We studied the epidemiology of dental trauma in a teaching hospital and brought it closer to the induced insurance-related costs. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study, examining the files of declaration of dental trauma, from January 2005 to December 2008. The litigations for dental injuries treated by Quality and Services Department were als

Specialist practice for minor oral surgery: a comparative audit of third molar surgery.

Cost efficiency of removing third molars in a practice specialising in minor oral surgery was compared to that of a hospital oral surgery department. A total of 100 patients treated in each locality were prospectively audited during the financial year 1989-90. Surgical complexity, waiting time, complications and patient satisfaction were compared. The hospital cases were costed individually and compared to fees received for the patients treated in the practice. The practice fees were also compared to average expenses as assessed by the Dental Rates Study Group Inland Revenue Enquiry. Patients

Halving the cost of anaesthetic agents.

A survey in South Wales has been used to estimate the annual cost of individual anaesthetic drugs used in the National Health Service. Halothane, costing pound900,000, is the most expensive item, followed by oxygen ( pound390,000) and nitrous oxide ( pound350,000). The total cost of drugs used for hospital anaesthetics is estimated to be pound2,300,000, and for dental anaesthetics pound156,000. The drug cost of the average hospital anaesthetic is pound1 3s. and of the average dental anaesthetic 1s. 9d.The provision of liquid oxygen stores could reduce oxygen costs by up to 90%, and the greater

AAA: a rock and a hard place.

Introduction This retrospective analysis sought to ascertain the effect of the advice, analgesia and antibiotics (AAA) regimen upon the appropriateness of antibiotic prescribing for those patients attending for emergency dental extraction at the Department of Oral Surgery, King's College Dental Hospital (KCDH), London. This has subsequently been used as a foundation upon which to discuss the potential factors that are likely to have had an effect upon the prescribing patterns of general dental practitioners (GDPs) throughout the United Kingdom (UK) at this time and possible future implications

What is the impact of the UK soft drinks industry levy on childhood tooth decay?

DESIGN: Interrupted time series analysis. DATA ANALYSIS: An interrupted time series (ITS) analysis was conducted to determine if there was an association between the announcement and implementation of the soft drinks industry levy (SDIL) and rates of hospital admission for tooth extractions due to dental caries in children. Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) were used on hospital admissions for tooth extraction of one or more primary or permanent tooth due to a primary diagnosis of dental caries in children aged 0-18 years attending a National Health Service (NHS) hospital in England from Janu

Clinical Profile and Dental Treatment Needs of Children with Special Healthcare Needs Undergoing General Anaesthesia: A Retrospective Study.

Background/Objectives: Children with special healthcare needs (CSHCN) face significant barriers to conventional dental care and frequently require general anaesthesia (GA). Data characterising the clinical and therapeutic profile of this population in the Spanish public health system remain scarce. This study aimed to describe the systemic conditions, oral pathology, and dental procedures performed in CSHCN attending a tertiary-care paediatric oral and maxillofacial surgery service, and to characterise the subgroup of patients requiring treatment under GA relative to the wider clinic populatio

Child oral health and preventive dental service access among children with intellectual disabilities, autism and other educational additional support needs: A population-based record linkage cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Inequalities in child oral health are a global challenge and the intersection of socioeconomic factors with educational additional support needs (ASN), including children with intellectual disabilities or autism, have thus far received limited attention in relatively small clinical studies. We aimed to address this evidence gap by investigating oral health and access to preventive dental services among children with ASN compared to the general child population. METHODS: Cohort study linking data from six Scotland-wide health and education databases compared: dental caries experienc
