Orthodontic bracket lost in the airway during orthognathic surgery.

In orthodontic treatment before orthognathic surgery, all erupted molars should be banded or bonded to prevent the creation of an occlusal step. Bonded attachments are often used rather than bands because it is easier to bond to partially erupted teeth, there is no need for orthodontic separation or cementation, and they offer improved periodontal health and patient comfort. However, bonded brackets can fail during conventional orthodontic treatment, and the chance of failure might be greater during surgical procedures. Our purpose in this article was to report an intraoperative second-molar b

Replacement of Two Missing Adjacent Teeth with Two Single-Retainer Resin-Bonded Fixed Dental Prostheses with Improved Proximal Design.

PURPOSE: To present a minimally invasive treatment approach for the replacement of two missing adjacent teeth with two single-retainer resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses (RBFDPs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two missing adjacent premolars were restored by two RBFDPs with an innovative design of the proximal section. Both RBFDPs were digitally designed and milled from monolithic 3Y-TZP zirconia ceramic using CAD/CAM. Following construction of the anterior RBFDP, a shallow interlock was designed in the area of proximal contact in the same insertion direction as the posterior RBFDP. In this way, di

Perception of Dental Caries Risk and Preventive Strategies Among Orthodontic Patients: A Cross-Sectional Survey.

INTRODUCTION: Orthodontic treatment significantly improves dental aesthetics, occlusal function, and overall oral health. However, maintaining optimal oral hygiene during treatment is challenging because of plaque accumulation around brackets, wires, and bands, which increases the risk of dental caries. Patient perceptions of caries risk and preventive strategies influence their adherence to oral hygiene measures. This study aimed to assess orthodontic patients' perceptions of dental caries risk, adherence to preventive measures, and effectiveness of oral hygiene instructions provided by ortho

A novel technique to improve postoperative stability of orthognathic surgical anterior open bite correction using temporary anchorage devices: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative stability is a significant problem in the orthognathic management of anterior open bite malocclusion. The general tendency of modern preadjusted fixed appliances is towards unwanted and unplanned extrusion of the maxillary incisor and canine teeth as the dental arch is levelling. Following surgical repositioning of the jaws, the relapse potential of the extruded anterior dentition will be to intrude, leading to some reopening of the surgically corrected anterior open bite. CASE PRESENTATION: A 19-year-old male white Caucasian patient presented with a clinically signi

Rapid and selective removal of composite from tooth surfaces with a 9.3 µm CO2 laser using spectral feedback.

OBJECTIVE: Dental composite restorative materials are color matched to the tooth and are difficult to remove by mechanical means without excessive removal or damage to peripheral enamel and dentin. Lasers are ideally suited for selective ablation to minimize healthy tissue loss when replacing existing restorations, sealants, or removing composite adhesives such as residual composite left after debonding orthodontic brackets. METHODS: In this study, a carbon dioxide laser operating at 9.3-µm with a pulse duration of 10-20-microsecond and a pulse repetition rate of ∼200 Hz was integrated with a

Inhalation of aerosols produced during the removal of fixed orthodontic appliances: a comparison of 4 enamel cleanup methods.

INTRODUCTION: During enamel cleanup after the removal of fixed appliances, aerosols, splatter, and dust are produced that can be inhaled. Although most inhaled particles are harmless, some might be associated with chronic diseases. Modern laboratory methods can now accurately simulate the human lung and predict the site of deposition of these inhaled particles. METHODS: Orthodontic brackets and bands were attached to extracted teeth to simulate complete dental arches. Four variations of enamel cleanup were used: the variables were hand-piece speed and presence or absence of water. Air samplin

Modified PEEK Resin Bonded Fixed Dental Prosthesis for a Young Cleft Lip and Palate Patient.

OBJECTIVE: This clinical report presents the use of a modified poly ether-ether ketone material as an alternative material for the fabrication of resin-bonded fixed dental prosthesis (RBFDP) framework. This new material can be used for patients allergic to metals, maintaining the same high esthetic demand of ceramics, presenting light weightness and a flexibility similar to bone as a distinct advantage over ceramic materials. CONCLUSIONS: The use of a BioHPP RBFDP framework could be considered as an alternative restoration for the replacement of missing lateral incisors in young patients with

Ovate Pontic Design in the Esthetic Replacement of Maxillary Lateral Incisors: A Case Report.

Esthetic replacement of missing teeth in the anterior maxilla requires coordinated management of gingival contours, pontic emergence profiles, restorative materials, and occlusal function. This case report describes the interdisciplinary rehabilitation of a 21-year-old female patient whose maxillary lateral incisors had been extracted following failed endodontic treatment. Clinical examination revealed a high smile line with approximately 4 mm of gingival display and bilateral Siebert Class I ridge defects at the healed extraction sites. Treatment comprised diode laser-assisted esthetic gingiv

Investigation of bacteremia after orthodontic banding and debanding following chlorhexidine mouth wash application.

This study investigates the prevalence of bacteremia after orthodontic banding and debanding, following the application of a 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate mouthwash. The banding and debanding groups were each composed of 40 young adult patients. In the banding group, patients were asked to rinse their mouth with chlorhexidine gluconate for 60 seconds just prior to fitting of the bands. In the debanding group, they were asked to use the mouthwash immediately before removal of bands and brackets. In both groups pre- and post-treatment blood samples were obtained with a strict aseptic technique. I

Adhesive esthetic treatment
of non-syndromic maxillary anterior
microdontia in young high-demanding patients: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Microdontia of the maxillary anterior teeth occurs quite frequently but is poorly documented. The literature describes several treatment choices, which are often focused on an orthodontic approach rather than a restorative one. The latest trends in restorative dentistry and the new ceramic materials, such as lithium disilicate, allow clinicians to perform esthetic rehabilitations based on microinvasive approaches that are most appropriate for younger patients. SUMMARY: Four patients, all employed in the field of dentistry, presented at our dental practice complaining of diastemata

Functionally graded bi-material interface for Porcelain Veneered Zirconia dental crowns: A study using viscoelastic finite element analysis.

OBJECTIVES: During the manufacturing of Porcelain Veneered Zirconia (PVZ) dental crowns, the veneer-core system undergoes high-temperature firing cycles and gets fused together which is then, under a controlled setting, cooled down to room temperature. During this cooling process, the mismatch in thermal properties between zirconia and porcelain leads to the development of transient and residual thermal stresses within the crown. These thermal stresses are inherent to the PVZ dental crown systems and render the crown structure weak, acting as a precursor to veneer chipping, fracture, and delam
