the relative contributions of the beta-ladders

The role of indocyanine green videoangiography with FLOW 800 analysis for the surgical management of central nervous system tumors: an update.

OBJECTIVE Indocyanine green videoangiography (ICG-VA) is an intraoperative technique used to highlight vessels in neurovascular surgery. Its application in the study of the vascular pathophysiology in CNS tumors and its role in their surgical management are still rather limited. A recent innovation of ICG-VA (i.e., the FLOW 800 algorithm integrated in the surgical microscope) allows a semiquantitative evaluation of cerebral blood flow. The aim of this study was to evaluate for the first time the systematic application of ICG-VA and FLOW 800 analysis during surgical removal of CNS tumors. METHO

A set of ontologies to drive tools for the control of vector-borne diseases.

We are developing a set of ontologies dealing with vector-borne diseases as well as the arthropod vectors that transmit them. After building ontologies for mosquito and tick anatomy we continued this project with an ontology of insecticide resistance followed by a series of ontologies that describe malaria as well as physiological processes of mosquitoes that are relevant to, and involved in, disease transmission. These will later be expanded to encompass other vector-borne diseases as well as non-mosquito vectors. The aim of the whole undertaking, which is worked out in the frame of the inter
