The Role of COVID-19 in the Death of SARS-CoV-2-Positive Patients: A Study Based on Death Certificates.

Background: Death certificates are considered the most reliable source of information to compare cause-specific mortality across countries. The aim of the present study was to examine death certificates of persons who tested positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) to (a) quantify the number of deaths directly caused by coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19); (b) estimate the most common complications leading to death; and (c) identify the most common comorbidities. Methods: Death certificates of persons who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 provided to the National Surveill

Medical certificate of cause of death: Looking for an European single standard.

The European Union share many laws, and medical certification of cause of death standards should be probably one of them. In an analysis of medical certificates of cause of death (MCCD) from 27 countries that form or formed part of the European Union, there was considerable variability of their content. Ways to improve and harmonize the current datasets are suggested, based on what is done in different European nations, and that could be adopted elsewhere, sharing good practice. It is also suggested the need to allow the cause of death to be, at least partially, available to relatives, to help

Death certificate completion skills of hospital physicians in a developing country.

BACKGROUND: Death certificates (DC) can provide valuable health status data regarding disease incidence, prevalence and mortality in a community. It can guide local health policy and help in setting priorities. Incomplete and inaccurate DC data, on the other hand, can significantly impair the precision of a national health information database. In this study we evaluated the accuracy of death certificates at a tertiary care teaching hospital in a Karachi, Pakistan. METHODS: A retrospective study conducted at Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan for a period of six months. Medical r

Death certification following MRSA bacteraemia, England, 2004-05.

This study examined factors affecting whether or not meticillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA) is recorded on the death certificate of individuals who died following a laboratory confirmed MRSA bacteraemia and compared this with another organism, Streptococcus pneumoniae. The study included all patients with a positive MRSA or S. pneumoniae bacteraemia reported to the Health Protection Agency between 1 January 2004 and 31 December 2005 and linked to a death registered up to 31 March 2006. It was an opportunistic analysis of infection surveillance records and death registrations that had

Death certification and doctors' dilemmas: a qualitative study of GPs' perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Death certificate inaccuracies have implications for funding and planning public health services, health research and family settlements. Improved training has been identified as a way of reducing inaccuracies. Understanding the influences on certifying doctors should inform that training. AIM: To explore what factors influence GPs as they complete death certificates. DESIGN: Focus groups held by teleconference with 16 GPs. SETTING: New Zealand general practice. METHOD: Four teleconferenced focus groups were taped and transcribed. Transcripts were examined for emerging themes.

Why are a quarter of all cancer deaths in south-east England registered by death certificate only? Factors related to death certificate only registrations in the Thames Cancer Registry between 1987 and 1989.

This paper describes the results of a study set up to investigate factors associated with the high proportions of 'death certificate only' registrations (DCOs) for all cancers registered in south-east England between 1987 and 1989 and to identify those which might be subject to registry intervention. DCOs as a proportion of all registrations (n = 162,131) were analysed by age, sex, district of residence, place of death and survival. DCO registration ratios (standardised for age and sex) were then derived for each of the 56 districts in the Thames Regions. A multiple logistic regression model w

[COVID-19- and influenza-associated deaths in Munich as of March 2020-a standardized analysis of death certificates].

INTRODUCTION: In light of the current COVID-19 pandemic, the idea arose to conduct a study to comparatively evaluate deaths from two respiratory transmissible infectious diseases (pandemic COVID-19 and seasonal influenza) by means of death certificates received by the health department. METHODS: Death certificates of all deaths in Munich in the death period from 1 March-31 December 2020 were analyzed. The predefined inclusion criteria were the indication of "Corona, COVID-19, SARS-CoV‑2, Influenza (A/B)" on the death certificates. Standardized data entry was performed. The collected data were

Cause-specific mortality patterns among hospital deaths in Thailand: validating routine death certification.

BACKGROUND: In Thailand, 35% of all deaths occur in hospitals, and the cause of death is medically certified by attending physicians. About 15% of hospital deaths are registered with nonspecific diagnoses, despite the potential for greater accuracy using information available from medical records. Further, issues arising from transcription of diagnoses from Thai to English at registration create uncertainty about the accuracy of registration data even for specified causes of death. This paper reports findings from a study to measure validity of registered diagnoses in a sample of deaths that o

Medical Certificates of Cause of Death for people with intellectual disabilities: A systematic literature review.

BACKGROUND: Mortality studies can help reduce health inequalities by informing public policy through a better understanding of causes of death and comorbidities. Mortality studies often rely on Medical Certificates of Cause of Death (MCCD) for data. METHOD: A systematic review was undertaken to identify the extent and nature of issues in recording causes of death for people with intellectual disability on MCCD. RESULTS: Fifteen of the 25 articles included in the literature review raised concerns about the accuracy of MCCD in identifying the cause(s) of death of people with intellectual disab

[Reliability and validity of uterine cancer death certificates in the municipality of Belém, Pará, Brazil].

