Dentinogenesis imperfecta associated with osteogenesis imperfecta: report of two cases.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a heritable systemic disorder of the connective tissue. Dentinogenesis imperfecta (DI), which is sometimes an accompanying symptom of OI, belongs to a group of genetically conditioned dentin dysplasias and is characterized clinically by an opalescent amber appearance of the dentin. Although the teeth of DI cases wear more easily and excessively compared to normal teeth, they do not appear to be more susceptible to dental caries than normal teeth. Two cases of DI associated with OI are presented in this paper, with 1 case suffering from nursing bottle caries. The

Cleidocranial dysplasia: clinico-radiological illustration of a rare case.

Cleidocranial dysplasia is an autosomal dominant condition caused by mutation of RUNX2, characterized by generalized dysplasia of the bones and teeth. Affected individuals have short stature, atypical facial features, and skeletal anomalies affecting mainly the skull and clavicle. The dental manifestations are mainly delayed exfoliation of the primary teeth and delayed eruption of the permanent teeth, with multiple impacted supernumeraries, and absence of cellular cementum. The frequency of this disorder is 1 per million individuals. Here we report a rare case of CCD in a 9-year-old male patie

A Review of Selected Dental Anomalies With Histologic Features in the Pediatric Patient.

Unique dental conditions in children include odontogenic cysts and tumors, hereditary dental diseases, developmental anomalies, and lesions associated with the eruption of the primary or permanent teeth. Many of these conditions have long lasting effects on the adult dentition in terms of affecting esthetics, function, and overall quality of life. Inherited dental syndromes affect the dental hard tissues specifically the enamel, dentin, and/or cementum in a generalized manner, involving both primary and permanent teeth. These conditions manifest in altered quality or quantity of the hard tissu

Dentine matrix protein 1 (DMP-1) is a marker of bone-forming tumours.

Dentin matrix protein 1 (DMP-1) is highly expressed by osteocytes and is a non-collagenous matrix protein found in dentin and bone. In this study, we determined the expression of DMP-1 in mature and immature human bone and examined whether DMP-1 is useful in distinguishing osteoid/bone-forming tumours from other primary and secondary bone tumours. DMP-1 expression was immunohistochemically determined in paraffin sections of a wide range of benign and malignant primary bone tumours and tumour-like lesions (n = 353). DMP-1 mRNA expression was also examined in osteosarcoma and fibrosarcoma cell l

Morphological, histological, and chemical analysis of first permanent molars with molar incisor malformation.

PURPOSE: Molar incisor malformation (MIM) is a dental anomaly rendering first permanent molar pulps inflamed/necrotic at a young age. It often affects permanent incisors, primary second molars and less frequently other teeth. The purpose of this study was to investigate the anatomy and histology of MIM in seeking insight into its pathogenesis. METHODS: Five MIM first permanent molars were examined with micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) for 3D morphology, with scanning electron microscopy for microanatomy, with energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS) for chemical composition and for hist

The genetic basis of inherited anomalies of the teeth. Part 1: clinical and molecular aspects of non-syndromic dental disorders.

The genetic control of dental development represents a complex series of events, which can very schematically be divided in two pathways: specification of type, size and position of each dental organ, and specific processes for the formation of enamel and dentin. Several genes linked with early tooth positioning and development, belong to signalling pathways and have morphogenesis regulatory functions in morphogenesis of other organs where they are associated with the signalling pathways. Their mutations often show pleïotropic effects beyond dental morphogenesis resulting in syndromic developm

Progressive Pre-Eruptive Coronal Resorption Associated With Enamel Degeneration: A Case Series.

The purpose of this article is to present three cases of a rare phenomenon called pre-eruptive coronal resorption (PCR), which occurs in teeth with enamel degeneration. In the first case, the enamel defects occurred due to ectodermal dysplasia, which represents the first documented case of a patient with ectodermal dysplasia who underwent PCR. In the other two cases, the enamel defects occurred due to amelogenesis imperfecta. PCR typically develops asymptomatically; therefore, it is usually incidentally identified through radiological findings, as it presents diffuse degeneration originating e

Multiple developmental dental anomalies and hypermobility type Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

Concurrent existence of multiple developmental dental anomalies: hypodontia of permanent mandibular incisors, dentin dysplasia, transmigration, root dilaceration, ectopic eruption and delayed eruption combined with systemic abnormalities including joint hyperlaxity and skin hyperextensibility aided in diagnosis of a sporadic case of hypermobility type of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome in a Jordanian Arab male. In dental practice the presence of multiple developmental dental anomalies expressing simultaneous defects in different stages of tooth development should raise suspicion of possible of manifest

Abnormal immune response to infection of the dental pulp. Report of a case.

The following case illustrates an unusual response by the dental pulp to caries in an immunodeficient patient. The patient, a 14-year-old boy, suffered from thymic dysplasia and IgA deficiency. Deep dentinal caries produced relatively little destruction of the pulp and only a mild inflammatory response, in spite of the presence of a large number of bacteria in the pulp chamber. The patient's immunologic disorder was diagnosed as hereditary combined immunodeficiency of unknown type. However, it may have been a variant of Nezelof's syndrome.

Segmental odontomaxillary dysplasia: report of a case emphasizing histopathological, immunohistochemical and scanning electron microscopic features.

Segmental odontomaxillary dysplasia (SOD) is a rare developmental disorder of the maxilla, and there is little information on its morphological features. Thus, the present article describes a case of SOD focusing on its histopathological, immunohistochemical and scanning electron microscopic features. Several dental abnormalities were present, including numerous dentin and pulp defects, altered composition of hard tissue, and proliferation of myofibroblasts in the pulp and the soft tissue surrounding affected teeth. This myofibroblastic proliferation was identified for the first time in SOD an

Dentinogenesis Imperfecta : A Family which was Affected for Over Three Generations.

Dentinogenesis Imperfecta (DI) or hereditary opalescent dentin is inherited in a simple autosomal dominant mode with high penetrance and low mutation rates. It generally affects both the deciduous and the permanent dentitions. DI corresponds to a localized form of mesodermal dysplasia which is observed in the histo-differentiation. An early diagnosis and treatment are therefore fundamental, which aim at obtaining a favourable prognosis, since at late intervention makes the treatment more complex. We are presenting here a case of DI in which the disease affected the three generations of a famil

Diagnosis and management of unusual dental abscesses in children.

Although the majority of dental abscesses in children originate from dental caries or trauma, a few are associated with unusual conditions which challenge diagnosis and management. Recent research findings have shed light on these unusual entities and greatly improved understanding of their clinical implications. These conditions include developmental abnormalities such as dens invaginatus in which there is an invagination of dental tissues into the pulp chamber and dens evaginatus in which a tubercle containing pulp is found on the external surface of a tooth crown. In addition, inherited con
