Those who actively work with children are, with increasing frequency, encountering patients who have been diagnosed with autistic disorders. Often, dentists may be the first healthcare providers to recognize that a 1- or 2-year-old child has some type of extraordinary pervasive behavioral disorder that a parent, fearing the worst, may have suspected instinctively and emotionally but never faced objectively. Currently, there are no empirical biological tests (eg, blood tests or brain scans) for ASD that are reliable. The definitive diagnosis of ASD is usually made by pediatricians, psychologist

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic disease with far-reaching systemic implications. The hallmark feature in SLE is chronic inflammation. It can affect the skin, joints, kidneys, lungs, nervous system, serous membranes such as the pleura and pericardium, mucous membranes and other organs of the body. It is imperative that the dental practitioner be familiar with the broad range of systemic and oral implications, including the clinical and biochemical features of SLE. This review article offers an overview of the multiple organ systems affected by this complex heterogeneous disease

BACKGROUND: Dentists frequently encounter adult patients who have facial rosacea. This common dermatologic condition can undermine a patient's appearance. Although rosacea can be progressive, the condition responds well to treatment, especially when started early.
RESULTS: This article will help dentists recognize rosacea and differentiate it from other dermatologic disorders. Clinicians then will be able to refer patients suspected of having rosacea to the appropriate medical specialist for confirmation of the diagnosis and treatment.
CONCLUSION: Dentists can provide a service to patients t

Canavan disease (CD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that occurs predominantly but not exclusively in Ashkenazi Jews. It is characterized by a normal birth, rapidly followed by signs of lack of interest, hypotonia, and megalencephaly, resulting in early death. Genetic studies suggest that among Ashkenazi Jews the carrier frequency is between 1/35 and 1/59. Dentists aware of CD can assist in the treatment of infants and children afflicted with this disorder. Early dental treatment may support parents and siblings in caring for the child with CD and help create good family dynamics.

To test whether a patient's age plays a role in dentists' treatment planning decisions, a convenience sample of 159 general dentists attending a state dental society annual meeting was presented a vignette including intra-oral photographs, a brief case history and clinical diagnosis of a patient. The patient was partially dentate, and was described as having irreversible pulpitis of tooth #19. Three versions of the vignette were developed, with identical materials and information except for the patient's age (either 44, 65, or 84 years), and were randomly assigned to the participating dentists

Our sample of 376 dentists in general practice provided a number of useful insights into the problems that dentists experience with their patients. For general problems of patient cooperation, the frequency of occurrence and annoyance to the dentist were related. High on the list in both categories were maintaining poor oral hygiene, missing or being late for appointments, and not paying bills. Not providing an accurate history ranked first in bother to the dentist but appears to occur infrequently. When specific chair problems were considered, an inverse relationship was found between frequen

UNLABELLED: Artificial intelligence (AI) is an emerging tool in modern medicine and the digital world. AI can help dentists diagnose oral diseases, design treatment plans, monitor patient progress and automate administrative tasks. The aim of this study is to evaluate the perception and attitude on use of artificial intelligence in dentistry for diagnosis and treatment planning among dentists and non-dentists' population of south Tamil Nadu region in India.

Dentists' perceptions and management of the pain experienced by children during treatment were examined in surveys of 198 American and 230 Finnish dentists. Two pain management areas were studied: communication and the use of anaesthetics and sedation. Neither group of dentists routinely questioned children about pain, but encouraging the child to report pain during treatment was more common; the USA dentists asked about pain more often than the Finnish dentists, whereas the Finnish dentists more often encouraged children to report pain. Finnish dentists were much less likely to use local anae

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to determine whether visiting only a pediatric dentist (as opposed to visiting only a general dentist) was associated with the provision of preventive dental services for a U.S.-based pediatric population (those 18 years and younger). Methods: This study analyzed pooled Medical Expenditure Panel Survey data from 2018 and 2019 to compare the use of certain preventive dental services (i.e., examination, radiographs, prophylaxis, dental sealant, and fluoride treatment) among those who reported visiting a pediatric dentist versus those who visited a general de

The Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a group of genetic connective tissue disorder due to abnormal collagen synthesis. EDS is characterized by the triad: joint hypermobility - skin hyperextensibility - connective tissue friability leading to vascular and skin fragility. Thirteen forms exist including three main ones: the hypermobile, classical and vascular forms. Given the diversity of clinical manifestations, the diagnosis of EDS is difficult. The management of this syndrome is multidisciplinary and includes the dental surgeon, because EDS can have many oral and dental manifestations. This syn

Oral cancer is one of the ten cancers with the worst prognosis. Higher mortality rate is due to the fact that the majority of cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage. Early stage of the disease causes no discomfort and symptoms start to present in later stages. Oral cancer can be detected in its earliest stage by simple examination of oral mucosa. Oral mucosa can be easily examined during routine dental examination. The examination itself is noninvasive, takes no more than one minute, does not require any special equipment, and poses no discomfort to the patient. Apart from better knowledge a

The practice of dentistry involves laborious high finesse dental preparations, precision and control in executions that require a particular attention, concentration and patience of the dentist and finally the dentist's physical and mental resistance. The optimal therapeutic approach and the success of practice involve special working conditions for the dentist and his team in an ergonomic environment. The meaning of the posture in ergonomics is the manner in which different parts of the body are located and thus the reports are established between them in order to allow a special task executi

Because of the intimate relationship between the upper dentition and the maxillary sinus, it is no surprise that inflammatory, cystic and neoplastic odontogenic diseases may extend into the maxillary sinus and, occasionally, into the nasal cavity. On the other hand, diseases of the maxillary sinus may extend into the oral cavity or may cause symptoms that mimic those of diseases of odontogenic origin. An overview is presented of the various odontogenic and nonodontogenic diseases that may involve the maxillary sinus.

The information was compiled, scored and analyzed in consultation with dentists using WHO guidelines.
RESULTS: Males numbered 801 (44%) and females 1019 (56%). Most of the patients were aged

Both the anatomy and physiology parts of national boards have questions on neuroscience. Currently, there are course guidelines established for dental neuroanatomy but not for dental neuroscience. As a result, there is great variability in what and how neurosciences are taught to dental students. At first glance, it is difficult to determine where neurosciences fit in the dental curriculum. One area where there is a close tie between basic science and clinical care is the realm of pain control. Since the Institute of Medicine study recommended that basic and clinical sciences curricula provide
