A Finite Element Method Study on a Simulation of the Thermal Behaviour of Four Methods for the Restoration of Class II Cavities.

The possibility of dental pulp damage during dental procedures is well known. According to studies, during finishing and polishing without cooling, temperatures of up to 140 °C or more can be generated. There are many studies that have analysed the influence of the finishing and polishing of fillings on the mechanical parameters, but the analysis of thermal parameters has led to uncertain results due to the difficulty of performing this in vivo. Background: We set out to conduct a study, using the finite element method, to determine the extent to which the type of class II cavity and the volum

Effect of pulp vitality on periodontal reattachment following free autogenous gingival graft in dogs.

The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of pulp vitality on the periodontal reattachment following the free autogenous gingival graft. Maxillary bilateral premolars in each of 4 dogs were used. Denuded root surfaces were prepared after the labial alveolar osteotomies on the experimental region. 4 weeks later, the pulp in the right teeth was exstirpated and the root canals either were filled with gutta percha points and root canal sealer or were left open (infected teeth). The left teeth were kept in the vital pulp as a control. The graft was placed over the denuded root after 4

Histological analysis of rat dental pulp tissue capped with propolis.

The aim of the present study was to assess the response of rat dental pulp to direct pulp capping with propolis. Flavonoid and non-flavonoid materials were purified from an ethanol extract of propolis obtained from South Sulawesi, Indonesia. A Class I cavity was prepared on the occlusal surface of the right maxillary first molar in Sprague Dawley rats. The dental pulp was exposed and then capped with a zinc oxide-based filler as a control (group I), or with propolis flavonoids (group II) or non-flavonoids (group III). The animals were sacrificed at week 1, 2 or 4, biopsy samples were obtained,

[Direct capping of the artificial exposed pulp in teeth with deep caries].

We carried out clinical and histological investigations on teeth with superficial and deep caries in which we made an artificial exposure of the pulp to check the reactivity of the endodont. After one year we observed using clinical and x-ray methods successful treatment in 93.4% of the teeth. Histologically the number of successful treatment was 100.0% in teeth with superficial caries and 80.0% in teeth with deep caries.

Plasma-treated water eliminates Streptococcus mutans in infected dentin model.

Non-mechanical procedures for removing caries-infected dentin are warranted in dentistry. We previously demonstrated the marked sterilization effect for direct irradiation of low-temperature plasma using dentin model infected with Streptococcus mutans. However it requires 180 s of intraoral plasma irradiation to eliminate bacteria. We alternatively investigated whether plasma-treated water (PTW), i.e., pure water exposed to plasma in an atmosphere, has a same bactericidal activity with the plasma irradiation. In the infected dentin model, the viable S. mutans counts recovered by bur at depth o

Generalized pulp canal obliteration in a patient on long-term glucocorticoids: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: The calcification of the tooth pulp is a pathological condition that occurs in response to various factors. A uncommon haematological condition known as paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria (PNH) is characterized by bouts of haemolysis, and it requires long-term use of glucocorticoids (GCs). CASE PRESENTATION: A female patient who was diagnosed with PNH and had a history of long-term use of GCs came to our department for root canal therapy (RCT) for teeth 25, 26, and 27. The radiographs showed generalized pulp canal obliteration (PCO) in most of the patients. None of these teeth (

The Experimental Study of the Performance of Nano-Thin Polyelectrolyte Shell for Dental Pulp Stem Cells Immobilization.

Carious is the most frequent disease of mineralized dental tissues which might result in dental pulp inflammation and mortality. In such cases an endodontic treatment is the only option to prolong tooth functioning in the oral cavity; however, in the cases of severe pulpitis, especially when complicated with periodontal tissue inflammation, the endodontic treatment might not be enough to protect against tooth loss. Thus, keeping the dental pulp viable and/or possibility of the reconstruction of a viable dental pulp complex, appears to become a critical factor for carious and/or pulp inflammati

Clinical performance of two onlay designs for molars after root canal treatment.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical performance of two proposed onlay designs. METHODS: Molars with occlusal and/or mesial/distal defects after root canal treatment were classified by design into three groups. Onlays without shoulders were the control group (Group C, n = 50). The designed onlays were Group O (n = 50) and the designed mesio-occlusal/disto-occlusal onlays were Group MO/DO (n = 80). All onlays had an occlusal thickness of approximately 1.5-2.0 mm, and the designed onlays had a shoulder depth and width of approximately 1 mm. In Groups C and O, the box-shaped retention was 1.5 mm in

Preservation in Young Patients of Pulp Vitality and Anatomical-Functional Restoration of the Lost Structure.

Often, young patients (≤30 years old) present with carious lesions that progress acutely, compromising a large amount of tooth structure. In these cases, a treatment to prevent the occurrence of pulp exposure and promote remineralization of caries-affected dentin is necessary to maintain healthy dental structure and allow more conservative interventions. The approach will be different when pulp exposure occurs: The therapeutic treatments will be focused on reparative dentin formation and prevention of microorganisms penetrating the pulp organ. Due to the different possible treatments that can

Ingrowth of Mineralized Tissue into the Root Canal of Immature Permanent Teeth after a Traumatic Injury: A Report of 3 Cases.