Belém, Pará State, Brazil, presents high mortality rates for uterine cervical cancer, thus justifying an analysis of the reliability and validity of data on this underlying cause of death. Death certificates for Belém residents who died in 1998-1999 from neoplasms of the uterine cervix, uterine body, or unspecified uterine site, or with mention of such a neoplasm on any line in the death certificate, were selected, amounting to 188 death certificates (DCs). All DCs were submitted to new coding, and reliability analysis was performed by simple agreement and Cohen's kappa. The underlying cause o

Ill-defined and multiple causes on death certificates--a study of misclassification in mortality statistics.

Biases can distort, limit or inhibit the value of mortality data as an epidemiological re source. From 9500 deaths occurring in Naples (Italy during 1994, a random sample of 372 death certificates reporting ill-defined causes and multiple causes of death was extracted. The code for the underlying cause on the death certificate (assigned code) was compared with the cause reattributed with the aid of interview of the certifying physician or clinical records (modified code). The aim was to investigate the extent of misclassification of 'underlying cause' in deaths attributed to ill-defined and/or

Overcoming the limitations of 'accident' as a manner of death for drug overdose mortality: case for a death certificate checkbox.

Collectively, the epidemic increases in the United States of opioid-related deaths and suicides during the first two decades of the 21st century have exposed shortcomings in current forensic and epidemiological approaches for determining and codifying manner of death-a vital function fulfilled by medical examiners, coroners and nosologists-the foundation for the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS), an incident-based surveillance system providing individual-level information on decedent characteristics, manner, cause and circumstances of suicide, homicide and other violent injury de

Injury death certificates without specification of the circumstances leading to the fatal injury - the Norwegian Cause of Death Registry 2005-2014.

BACKGROUND: For injury deaths, the underlying cause of death is defined as the circumstances leading to the injury. When this information is missing, the ICD-10 code X59 (Exposure to unspecified factor) is used. Lack of knowledge of factors causing injuries reduces the value of the cause of death statistics. The aim of this study was to identify predictors of X59-coded deaths in Norway, and to assess methods to identify the true underlying cause of injury deaths. METHODS: We used data from the Norwegian Cause of Death Registry from 2005 to 2014. We used logistic regression to identify determi

Comparison of cause of death coding on death certificates with coding in the Royal College of General Practitioners Oral Contraception Study.

A comparison has been made between the coding of the cause of death by (a) the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) during the Oral Contraception Study and (b) the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys (OPCS) or the General Register Office for Scotland (GRO) on death certificates for the same subjects. Broad grouping of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) showed close agreement between RCGP and OPCS or GRO coding for all deaths which occurred from the start of the Oral Contraception Study in 1968 up to December 1978. Moreover, where discrepancies occurred there were

[Occupational mortality in Italy during 1992, assessed through record-linkage between pension records and death certificates].

BACKGROUND: The creation of a surveillance system of occupational mortality in Italy is limited by the low quality of information on occupation in death certificates, since the information is often incomplete or lacking and because only the occupation at the time of death is registered. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the possible use of INPS (National Institute of Social Security) records for the purpose of surveillance of occupational mortality, in terms of feasibility of setting up a system and of validity of the results obtained. METHODS: Death records of 218,510 subjects aged 18-74, deceased in

Differentiating cause-of-death terminology for deaths coded as sudden infant death syndrome, accidental suffocation, and unknown cause: an investigation using US death certificates, 2003-2004.

We compared written text on infant death certificates for deaths coded as sudden infant death syndrome (R95), unknown cause (R99), and accidental suffocation (W75). Using US mortality files supplemented with the death certifiers' written text for all infant deaths with International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-10 assigned codes R95, R99, and W75, we formed cause-of-death subcategories from common themes identified from the written text. Among all infant deaths in 2003-2004, the underlying cause of death was listed as R99 for 2128 deaths, R95 for 4408 deaths, and W75 for 931 deaths. Among

Death certificate data of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in easternmost Finland.

Objective: Topical data on causes of death and death certificate (DC) accuracy in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) are constantly needed. Methods: Data on a previously published ALS cohort from North Karelia in easternmost Finland was updated by extracting DC information from the electronic health records. Results: Death certificate data were available for 91% of the deceased. In all cases, ALS had been coded as a cause of death. In four cases, it had been inserted as a contributory cause of death. In three cases, ALS was indicated but incorrect coding was used. Three of the f

Aspergillosis-Attributable Mortality in the United States: Analysis of Death Certificate Data.

BACKGROUND: The nationwide attributable mortality of aspergillosis in the era of mold-active triazoles is poorly understood. METHODS: We analyzed data from the US National Vital Statistics System for 2018-2024. Aspergillosis-attributable mortality was identified using an International Classification of Diseases-10th Revision (ICD-10) diagnosis code of B44.x listed anywhere on the death certificate. We present age-adjusted mortality rates (AAMRs)/1 000 000 persons with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for aspergillosis deaths and stratified by demographics. Risk ratios (RRs) were used to compare
