One of the major problems associated with xerostomic patients is the poor tolerance and retention of removable dental prostheses because of thin dry atrophic mucosa and lack of a saliva film. The use of salivary substitutes can improve lubrication, provide irrigation for dry mucosa, provide significant relief from symptoms, and also improve the retention of removable prostheses. These substitutes can be delivered over prolonged periods by using saliva reservoirs in the prosthesis itself. This report describes a novel technique for the fabrication of a functional palatal saliva reservoir in ede

Telescopic crown attachments have been successfully used in completely and partially edentulous patients. This type of attachment provides retention, support, and stability with optimal hygiene for the removable dental prosthesis (RDP). With the emergence of CAD/CAM technology, telescopic crown attachments can be virtually designed and milled precisely to ensure a passive fit of the attachment parts and maximal functionality of the RDP. This article reviews both the clinical outcome and prosthodontic rehabilitation of telescopic crown attachments of an edentulous ectodermal dysplasia patient w

Residual ridge resorption is a rapid, progressive, irreversible, and inevitable process of bone resorption. Long-standing teeth and implants have been shown to have maintained the bone around them without resorption. Thus, overdenture therapy has been proven to be beneficial in situations where few remaining teeth are present. In addition to the various advantages seen with tooth-supported telescopic overdentures, a few shortcomings can also be expected, including unseating of the overdenture, increased bulk of the prosthesis, secondary caries, etc. The precise transfer of the secondary telesc

Prosthodontic rehabilitation can be accomplished with fixed, overdenture, complete, or implant-retained prostheses. Dental treatment overcomes the patient's functional, psychological, esthetic and phonation problems. Remaining healthy teeth may allow the dentist to fabricate a removable partial overdenture, fixed partial prosthesis or implant - supported prosthesis. The retention of a number of abutments helps maintain a positive ridge form with greater height and volume of the alveolar bone, improving masticatory performance, as well as providing a more stable prostheses. Dental patients who

In contemporary implant and prosthodontic practice, high levels of surgical and biologic success rates have been achieved. However, mechanical and technical complications continue to exist. Of these, one of the biggest challenges to the clinician is the conservative retrieval of fractured screw fragments from within the implants and/or abutments. While removal is desirable, the fragments cannot always be removed, and alternative solutions for the management of such clinical situations must be considered. This clinical report describes the replacement of 2 fractured, irretrievable, Locator abut

This 2-year study investigates the survival and crestal bone loss of immediately loaded implants used to support complete-arch implant-supported prostheses (ISPs) or tooth-implant-supported fixed prostheses (TISPs) in the maxilla. Six patients with 52 implants for the support of ISPs and seven patients with 22 implants and 24 abutment teeth for the support of TISPs were included. All implants were immediately loaded. The survival of the supporting implants and teeth was evaluated for up to 6 months after immediate loading. Bone loss around the implants was measured using panoramic radiographs.

OBJECTIVES: This narrative review summarizes the current evidence about the role that the fabrication and presence of dental prostheses and tooth-related factors have on the initiation and progression of gingivitis and periodontitis.
FINDINGS: Placement of restoration margins within the junctional epithelium and supracrestal connective tissue attachment can be associated with gingival inflammation and, potentially, recession. The presence of fixed prostheses finish lines within the gingival sulcus or the wearing of partial, removable dental prostheses does not cause gingivitis if patients are

It is generally assumed that passively fitting superstructures are a prerequisite for long-lasting implant success. In the study presented, the strain development of three-unit implant fixed partial dentures (FPDs) was evaluated at the bone surrounding the implant and on the superstructure using a strain gauge technique. Six groups of three-unit FPDs representing the commonly used techniques of bridge fabrication were investigated with 10 samples each, in order to quantify the influence of impression technique, mode of fabrication and retention mechanism on superstructure fit. Two ITI implants

Removable maxillary prostheses (n = 31) rigidly retained on either a one-piece anteriorly located milled bar fixed on four implants located in the anterior maxillary region (group 1, n = 15) or on two bilaterally placed milled bars fixed on six to eight implants located in the posterior maxillary region (group 2, n = 16) were evaluated for prosthodontic maintenance and the calculated bar-generated supporting area. Comparisons of the incidence of prosthodontic maintenance and the supporting area generated by the bars did not differ between groups. Evident advantages were noted for the anterior

Nocturnal bruxing is a parafunctional activity of the masticatory system that may create problems for removable dental prosthesis (RDP) users. Such problems may include root fractures, increased mobility of abutment teeth, excessive wear of resin denture teeth, minor connector bending, or denture base cracking. This clinical report presents an occlusal device fabricated for an RDP patient. The device used existing ERA attachments for added retention designed with the intended purpose of protecting the definitive fixed and RDP from damage due to nocturnal bruxing activity and providing for even
