Deficits in Social Cognition: An Unveiled Signature of Multiple Sclerosis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic progressive inflammatory disease of the central nervous system, representing the primary cause of non-traumatic disability in young adults. Cognitive dysfunction can affect patients at any time during the disease process and might alter the six core functional domains. Social cognition is a multi-component construct that includes the theory of mind, empathy and social perception of emotions from facial, bodily and vocal cues. Deficits in this cognitive faculty might have a drastic impact on interpersonal relationships and quality

Cervical Rib Prevalence and its Association with Thoracic Outlet Syndrome: A Meta-Analysis of 141 Studies with Surgical Considerations.

BACKGROUND: Cervical ribs (CR) are supernumerary ribs that arise from the seventh cervical vertebra. In the presence of CR, the boundaries of the interscalene triangle can be further constricted and result in neurovascular compression and thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS). The aim of our study was to provide a comprehensive evidence-based assessment of CR prevalence and their association with TOS as well as surgical approach to excision of CR and surgical patients' characteristics. METHODS: A thorough search of major electronic databases was conducted to identify any relevant studies. Data on th

Clinical pharmacology of comorbid obsessive-compulsive disorder in Tourette syndrome.

Treatment of Tourette Syndrome (TS) and its comorbidities is symptomatic and directed to improve the patient's social functioning and quality of life, to reduce the impairment from comorbid disorders, and to control tics severity. Often the pharmacological treatment combined with the multidisciplinary treatment is intended for comorbid disorders rather than for the tics themselves. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is one of the most common comorbid conditions. Even so, to our knowledge no clinical trials have specifically evaluated the treatment of OC symptoms in TS patients. After a brief

Cognitive functioning in Alzheimer's and vascular dementia: a meta-analysis.

Differentiating between Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VaD) remains difficult but important if existing pharmacological treatments are to provide symptomatic relief in the case of AD or to alter disease progression in the case of VaD. Cognitive assessments play an important role in aiding diagnosis, despite a lack of clear evidence defining the cognitive abilities and tests that best distinguish between the two types of dementia. The current study therefore completed a meta-analysis of research comparing the cognitive abilities of persons diagnosed with AD and VaD. A comprehen

Patient delay in TIA: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Patients who suffer a transient ischemic attack (TIA) have a high short-term risk of developing ischemic stroke, notably within the first 48 h. Timely diagnosis and urgent preventive treatment substantially reduce this risk. We conducted a systemic review to quantify patient delay in patients with (suspected) TIA, and assess determinants related to such delay. METHODS: A systematic review using MEDLINE and EMBASE databases up to March 2017 to identify studies reporting the time from onset of TIA symptoms to seeking medical help. RESULTS: We identified nine studies providing data

Potential and Limitations of Neural Decompression in Extreme Lateral Interbody Fusion-A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Extreme lateral interbody fusion (ELIF) is a powerful tool for interbody fusion and coronal deformity correction. However, evidence regarding the success of ELIF in decompressing foraminal, lateral recess, and central canal stenosis is lacking. We performed a systematic review of current literature on the potential and limitations of ELIF to indirectly decompress neural elements. METHODS: A literature search using PubMed, Cochrane, and ScienceDirect databases was performed according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses criteria. Diffusion alterations associated with Parkinson's disease symptomatology: A review of the literature.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a heterogeneous neurological disorder with a variety of motor and non-motor symptoms. The underlying mechanisms of these symptoms are not fully understood. An increased interest in structural connectivity analyses using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in PD has led to an expansion of our understanding of the impact of abnormalities in diffusivity on phenotype. This review outlines the contribution of these abnormalities to symptoms of PD including bradykinesia, tremor and non-tremor phenotypes, freezing of gait, cognitive impairment, mood, sleep disturbances, visual

The Management and Outcomes of Pharmacological Treatments for Tinnitus.

Tinnitus, a phantom sensation experienced by people around the world, currently is endured without a known cure. Some find the condition tolerable, while others are tortured on a daily basis from the incessant phantom noises. For those who seek treatment, oftentimes, they have a comorbid condition (e.g., depression, anxiety, insomnia), which is treated pharmaceutically. These products aim to reduce the comorbities associated with tinnitus thereby minimizing the overall burden present. Because of the phantom nature of tinnitus, it is often compared to neurologic pain. Since pain can be managed

Polymorphisms in the vitamin D receptor gene and risk of primary biliary cirrhosis: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is a chronic and progressive cholestatic autoimmune liver disease. Although many studies have evaluated the association between many functional polymorphisms in the vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene and PBC risk, debates still exist. Our aim is to evaluate the association between VDR gene polymorphisms, including TaqI (rs731236), BsmI (rs1544410), and ApaI (rs7975232), and the risk of PBC by a systematic review. METHODS: We searched literatures in PubMed, SCOPUS, and EMBASE until July 2013. We calculated pooled odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidenc

Sexual dysfunction related to drugs: a critical review. Part IV: cardiovascular drugs.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual dysfunction is a potential side effect of cardiovascular drugs: this article is a critical review of the current literature. Many studies have been published on this topic. Most of these studies are not methodologically robust, few are RCTs and most did not use a validated rating scale to evaluate sexual functioning. In addition, other methodological flaws limit greatly the conclusions of these studies. Most studies relate to male populations and only a few have been conducted on women. Also, the majority of studies on sexual dysfunction induced by cardiovascular drugs rel
