AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the early treatment of atypical deglutition, by analysing the efficacy of the eruptive guide appliance Habit Corrector™.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The pre- and post-treatment (T1 and T2) cephalometric data of 2 groups of patients (G1 and G2), both consisting of 25 patients each and treated with Habit Corrector™, were compared. The first group included 10 males and 15 females, aged between 4 and 7 years old, with average age 6.17 years, and therefore undergoing the last phase of primary dentition and the first phase of mixed dentition. The second group i

At oesophagogastroscopy a web was seen in the upper oesophagus in a female of 73 years with dysphagia. Because she also had a smooth tongue, a low serum iron level and anaemia, the syndrome of Plummer-Vinson was diagnosed. After treatment with ferrous fumarate the dysphagia, the web and the anaemia disappeared and the serum iron rose. The symptomatology of this syndrome is discussed. Remarkably, the pathogenesis is not completely known. There are indications that this uncommon syndrome is a premalignant disorder.

Difficulties in swallowing and speaking may in rare cases be due to buccolinguofacial apraxia, which usually results from lesions of the frontal operculum--mostly on the left side--or of connections to and from it. Two cases with this disorder, probably due to a multiple sclerosis, are presented and the differential diagnosis is discussed.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate any change in deglutitive tongue movement following the correction of malocclusion by orthognathic surgery.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The subjects were nine patients with mandibular protrusion. A control group consisted of 10 individuals with a similar age range and normal occlusion. Swallowing events before and after mandibular setback via sagittal split ramus osteotomy were recorded by cineradiography, and the tongue movement was analyzed. Time and linear measurements were compared before and after surgical treatment by the Wilcoxon signed rank test; control and test

The purpose of this experiment was to confirm the presence of positive subglottic air pressure during swallowing, known as deglutitive subglottic air pressure (DPsub), in a group of healthy individuals. We also sought to determine if respiratory system recoil is responsible for generating the pressure. Ten healthy volunteers underwent direct DPsub measurement via percutaneous puncture of the cricothyroid membrane. Simultaneous DPsub and nasal airflow volumes were recorded while participants swallowed calibrated boluses over a wide range of lung volumes. Body plethysmography was used to determi

The Deglutition Handicap Index (DHI) is a self-reported questionnaire focus on dysphagia related quality of life of patients. The present study was aimed to translate the DHI into Turkish, and investigate the reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the DHI (T-DHI). A total of 100 patients with different diagnoses participated. The study was carried out in 3 phases including translation, reliability and validation phases. The translation phase was performed by the forward-backward-forward translation methodology. The internal consistency and test-retest reliability were used for reli

To explore the origin of clicking sounds in the ear during deglutition or other pharyngeal movements, which are interpreted differently in the literature. Experimental study at a tertiary referral centre. Acoustic phenomena during a forced opening test of the Eustachian tube (ET) were studied in a temporal bone model. Additionally, in vivo experiments were carried out in healthy volunteers for ruling out movements of the ossicular chain or the drumhead as potential causes of clicks. Thus, acoustic recordings were performed parallel to stapedius or tensor reflex measurements or pneumatic video

UNLABELLED: For several factors, not yet fully explained until now, infant deglutition may persist after changing the primary teeth and such swallowing is classified as atypical swallowing. Possible causes: finger sucking, bottle feeding, sucking the tongue and mouth breathing. There is no consensus about the etiology of atypical deglutition.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the oropharyngeal space in side-view radiographs of children with atypical deglutition and normal deglutition.
METHODS: Retrospective study, by means of cephalometric analysis of side-view radiographs, mea

BACKGROUND: The anatomy and function of the oropharynx and larynx during deglutition can be assessed using the flexible endoscope, but this evaluation does not provide information on the oesophagus. Guided observation of oesophageal swallowing enables extended dysphagia evaluation.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the diagnostic utility of guided observation of oesophageal swallowing in the evaluation of dysphagia.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series.
METHODS: Procedures for guided observation of oesophageal swallowing were reviewed for oesophageal findings and compared with fluoroscopy and manomet

We present the case of a 62-yr-old patient who developed severe swallowing problems 5 yr after radiotherapy for a pharyngeal carcinoma. Although peripheral and cranial nerves are thought to be relatively radioresistant, cranial nerve damage can occur many years after radiotherapy. This may result in severe deglutition disorders and lead to a complete inability to eat normally. The aim is to demonstrate how these late sequelae can cause impairment of different structures involved in the swallowing process.

BACKGROUND: Swallow function is best analyzed in components because discrete component failure may be compensated for with devised maneuvers, postures, or biofeedback techniques. The present investigation examined normal deglutitive tongue function.
METHODS: Biplane videofluoroscopy synchronized with intraluminal manometry was performed in eight volunteers. Tongue surface motion was characterized as centripetal or centrifugal along seven equiangular rays emanating from the tongue center during 1-, 5-, 10-, and 20-mL swallows.
RESULTS: The tongue perimeter remained in contact with the alveola

Dysphagia due to a traumatic lesion of the foramen lacerum posterior is relatively rare. Two cases are described in which swallowing troubles were perceived when the post-traumatic coma improved; these were ascribed to a traumatic lesion of the foramen lacerum posterior injuring the cranial nerves. Treatment involves preventing inhalation and nasogastric feeding whilst starting active and early rehabilitation of swallowing. Recovery is possible in most cases without surgery.

Partial laryngectomy causes functional insufficiency on deglutition. 56 patients who had undergone partial laryngectomy were found to suffer from food aspiration into the respiratory tract during deglutition. Aspiration of food was mainly caused by: Narrowing of the inlet of the hypopharynx, due to edema in the region of the arytenoids; insufficiency of one of the two pyriform fossae; inadequate closure of the glottis. Eight out of 56 patients are suffering from aspiration of food, particularly of liquids. The age does not have any particular influence. Post-operative radiation therapy resulte

Conservation surgery for cancer of the larynx results in deglutition problems. Rehabilitation of swallowing function can successfully be managed by a team including a surgeon, a dietitian, and a nurse. This report details surgical reconstruction to prevent or treat aspiration, postsurgical dietetic management, and the nursing approach to deglutition training in a group of patients.

Deglutition syncope and carotid sinus hypersensitivity are neurally mediated events, leading to potentially dangerous arrhythmias and cardiovascular events. Mostly related to underlying gastroesophageal or cardiovascular causes, sometimes, this might not be the case. We report the first-ever documented case of deglutition syncope with acute suppurative parotitis, which resolved after resolving the parotid gland's swelling.

A 61-year-old man with left amaurosis fugax and bilateral >80% internal carotid artery stenoses underwent a left carotid endarterectomy. On the first postoperative day, he developed hypotension, bradycardia, and chest pain with food ingestion. He was diagnosed as having deglutition syncope and was treated with oral anticholinergics. Similar symptoms occurred when he underwent a right carotid endarterectomy. Deglutition syncope is a neurally mediated situational syncope resulting from vagus nerve over-activity. This is the first report of deglutition syncope associated with carotid endarterecto

Swallowing is an important defense mechanism against reflux esophagitis as it helps clear refluxed gastric contents from the esophagus, while bicarbonate in the saliva acts to neutralize acid. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of esophagitis on the deglutition reflex in anesthetized opossums. Animals perfused with either an acidified pepsin solution for 45 min or with 100 mM hydrochloric acid for 45 min on each of three consecutive days exhibited a significantly impaired deglutition reflex in comparison to baseline. Control animals perfused with 0.9% saline showed no i
