Synthesis and characterization of MoSe2 nanoscrolls via pulsed laser ablation in deep eutectic solvents.

There is ongoing interest in the rapid, reproducible production of 2-dimensional (2-D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD), such as molybdenum-based TMD (MoX2), where X is a chalcogen atom such as sulphur (S), selenium (Se) or tellurium (Te), driven by their unique optical and electronic properties. Once fabricated into an atomically thin layer structure, these materials have a direct-indirect bandgap transition, strong spin-orbit coupling, and favourable electronic and mechanical strain-dependent properties which are attractive for electronics. Pulsed laser ablation in liquid (PLAL) is an

Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents for the Extraction of Spilanthol from Acmella oleracea (L.) R.K.Jansen.

With a growing focus on green chemistry, the extraction of natural products with natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES), which are eutectic mixtures of hydrogen bond donors and acceptors, has become an ever-expanding field of research. However, the use of NADES for the extraction of spilanthol from Acmella oleracea (L.) R.K.Jansen has not yet been investigated. Therefore, in this study, 20 choline chloride-based NADES, and for comparison, ethanol, were used as green extraction agents for spilanthol from Acmella oleracea flower heads. The effects of time, water addition, and temperature on NADE

Combined experimental and computational investigation of tetrabutylammonium bromide-carboxylic acid-based deep eutectic solvents.

Aiming at shedding light on the molecular interactions in deep eutectic solvents (DESs), the DESs based on tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) as hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) and carboxylic acids (CAs) (formic acid (FA), oxalic acid (OA), and malonic acid (MA)) as hydrogen bond donor (HBD) were investigated by both experimental and theoretical techniques. The thermal behaviors of the prepared DESs were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) method. In order to study the hydrogen bond formation between the DESs constituents, the FT-IR analysis was carried out. The large positive

Facile Preparation of Polymerizable Deep Eutectic Solvents Under Mild Conditions for Multisensory Ionic Skins.

Polymerizable deep eutectic solvents (PDESs) have emerged as promising building blocks for next-generation eutectic gels, offering new opportunities for the development of advanced electronic devices. Traditional PDES fabrication typically involves heating and extended processing time. In this study, a facile method where a solid-solid mixture of lithium bis(trifluoromethane) sulfonimide (LiTFSI) and acrylamide (AAm) rapidly forms a PDES at room temperature, significantly simplifying the ionogel preparation is presented. By combining this PDES with another system, comprising 3-[dimethyl-[2-(2-

Green synthesis of novel spiropyrazoline-indolinones in neutral deep eutectic solvents and DFT studies.

Novel spiropyrazoline-indolinones (4a-t) have been synthesized successfully in neutral deep eutectic solvents by reacting 5-Cl/Br-isatin (1a-b) with aromatic ketones (2a-b) and a variety of substituted hydrazines (3a-e) in good to excellent yields. This eco-friendly straightforward synthetic protocol discloses good functional group compatibility. The conventional synthetic approach was compared with the greener route of microwave-assisted synthesis of spiropyrazolines using ethanol. This approach utilized mild reaction conditions which furnished high yields in short reaction time employing one

Properties of Therapeutic Deep Eutectic Solvents of l-Arginine and Ethambutol for Tuberculosis Treatment.

The treatment for tuberculosis infection usually involves a prolonged regimen of multiple antibacterial drugs, which might lead to various secondary effects. For preventing drug resistance and side-effects of anti-tuberculosis drugs, new methods for improving the bioavailability of APIs were investigated. The strategy proposed consists of the preparation of therapeutic deep eutectic solvents (THEDES), that incorporate l-arginine and ethambutol. The eutectic mixtures were prepared by mixing the components at a certain molar ratio, until a clear liquid solution was formed. The prepared mixtures

Biocatalytic transformation of Ganoderma lucidum by porcine pancreatic lipase in hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents.

