Intra-muscular follicular dendritic cell sarcoma in the thigh: A case report.

RATIONALE: Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) is an intermediate-grade malignancy originating from follicular dendritic cells. Nodal FDCS is the most common type, meaning that the extranodal type may not be recognized and could be easily misdiagnosed. Reported extranodal sites include the head and neck, retroperitoneum, spleen, liver, and gastrointestinal tract. FDCS in the soft tissue is extremely rare. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 75-year-old male presented with complaints of a localized swelling and intra-muscular soft tissue mass in the left upper thigh. DIAGNOSIS: The present tumor consist

Clinicopathological characteristics of mediastinal follicular dendritic cell sarcoma: report of three cases.

BACKGROUND: Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) is a rare malignant neoplasm of follicular dendritic cells that form a tight meshwork within lymphoid follicles. It occurs most commonly in the lymph nodes and occasionally at extranodal sites, but rarely in the mediastinum. It is an under-recognized clinical entity without clear diagnosis. Due to its rarity, FDCS is easily misdiagnosed by clinicians or pathologists. CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we report three unusual cases of mediastinal FDCS, including one with hyaline vascular Castleman's disease in woman. The clinicopathological characte

Follicular dendritic cell tumour/sarcoma: a commonly misdiagnosed tumour in the thorax.

AIMS: Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma is a rare tumour reported to occur occasionally in association with the hyaline-vascular type of Castleman's disease (HVCD). Most cases arise in lymph nodes, although extranodal presentation is described. METHODS AND RESULTS: Clinical, radiological and histological characteristics, including diagnosis on pre-resection material, were assessed in seven intrathoracic cases from five males and two females with a median age of 38 years. Clinical symptoms were related to mass location, six cases presenting within central and/or posterior mediastinal compartme

High-risk follicular dendritic cell sarcoma of the tonsil mimicking nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) is often misdiagnosed as a carcinoma or malignant lymphoma due to morphological variability. In FDCS application of routine antibody panels without CD21 and CD23 increases the misdiagnosis rate, because the tumor cells often show focal positivity for usual immunohistochemical markers. Our new case showed a distinct picture due to the uncommon tumor architecture, with extensive areas of necrosis and hemorrhage, the presence of nuclear atypia, and an increased mitotic count and Ki-67 index. These features suggest the classification of this tumor in the ca

FDG PET/CT in follicular dendritic cell sarcoma with extensive peritoneal involvement.

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) is a rare neoplasm that originates from follicular dendritic cells. A 33-year-old woman was referred because of a 2-month history of lower abdominal fullness. Enhanced T1-weighted MR images showed enhancement of the thickened pelvic peritoneum. FDG PET/CT was performed showing multiple FDG-avid lymph nodes in the parapharyngeal, bilateral supraclavicular, left axillary, mediastinal, and abdominal regions, and intense FDG uptake in the thickened mesentery and peritoneum. Pathologic findings of both the left supraclavicular lymph node and peritoneal biops

Extranodal follicular dendritic cell sarcoma of the soft palate: a case report.

Follicular dentritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) is an extremely rare malignant neoplasm arising from the accessory cells of the lymph nodes, the follicular dendritic cells. They commonly occur in the lymph nodes, but have also been reported at extranodal sites. Because of its rarity, FDCS is not easily to make a diagnosis by clinicians or pathologists. Herein, we report a soft palate tumor in a 59-year-old female, with a history of tonsillectomy. Pharynx MRI scan revealed a 4.7×3.0×3.5 cm mass at the right side of the parapharyngeal space. The pathology results returned as Follicular dentritic cell s

Histiocytic and Dendritic Cell Sarcomas of Hematopoietic Origin Share Targetable Genomic Alterations Distinct from Follicular Dendritic Cell Sarcoma.

