Constructing the Enamel-Like Dentin Adhesion Interface to Achieve Durable Resin-Dentin Adhesion.

Enamel adhesion is acknowledged as durable; however, achieving long-lasting dentin adhesion remains a formidable challenge due to degradation of exposed collagen matrix after acid-etching of dentin. The idea of developing an enamel-like adhesion interface holds great promise in achieving enduring dentin adhesion. In this study, we constructed an enamel-like adhesion interface using a rapid remineralization strategy comprising an acidic primer and a rapid remineralization medium. Specifically, the acidic primer of 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP) and epigallocatechin-3-gallate

A histological study of the short-term effects of fluoride on enamel and dentine formation in hamster tooth-germs in organ culture in vitro.

First maxillary molars in early stages of secretory amelogenesis were exposed in vitro to fluoride (F-) concentrations ranging between 2.63 microM and 2.63 mM for up to 3 days. In contrast to the dentine papilla, which seemed unaffected by F- in concentrations up to 1.31 mM, the enamel organ was dose-dependently extremely sensitive for F-. Young ameloblasts which became secretory in vitro were in particular sensitive and did not secrete enamel adjacent to new, in vitro-formed dentine. Hypermineralization of the dentine at the enamel-dentine junction suggested that these ameloblasts still trans

Dentine hypersensitivity: effect of interactions between metal salts, fluoride and chlorhexidine on the uptake by dentine.

A large number of compounds may be applied to the teeth for preventive or therapeutic purposes, most notably in dentine hypersensitivity. The uptake of any one compound by tooth substances may clearly be affected by another to produce synergistic, additive or antagonistic effects. This study determined whether uptake interactions occurred between fluoride, chlorhexidine, strontium, tin and zinc. All compounds, in particular tin, showed considerable affinity for dentine. Fluoride reduced the uptake of zinc but not tin, strontium or chlorhexidine. Chlorhexidine increased the uptake of zinc, but

Responses of intradental nerve fibres to stimulation of dentine and pulp.

In the present work responses of intradental nerve fibres to stimuli that induce fluid flow in dentinal tubules as well as to direct mechanical irritation of the exposed pulp were studied on 9 young adult beagle dogs. Under pentobarbitone anesthesia 31 single functional intradental fibre units were dissected from the mandibular nerve. Stimuli were applied to the lower left canine tooth. Exposed dentine surface was irritated by scraping, air blasts and dry absorbent paper and the pulp mechanically with a von Frey hair. Ten fibre units responded to stimulation of dentine. Six of them were also t

Evaluation of a new dentifrice for the treatment of sensitive teeth.

A dentifrice containing 5% potassium nitrate, 1.3% soluble pyrophosphate, 1.5% polyvinylmethyl ether and maleic acid (PVM/MA) copolymer and 0.243% sodium fluoride in a silica base (Sensitive/Tartar Control) has been developed to concomitantly control tartar, caries and dentinal hypersensitivity. In vitro and animal studies show that the fluoride in this product effectively inhibits formation of enamel and dentine caries. In vitro studies also demonstrate that this dentifrice effectively reduces hydraulic conductance by occluding dentine tubules with a mixed surface deposit of copolymer and sil

The Stability of Dentin Surface Biobarrier Consisting of Mesoporous Delivery System on Dentinal Tubule Occlusion and Streptococcus Mutans Biofilm Inhibition.

BACKGROUND: The dentin exposure always leads to dentin hypersensitivity and/or caries. Given the dentin's tubular structure and low mineralization degree, reestablishing an effective biobarrier to stably protect dentin remains significantly challenging. This study reports a versatile dentin surface biobarrier consisting of a mesoporous silica-based epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG)/nanohydroxyapatite delivery system and evaluates its stability on the dentinal tubule occlusion and the Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) biofilm inhibition. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The mesoporous delivery system was

Effect of hydroxyapatite film formed by powder jet deposition on dentin permeability.

A powder jet deposition (PJD) process can be used to create a thick hydroxyapatite (HA) film on the surface of a human tooth. This study aimed to investigate in vitro the ability of an HA film, applied using PJD, to diminish dentin permeability. Discs of human coronal dentin were cut perpendicular to the tooth axis and the smear layer was removed by EDTA treatment. The HA film was created by accelerating HA particles, calcinated at 1200°C, onto the dentin discs at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The surfaces and cross-sections of the HA PJD-treated samples were observed using scanni

Effects of mussel-inspired compounds on dentin bonding: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Resin-based materials used in the treatment of dental caries face insufficient bonding durability at the dentin interface. Mussel-inspired compounds, as a novel class of bio-inspired materials, offer promising potential for enhancing dentin bonding performance. This meta-analysis assessed the efficacy of monomeric and polymeric mussel-inspired compounds on resin-dentin bond strength and/or anti-enzymatic effects. METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42025649875). Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic search covered PubMed, Web of Sci

Comparison of efficacy of three commercially available dentifrices [corrected] on dentinal hypersensitivity: a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Dentinal hypersensitivity has been defined as a short, sharp pain arising from exposed dentine as a result of various stimuli such as heat, cold, chemical, or osmotic, that cannot be ascribed to any other pathology. This study was conducted to assess the efficacy of three commercially available toothpastes in the reduction of dentinal hypersensitivity. METHODS: A total of 149 subjects (72 males and 77 females; aged 20 to 60 years) were entered into the study and randomly divided into four groups: Group 1 - toothpaste containing 5% potassium nitrate; Group 2 - toothpaste containing

Dentin hypersensitivity and its management.

Dentin hypersensitivity is a common patient complaint that is more prevalent than the profession realizes. It is important for dentists to diagnose dentin hypersensitivity by exclusion and provide appropriate treatment recommendations for patients. Various treatment methods have been proposed but no universally accepted desensitizing agent or treatment has been identified. When a patient has symptoms that can be attributed to dentin hypersensitivity, a thorough clinical examination should be carried out to rule out other likely causes prior to diagnosis and treatment. Depending on the identifi

A novel dentin bonding scheme based on extrafibrillar demineralization combined with covalent adhesion using a dry-bonding technique.

Dentin bonding is a dynamic process that involves the penetration of adhesive resin monomers into the extrafibrillar and intrafibrillar demineralized collagen matrix using a wet-bonding technique. However, adhesive resin monomers lack the capacity to infiltrate the intrafibrillar space, and the excess water that is introduced by the wet-bonding technique remains at the bonding interface. This imperfectly bonded interface is inclined to hydrolytic degradation, severely jeopardizing the longevity of bonded clinical restorations. The present study introduces a dentin bonding scheme based on a dry