Enzyme applications in industry are often limited by low stability, poor reusability and challenging recovery. This study presents a sustainable strategy for enhancing enzyme performance by immobilizing porcine pancreatic lipase (PPL) onto Ganoderma lucidum using a hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent (HDES) as a reaction medium to facilitate enzyme immobilization. Among several HDESs tested, menthol:decanoic acid (HDES 1) showed the highest lipase activity (198.38%) and was selected for immobilization. Under optimized conditions (3 h, 40 °C, pH 7.0), the immobilized PPL achieved 212.41% catalyti

Broad-spectrum light-responsive deep eutectic solvents for ambient microalgae disintegration with intact fractions.

INTRODUCTION: Rationally integrating microalgae valorization is pivotal to sustainable and cost-competitive biorefineries. However, a trade-off exists between effective disintegration of recalcitrant microalgae and retention of biomolecular integrity. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to develop a mild, light-responsive pretreatment platform that reconciles structure integrity-efficiency trade-off without relying on energy-intensive external reinforcement. METHODS: An "(in)organic hybridizing dual-amplification" maneuver is delivered to construct a ternary deep eutectic solvent (DES) system compos

Molecular Evaluation of Deep Eutectic Solvents for Wet Algae Lipid Extraction and Biofuel Production.

Microalgae represent promising feedstocks for biofuel production, yet cell-wall disruption remains a critical bottleneck for scaling up lipid extraction. This study evaluates four cholinium-based ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as green, energy-efficient pretreatment agents to facilitate the lipid release from Chlorella vulgaris under wet conditions. A geranic acid-based DES (CG 1-2 DES) was identified as the optimal agent, demonstrating direct wet biomass extraction with substantial process energy savings at comparable overall lipid yields. To minimize the energetic cost

Deep eutectic solvents for the synthesis of covalent organic frameworks: from boundaries to possibilities.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a class of crystalline porous materials assembled from discrete molecular building blocks, offering exceptional tunability and functionality that underpin their broad range of applications. However, conventional solvothermal routes for COF synthesis often rely on toxic organic solvents, high energy input, cumbersome degassing procedures and long reaction durations, posing significant environmental and scalability concerns. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs), composed of hydrogen-bond donor-acceptor pairs, have recently emerged as sustainable media for chemical

Scale-dependent transport in deep eutectic solvents: nanoscale dynamics of cholinium ions in reline.

Transport in deep eutectic solvents (DESs) exhibits a pronounced dependence on length scale, with macroscopic hydrodynamic descriptions failing to capture the complex dynamics that emerge at the molecular level. This study seeks to elucidate the molecular origins of these transport anomalies by examining the nanoscale diffusion of cholinium ions within reline using quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS). Our findings reveal that nanoscale transport within DESs arises from a combination of two distinct dynamical processes: rapid localized motion and slower long-range translational diffusion. Th

Supramolecular Deep Eutectic Solvents as a Janus Green Platform: Integrating Curcuminoid Extraction and Biopolymer.

Curcuminoids from Curcuma longa L. (curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, bisdemethoxycurcumin) are attractive bioactives yet constrained by low water solubility and chemical instability. Herein, we introduce a Supramolecular Deep Eutectic Solvent (SupraDES) as a "Janus" green platform, combining extraction and stabilization with a subsequent solvent-to-material strategy. Eight NaDES/SupraDES formulations based on choline chloride (ChCl) or betaine with glycerol (Gly) or citric acid (CitA), with/without β-cyclodextrin (βCD), were assessed. The extinction coefficients of the most promising solvents were

Hydrophobic Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents for Sustainable CO2 Capture: Molecular Insights From Multiscale Modeling.

This research delves into the physicochemical properties and CO2 capture ability of a hydrophobic natural deep eutectic solvent (HNADES) consisting of piperitone (PIP) and linoleic acid in a 1:1 molar ratio. Through a multiscale computational approach involving COSMO-RS calculations, quantum chemistry methods, and molecular dynamics simulations, we demonstrate that the considered system, via the development of strong hydrogen bonding interactions, both homo- and hetero-associations, and in parallel with nonpolar domains through van der Waals interactions, creates a suitable situation for CO2 c

Deep Eutectic Solvents in Polymeric Drug Carriers: Insights into Release Behavior and Functional Integration.