The aim of this case series was to describe the endodontic management of 3 immature permanent teeth that sustained traumatic injuries and subsequently presented with complete ingrowth of mineralized tissue into the canal space. Ingrowth of bone/mineralized tissue into the canal has been considered a poor long-term outcome with an inherent risk of ankylosis. In cases 1 and 2, no endodontic treatment was undertaken, except for emergency management requiring splinting. The cases were followed for 36 and 23 months, respectively. No ankylosis was evident over the review period, and normal teeth eru

Contrast-enhanced micro-CT to assess dental pulp tissue debridement in root canals of extracted teeth: a series of cascading experiments towards method validation.

AIM: To validate a new method for the evaluation of pulp tissue debridement in the root canals of extracted teeth using an impregnation protocol involving potassium triiodide, a radiocontrast solution known as Lugol's, combined with micro-computed tomographic (micro-CT) imaging. METHODOLOGY: The impact of NaOCl on the radiopacity of Lugol's solution was assessed using a two-fold dilution series of Lugol in distilled water and 5.25% NaOCl, which were then pipetted into transparent dishes and radiographed. To verify the influence of Lugol on the proteolytic effect of NaOCl, a dissolution test w

[Clinical and bacteriological studies with metronidazol in endodontic therapy (author's transl)].

Metronidazol was employed in the endodontic treatment of 200 gangrenous teeth, with symptoms of acute and chronic periodontitis. In 50 cases aerobic and anaerobic microbiological cultivations have been performed. The number of the necessary treatments was less, symptoms of irritation in the periapical region could not be observed. The favourable clinical and microbiological results in the course of the Metronidazol treatment point to the role of the anaerobic microorganisms in connection with the inflammatory symptoms of the gangrenous pulp.

Medication of the dental pulp: a review and proposals.

For years, dentists have desired to treat the intact dental pulp. Since it is well-known that many substances, including some drugs, are capable of permeating dentin, we believe it is possible to treat certain types of pulpitis by applying drugs at the base of cavity preparations. Useful drugs include local anesthetics to block pain transmission, glucocorticoids or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIA) to treat inflammation, NSAIA or narcotic analgesics for pain control, and antibiotics to treat infection. The literature is reviewed and proposals are presented to study medication of t

Migration of leukocytes in dental pulp in response to plaque bacteria.

Cell material from three different dental plaque bacteria (Actinomyces viscosus, Streptococcus mitis, Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans) were studied for their capacity to induce leukocyte migration in the dental pulp of monkeys. Altogether five animals were used to provide 123 teeth for the study. The bacterial test materials were prepared from lyophilized sonicates of pure cultures of respective bacteria mixed with crystalline bovine serum albumin (BSA) 1:1 by weight. Immediately prior to use in the experiment saline was added to render the test material into a paste-like consistency. Buc

Allogeneic Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stromal Cell Transplantation Induces Dentin Pulp Complex-like Formation in Immature Teeth with Pulp Necrosis and Apical Periodontitis.

INTRODUCTION: Dental pulp regeneration is challenging in endodontics. Cellular therapy is an alternative approach to induce dental pulp regeneration. Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have the capacity to induce dental pulp-like tissue formation. In this study, we evaluated the capacity of allogeneic bone marrow MSCs (BM-MSCs) to regenerate pulp following necrosis and apical periodontitis in children's permanent immature apex teeth. METHODS: Patients aged 8 to 12 years with pulp necrosis and apical periodontitis were evaluated. The study included 15 teeth (13 incisors and 2 molars) from 14 pat

[Effect of remaining dentine thickness beneath deep cavities on the rate of reparative dentine formation--experimental study].

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of remaining dentine thickness beneath deep cavities on the rate of reparative dentine formation throughout 119 days and to establish the limit value of the remaining dentine thickness that enables greatest amount of tertiary dentine in dogs' teeth. Deep buccal cavities were prepared in all canines and molars of three dogs, lined with four different lining materials for indirect pulp capping and filled with silver amalgam. Tetracycline labelling technique was used to demark the layers of reparative dentine produced during the experimental per

[Evaluation of a new method of caries removal: in vivo study].

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to test Carisolv gel, a chemo-mechanical caries removal system, which is able to remove selectively dental caries. METHODS: Actual restorative procedures comprise drilling to remove caries as well as to make the cavity suitable for filling materials and the treatment is often associated with pain. In this way tooth structure removal is bigger, irritation of dental pulp may occur, and the tissue we eliminate is more than the real infected tissue. In order to exceed these disadvantages we carried out pulp capping (direct and indirect), followed in time by X

Primate pulpal response to ultraviolet light-polymerized direct-bonding material systems.

The results of this study, plus those of a previous study, show that a layer of CaOH lining the floor of the tooth cavity will protect the dental pulp against toxic irritants inherent to an UV light-polymerized cavity liner and a UV light-polymerized composite restorative resin. This study also showed that a layer of CaOH lining the floor of the cavity will protect the dental pulp against acid irritants inherent in the enamel etching solution. It is recommended to restorative dentistry that all primary dentin within clinically accessible areas of the cavity preparation be covered with a layer
