A total of 2275 schoolchildren 12 yr of age from the four health regions of the State of Mexico were examined for the prevalence and severity of dental caries. The proportion of caries-free children was only 10%, and the DMFS index was 6.94. 78% of the index derived from decayed surfaces, and 19% from filled surfaces. Pits and fissures of the permanent first molars were the most frequently affected surfaces. Higher dental caries scores were found in rural areas compared with the urban centers. No significant relationship was found between use of dentifrice and dental caries. Several reasons fo

Thirty-nine equine cheek teeth diagnosed as having anachoretic apical infections and also having occlusal fissure fractures, but without occlusal pulpar exposure, that had been orally extracted without causing occlusal damage and 10 control teeth were used in this study. The teeth were individually imaged by computed tomography, occlusally stained with methylene blue and visually reexamined, then sectioned subocclusally at 5 mm intervals until the fissure fractures could no longer be detected. A limited histological study was then performed on 7 apically infected and 5 control teeth. Standard

INTRODUCTION: In recent years, the dental profession's focus has shifted from the therapeutic to the preventive aspect of dental caries. Pit and fissure sealants, optimal fluoridation, healthy dietary habits, and good oral hygiene have been recommended for caries prevention. Many sealant materials are available on the market. Compomers are hybrid dental materials that are modified composite resins with polyacids. The esthetic properties of traditional composite systems are combined with the fluoride-releasing and adhesive properties of glass ionomer cement (GIC). Organically modified ceramic (

A severely mentally retarded man displayed the following main symptoms: short stature, microcephaly, antimongoloid slant of palpebral fissures, big ears with hyperplastic helices, imperfect dental enamel, short and webbed neck, short arms, short hands, brachymetaphalangy, short second fingers, broad thumbs, short metatarsal bones, and unusually big first toes. It seems almost certain that the syndrome was caused by a chromosome deletion involving about half of 12p which was present in all of the lymphocytes examined.

In 1993, a cross-sectional oral health survey of 739 randomly selected seven- to 12-year-old Canadian school children was conducted in Forteau (Labrador), Roddickton (northern Newfoundland), and Flower's Cove (northern Newfoundland) to determine the prevalence of dental caries and fluorosis. Children in grades two through six (n = 838) were selected to participate in the survey, which achieved a response rate of 88.2 per cent. Caries prevalence was estimated using modified World Health Organization (WHO) criteria (non-cavitated carious pits and fissures were coded separately from cavitated car

BACKGROUND: Poor or inequitable access to oral health care is commonly reported in high-, middle- and low-income countries. Although the severity of these problems varies, a lack of supply of dentists and their uneven distribution are important factors. Delegating care to dental auxiliaries could ease this problem, extend services to where they are unavailable and liberate time for dentists to do more complex work. Before such an approach can be advocated, it is important to know the relative effectiveness of dental auxiliaries and dentists.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness, costs and

This article describes the relationship between the carious process and pulp-dentine complex reactions. Where the balance between the two is in favour of the carious process and where conventional cavity preparation leads to a direct pulp exposure, the direct pulp cap technique is described. The success of the technique is addressed and more importantly an alternative technique for caries removal, namely stepwise excavation, is described which may lead to a reduced risk of carious exposure and the need for the direct pulp cap technique.

The timing of the placement of first fillings because of caries on different permanent tooth surfaces was determined at three health centers in Finland. The 927 subjects analyzed were born either in 1970-71 o4 in 1980-81. Basically, two different types of filling placement site were identified: 1) fissures and pits and 2) proximal and smooth surfaces. In some fissures and pits a 'post-eruptive'--that is, fillings placed in the year of emergence--was observed. This step had decreased markedly in the cohort born in 1980-81. The curves plateaued (retardation phase) at 50-60% for the occlusal surf

BACKGROUND: In a previous study to examine the nature of etching on the walls of fissures, there was a consistent result of resistance to deep etching on parts of the walls and a zone of lesser etching on part of the walls as evidenced by the uptake of stain. The staining had been used to examine the nature of the etch pattern. The aims of this study were to define the nature of this etch resistant area.
METHODS: A sample of 55 teeth, both molars and premolars, were divided into three groups. In the first group the wetting of fissures by the etchant was examined; the second group tested for t

The incidence and types of dental trait anomalies found in individuals with cleft lip or cleft palate or both (cleft group), in siblings of the cleft group, and in a group of individuals without cleft lip or cleft palate (noncleft group) were compared. The cleft group had 1.02 anomalies per individual, the sibling group, 0.38; and the noncleft group, 0.17. The frequency of occurrence of thick-curved maxillary central incisors, incisal fissures, and missing teeth were significantly different among the three groups.
