The preschool years extend from birth up to the age of 4 years and represent the time of most rapid growth and development. During this period the child progresses from the edentulous state to having a fully erupted and functional primary dentition. Also during the preschool years important stages in development of underlying permanent teeth occur. Good management of the preschool child is an excellent practice builder: it leads to a motivated patient, happy to undergo any treatment necessary, and encourages confidence and improves the attitudes to oral health of other members of the family.

PURPOSE: Subcutaneous emphysema arises when air is forced beneath the tissue, leading to swelling, crepitus on palpation, and potential to spread along the fascial planes. The goal of this literature review is to alert the oral and maxillofacial surgeon to the inciting factors, diagnosis, and management of subcutaneous emphysema.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A comprehensive search of the medical and dental literature from 1993 to 2008 was performed using PubMed, and yielded 32 case reports of subcutaneous emphysema. Only cases associated with dental or surgical procedures were included. Cases of tra

In six commercial pig farms, we compared the effects of two methods of tooth resection (tooth clipping with pliers and tooth grinding with a rotating grindstone) on teeth themselves, on skin lesions of piglets and of sow udders as well as on litter growth and survival. An intact group was included for control. Treatments were balanced within herds with sows assigned to one of the three experimental treatments. Observations were from 107 sows and their litters (n = 35 or 36 litters/group) at farrowing (day 0) and approximately 8, 15 and 27 days later. Tooth resection was done within 24 h of bir

Understanding that dental carious lesions occur as a result of the action of micro-organisms in the dental plaque biofilm, where demineralisation on the tooth surface is the first sign of the disease, such incipient lesions can be treated using preventive, non-operative and minimally invasive operative dentistry. If the caries process is left unmanaged, the lesions progress towards cavitation, leading to more invasive treatments. This article discusses the principles of preventive, non-invasive and micro-invasive treatments of early carious lesions, outlining the clinical situations where thes

OBJECTIVES: Assess the unique clinical and radiological sequelae following oro-antral communications/fistulae (OAC/OAF) due to implant dentistry vs other etiologies.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A structured form served to collect data from medical records. All consecutive patients who underwent surgical closure of OACs/OAFs between 2003 and 2020, at a single center were included. Demographic, radiological, clinical, operative and postoperative characteristics were collected. The differences between groups (cases with implant dentistry etiology [IDE] vs cases with other etiologies) were assessed st

Deep caries and extremely deep caries are among the most common and challenging clinical conditions in operative dentistry and endodontics. In 2026, the European Federation of Conservative Dentistry(EFCD), the European Society of Endodontology (ESE)and the Organization for Caries Research (ORCA)jointly published the "Deep caries management: EFCD-ESE-ORCA S3-level clinical practice guideline". Based on systematic reviews, grading of recommendations assessment, development and evaluation (GRADE) assessment and structured expert consensus, this guideline provided evidence-informed recommendations

The use of high-power diode laser technology follows the principles of minimally invasive dentistry. Laser technology is used frequently in pediatric dentistry, especially in surgical procedures, because this approach favors hemostasis, eliminates the use of sutures, improves healing, minimizes treatment time, reduces the sensation of pressure and vibration experienced by the patient, and creates more comfortable postoperative conditions. This article describes the use of high-power diode lasers to perform 3 minor oral surgical procedures--biopsy, lingual frenectomy, and operculectomy--in 2 ch

Patients are increasingly wishing to undergo conventional endodontic treatment rather than to risk the loss of a tooth. Endodontic treatment in teeth that have been previously restored with extensive intracoronal or extracoronal restorations are often difficult to treat. The orientation of the root canals to the crown of the tooth may be lost, and this may often be compounded by the deposition of reparative dentin in the pulp chamber. The operating microscope allows better visualization of the working field, ensuring that the anatomy of the tooth is more readily inspected. This greatly enhance

Invasive dental procedures can be performed only with local anesthesia; in some cases, it may be useful to combine the administration of drugs to obtain anxiolysis with local anesthesia. Sedation required level should be individually adjusted to achieve a proper balance between the needs of the patient, the operator, and the safety of the procedure. Surgical time is an important factor for post-operative phases, and this could be greatly increased by whether the patient interrupts the surgeon or if it is not collaborative. In this manuscript some dentistry-used methods to practice conscious se

This paper - the first of two - explores the development of dentistry and dental care practices across diverse ancient civilisations. Evidence from prehistory, from a 13,000-year-old intervention at Riparo Fredian in northern Italy, to Neolithic findings in Pakistan and Slovenia, suggests that early populations attempted to alleviate pain and manage oral conditions. In Mesopotamia, cuneiform texts detail treatments for caries and periodontal disease, accompanied by recommendations and prescriptions for oral hygiene. Although these texts describe various therapeutic approaches, there is no ment

OBJECTIVES: Tuberculosis transmission among healthcare workers (HCWs) and patients is due to the level of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MT) circulation in the community and in the healthcare settings where HCWs are active. In contrast, most papers about dentistry report that dental HCWs (DHCWs) and patients are at relatively high risk, mainly based on tuberculosis case series that occurred in the 80's-90's. This meta-narrative review was designed to evaluate the tuberculosis risk in dentistry accounting for the historical-geographical contexts.

Corticosteroids are crucial in dentistry for their anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties, aiding in managing conditions such as oral lichen planus, recurrent aphthous stomatitis, and post-operative inflammation. By inhibiting pro-inflammatory mediators and immune cell activity, they offer significant symptomatic relief and promote healing. However, potential systemic and local side effects necessitate cautious application. This article explores the use of corticosteroids in routine dental practice.

Before the emergence of biomedical engineering, organ transplantation was considered the ideal treatment option for survival. Still, with the advent of bioactive materials, regenerative medicine was revolutionized by utilising the basic knowledge of repairing soft and hard tissues. Bioactive glass fibres possess a large surface area and provide efficient cellular attachment, while micro-spherical beads can be used as a potent drug delivery and protein vehicle. According to the composition, they are categorised as silicate, phosphate, and borate bioglasses. Their mechanism begins while in conta

OBJECTIVES: The advent of artificial intelligence (AI) and large language model (LLM)-based AI applications (LLMAs) has tremendous implications for our society. This study analyzed the performance of LLMAs on solving restorative dentistry and endodontics (RDE) student assessment questions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 151 questions from a RDE question pool were prepared for prompting using LLMAs from OpenAI (ChatGPT-3.5,-4.0 and -4.0o) and Google (Gemini 1.0). Multiple-choice questions were sorted into four question subcategories, entered into LLMAs and answers recorded for analysis. P-value and ch

A variety of advanced surgical techniques are available today for the treatment of soft-tissue complications in the restorative patient. Gingival recession and lack of attached gingiva can complicate delicate esthetic and prosthetic treatment. The restorative office must be able to critically evaluate the demands of the case and offer the patient options for correction of these advanced conditions. The ability to counsel in an informed way-outside the restorative arena-allows dentists to demonstrate their true commitment to the best outcome for the person they are dedicated to serve, the patie