BACKGROUND: Histiocytic and dendritic cell neoplasms are a diverse group of tumors arising from monocytic or dendritic cell lineage. Whereas the genomic features for Langerhans cell histiocytosis and Erdheim-Chester disease have been well described, other less common and often aggressive tumors in this broad category remain poorly characterized, and comparison studies across the World Health Organization diagnostic categories are lacking. METHODS: Tumor samples from a total of 102 patient cases within four major subtypes of malignant histiocytic and dendritic cell neoplasms, including 44 foll

A Case of Follicular Dendritic Cell Sarcoma of the Palatine Tonsil That Developed as a Radiation-Induced Sarcoma.

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma is a rare malignant tumor originating from follicular dendritic cells. We present the first report of such a sarcoma of the palatine tonsils that developed as a radiation-induced sarcoma. A 78-year-old man, who had undergone chemoradiotherapy for hypopharyngeal and esophageal cancer 7 years prior, presented with discomfort during swallowing. Endoscopic pharyngeal examination revealed a tumor in the right palatine tonsil which was histopathologically diagnosed as a follicular dendritic cell sarcoma. The tumor also met the diagnostic criteria for radiation-induc

A Rare Case of Follicular Dendritic Cell Sarcoma of Tonsil-Clinical Report.

BACKGROUND: Duodenocolic fistulas are uncommon but serious complications of peptic ulcer disease (PUD), resulting from the erosion of a duodenal ulcer into the colon. This connection typically forms when a chronic ulcer perforates or penetrates through the duodenum, leading to inflammation and necrosis that disrupts the normal anatomical barriers. CASE REPORT: A 66-year-old male with a history of inadequate medical follow-up, chronic nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug use, alcohol use disorder, and PUD, developed a duodenocolic fistula secondary to a perforated duodenal ulcer. Endoscopy reve

Follicular Dendritic Cell Sarcoma of the Thyroid Gland: A Rare Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) is a rare neoplasm of antigen-presenting cells within the reticuloendothelial system primarily originating in lymph nodes, but in almost one-third of the patients, extranodal sites are involved including oral cavity, tonsil, gastrointestinal tract, soft tissue, and breast. The thyroid gland is an extremely rare location for FDCS and very few cases are reported in the literature. CASE REPORT: Here, we present a 39-year-old man who presented with a swelling in the neck for 3 months and difficulty in breathing for 15 days. Following left hem

Unusual Presentation of Follicular Dendritic Cell Sarcoma as a Cystic Neck Swelling.

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma is a very rare neoplasm that most commonly involves cervical lymph nodes and usually presents as a solid mass. Presentation as a cystic neck mass is very rare. Radiological studies and aspiration cytology are often unreliable, and diagnosis is usually made after thorough clinical and pathological examination along with immunohistochemical analysis. In this article, we report a case of a 42-year-old man who presented with right-sided neck swelling of a 2-month duration. Contrast-enhanced CT showed a cystic lesion in the right side of the neck inferomedial to pa

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma: a report of 14 cases and a review of the literature.

Follicular dendritic cell sarcomas (FDCS) are grouped with the histiocytic and dendritic cell neoplasms. The natural history and response to different treatments have not been well established. The cases of 14 patients with FDCS who were seen at M. D. Anderson between 1995 and 2005 were reviewed. Median patient age was 48 years (range, 25-69 years). Histologically, four cases showed low-grade features, three cases showed low-grade features with focal high-grade features, and five cases showed high-grade features. Tumors were positive for CD21, CD23, and CD35 in 83, 90, and 44% of cases, respec

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) of the nasopharynx is a rare malignant tumor that has been described in only a few case reports, and its differential diagnoses include diverse clinicopathologic entities. FDCS is often initially misdiagnosed, especially when examining small biopsy specimens. We herein report a case of FDCS arising in the nasopharynx that was initially misdiagnosed as a nerve sheath tumor. A 44-year-old woman presented with persistent obstruction of the left nasal cavity and underwent an excisional biopsy. The specimen demonstrated morphologic and immunohistochemical fe
