Analgesic and Neuroprotective Effects of Electroacupuncture in a Dental Pulp Injury Model-A Basic Research.

Irreversible pulpitis is an extremely painful condition and its consequence in the central nervous system (CNS) remains unclear. A mouse model of dental pulp injury (DPI) resembles the irreversible pulpitis profile in humans. This study sought to determine whether pain induced by DPI activates microglia and astrocytes in the trigeminal subnucleus caudalis (Vc), as well as increases levels of proinflammatory cytokines, and whether electroacupuncture (EA) can be a potential analgesic and neuroprotective therapy following DPI. Pain behavior was measured via head-withdrawal threshold (HWT) and bur

A Review of Research Studies on Sleep-Disordered Breathing in Children Relevant to Dental Professionals.

This article provides an overview of research available on sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in the pediatric patient. People with SDB have symptoms of primary snoring, mouth breathing, and interrupted breathing (hypopnea). Most SBD research has focused on adults, with less information available on children. Significant differences between these two patient groups exist in the identification of sleep issues, treatment modalities, and stability of treatment. Dental professionals are in a unique position to screen their pediatric patients, provide treatment options, and help ensure early treatmen

Diagnoses and Treatment of Dental Disorders in a Research Colony of Macaca fascicularis: A Case Series.

During daily routine oral examinations in a research colony of nonhuman primates (NHPs, Macaca fascicularis), a variety of oral-dental lesions were identified. A dental care program was established based on these findings. Based on the presence of dental clinical signs and their severity, 31 animals were triaged to be examined and treated by a veterinarian. Clinical examination consisted of visual inspection using a periodontal probe/explorer and full or partial mouth dental radiographs. Treatment was performed during the same procedure. Some animals had a follow-up examination including radio

A review of clinical research on the use of prenatal fluoride administration for prevention of dental caries.

From a theoretical standpoint, primary teeth could benefit from prenatal exposure to dietary fluoride supplements. Permanent teeth are unlikely to benefit from the procedure. Additional research on placental transfer of fluoride, and mechanisms of action of fluoride is indicated. Despite encouraging trends in existing data, administration of dietary fluoride supplements to pregnant women cannot be recommended at this time, because conclusive clinical evidence that the procedure reduces dental caries in the teeth of offspring is lacking. Well-controlled clinical trials should be carried out to

Clinical methods for determining dentifrice-cleaning ability. American Dental Association Health Foundation Research Institute.

This collaborative study of dentifrice-cleaning methodology and function was conducted to compare three dental stain-grading methods among 300 adults who brushed their teeth for 8 weeks with three specially formulated calcium phosphate dentifrices, which differed in dentin abrasivity. In general, with some difference in sensitivity, use of the three stain-grading methods distinguished among different groups of the population using these three dentifrices. By using the method with the greater level of magnification, a significant difference was detected earlier. The data indicate that there is

In ovo manipulation of Nile crocodile embryos: egg windowing and potential dental research applications.

Crocodilians exhibit continuous tooth replacement (i.e., polyphyodonty) and have been identified as suitable models for tooth regeneration research due to the similarity in dental cavity and tooth anatomy between these creatures and humans. Various studies reporting in ovo bird embryo manipulation exist, but such reports for reptiles are virtually non-existent. Egg windowing enables direct access to oviparous vertebrate embryos and is therefore an important component of in ovo embryo manipulation experiments. The aim of the present study was to window Nile crocodile, Crocodylus niloticus eggs

[Research Progress on Drug Intervention to Inhibit Dental Plaque Biofilm Formation by Streptococcus mutans Based on the Concept of Ecological Prevention of Dental Caries].

Dental caries is the local destruction of hard tooth tissue caused by acidic byproducts generated by cariogenic bacteria, primarily Streptococcus mutans, which ferment free sugars in the presence of host factors, dietary components, and environmental conditions. A main feature of dental caries is the formation of dental plaque biofilm, which significantly improves the resistance of bacteria to drugs and host immunity. Traditional anti-caries drugs mainly exert anti-biofilm functions indirectly through antibacterial activities. However, they tend to interfere with the symbiotic microbiota while

Extracted human teeth and their utility in dental research. Recommendations on proper preservation: A literature review.

Laboratory research in dentistry and dental education use extracted human teeth as a model for simulation for ex vivo procedures. Human-borne tissues are the first choice of material for bond strength assessment. To obtain comparable results in dental material tests and to ensure microbiological safety, specimens must be stored under specific, uniform conditions. The aim of this paper was to present the contemporary view and recommendations on preserving extracted human teeth. The antimicrobial properties of the storage medium are a crucial aspect, as extracted teeth pose a risk of cross-infec

Genes underlying familial hypodontia: a review and discussion of the role of dental hygienists in future research.

Congenitally missing teeth, or hypodontia, is one of the most common abnormalities of the human dentition and has a critical and often lifelong impact on the oral health of affected individuals. Here we review hypodontia and describe the patterns of inheritance it can display. A short review of tooth development and a primer in human genetics are presented. Approaches used to determine the underlying cause for various forms of hypodontia are discussed and information about genes discovered to date is reviewed. The role that the dental hygienists can play in facilitating the discovery of novel