Incorporating deep eutectic solvents (DES) into polymer-based drug delivery systems (DDS) presents a novel approach to addressing persistent pharmaceutical issues, including low solubility, restricted bioavailability, and unregulated drug release. As environmentally friendly, adjustable, and biocompatible alternatives to traditional organic solvents and ionic liquids, DES possess distinctive physicochemical characteristics-such as strong hydrogen-bonding ability, low volatility, and structural flexibility-that make them effective as functional excipients. This review consolidates a contemporar

CO2 adsorption in natural deep eutectic solvents: insights from quantum mechanics and molecular dynamics.

CO2 capture is an important process for mitigating CO2 emissions in the atmosphere. Recently, ionic liquids have been identified as possible systems for CO2 capture processes. Major drawbacks of such systems are mostly in the high cost of synthesis of such liquids and poor biodegradability. Natural deep eutectic solvents, a class of eutectic solvents using materials of natural origin, have been developed, which compared to ionic liquids are low-cost and more environmentally benign. However, very little is known on the details at a molecular level that govern the CO2 adsorption in these systems

Microfluidic liquid-phase microextraction based on natural deep eutectic solvents immobilized in agarose membranes.

In liquid-phase microextraction (LPME), the sample and the acceptor are separated by a synthetic organic solvent, which is immobilized in a porous polymeric membrane of polypropylene or polyvinylidene fluoride. The organic solvent serves as extraction phase, while the polymeric membrane serves as support membrane. The combination of extraction phase and support membrane is termed supported liquid membrane (SLM). In this paper, we developed for the first time fully green and biodegradable supported SLMs, based on natural deep eutectic solvents as extraction phase and agarose as support membrane

Green Solvent Pretreatment of Biomass: Insights into Lignin Structural Evolution in Organosolv and Deep Eutectic Solvent Systems.

Lignocellulosic biomass is a key renewable resource for producing biofuels, biomaterials, and high-value chemicals, but its efficient utilization is hindered by the recalcitrant lignin-carbohydrate complex (LCC) network. Organosolv (OS) and deep eutectic solvent (DES) pretreatments have emerged as promising green strategies for biomass fractionation and lignin extraction. The present work summarizes recent advances in OS and DES pretreatment, with a particular focus on the mechanisms of lignin depolymerization and structural evolution, including changes in major bonds, functional groups, S/G r

Development of Novel Catalytic Deep Eutectic Solvent for Esterification and Elucidation of Dynamic Solvent-Enzyme-Substrate Adaptability.

Biocatalytic ester synthesis often encounters bottlenecks like vast substrate polarity differences and reliance on toxic solvents or activated acyl donors, severely limiting industrial expansion. To address this, a novel catalytic deep eutectic solvent (CDES) system composed of cyclohexanone, stearic acid, and N-methylimidazole (CS-NMI) was developed. This study utilized an extreme esterification, sucrose stearate synthesis, as a model reaction due to the immense substrate sizes and polarity differences. After optimization, the conversion for sucrose stearate synthesis reached 98.2± 0.7%, rema

Activity-Coefficient-Guided Heuristics for Deep Eutectic Solvent Fractionation of Kraft Lignin.

The valorization of technical lignin requires fractionation strategies that deliver chemically and thermally distinct lignin streams with predictable structure-property relationships while minimizing hazardous solvent use. Here, we propose a preliminary, exploratory thermodynamic design framework for lignin fractionation based on deep eutectic solvents (DESs), using activity coefficients as quantitative descriptors of solvent-solute interactions. Six chloride-based DESs were synthesized and characterized through freezing-point depression, FTIR spectroscopy, and Schröder-Le Chatelier analysis.
