[Severe hypodontia in permanent dentition. Orthodontic treatment of oligodontia in children].

Our study is aimed to focus on severe hypodontia, the absence of multiple teeth in permanent dentition. Examining the variation of the number of teeth agenesis of permanent teeth is relatively common but real oligodontia is rarely encountered during our daily work. At a number of patients recently attending the Pedodontics and Orthodontics Department of the Dental Faculty of Semmelweis University oligodontia, the absence of at least six or more permanent teeth was found. Examining the aetiology of oligodontia it can be determined that both endogen and exogenous environmental factors may contri

Prevalence of numeric anomalies in the permanent dentition of patients with Down syndrome.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of numeric anomalies in the permanent dentition of patients with Down syndrome by means of panoramic radiographs. The sample consisted of panoramic radiographs from 70 subjects. We examined the radiographs to detect hypodontia as well as supernumerary teeth. Our results confirm the high prevalence of hypodontia among patients with Down syndrome (60%), mostly with mild expression. The teeth most often missing were the upper lateral incisors, usually bilaterally, followed by the lower second premolars and upper second premolars. Supernumer

Developmental disturbances of permanent teeth following trauma to the primary dentition.

The topographic relationship of the apices of the primary teeth to the permanent tooth germs explains the potential for possible developmental disturbances of the permanent teeth after injuries to their predecessors. The anatomical, histologic and clinical aspects of permanent tooth malformation following trauma to the primary teeth are described. One hundred and fourteen children with originally 255 traumatized primary teeth have been re-examined (with an average period of 5.1 years after the trauma) to assess any developmental disturbances of the corresponding permanent teeth. Twenty-three p

Hypodontia in the permanent dentition: a study of its prevalence in Malaysian children.

An investigation of the prevalence and distribution of hypodontia was carried out in Malaysian children between the ages of five to fifteen years. Hypodontia occurred in 2.8 per cent of these children. A greater number of females were found to have hypodontia, the ratio of affected females to males is 1.6:1. The teeth most frequently missing were the maxillary lateral incisors followed by the mandibular lateral incisors, then the mandibular second premolars. The aetiology of the condition is discussed. It is noteworthy that studies showing the lower second premolars to be most commonly missing

Development of deciduous and permanent dentition in Tarsius and its phylogenetic significance.

The earliest stages of development and differentiation of deciduous and permanent teeth were studied in prenatal and perinatal tarsiers. Both deciduous and successional teeth develop at loci for I1, I2, C, P2-4. Relationships among the dental lamina, enamel organs, and successional lamina were used to determine tooth homologies. During the second half of prenatal life, dP2 and dI2 undergo abnormal development. Their dentin becomes fragmented, and these teeth are shed or resorbed without eruption during the perinatal period. Our study provides evidence of an intermediate phase in evolutionary t

Developmental malformation of primary and permanent dentition: a rare sequel of trauma.

Dentofacial injuries that occur prior to the eruption of primary teeth can result in developmental disturbances not only in the primary but also in permanent dentition. Here we report a rare case of long term sequelae of trauma in a female child of 4 to 5 months of age which resulted in dilaceration and impaction of maxillary primary central incisors and subsequent enamel hypoplasia of the permanent maxillary central incisors.

Eruption of teeth in the nose following trauma to the primary and permanent dentitions.

Oro-facial trauma is common and forms a large component of any maxillofacial service workload. Even minor trauma can result in significant oro-facial and dental injury. This report reinforces the importance of a careful dental history and thorough examination, particularly when teeth remain missing after initial inspection. Other anatomical sites should be considered to ensure they do not contain traumatically displaced teeth. These two case reports show the late presentation of incisor teeth in the nasal cavity following dentoalveolar trauma.

Dental abnormalities in permanent dentition in children with submucous cleft palate.

Seventy-three children with submucous cleft palate (38 girls and 35 boys), mean age 8.2 years (range 7.7-9.5), were studied retrospectively from orthopantomograms. Dental abnormalities in permanent dentition were found in 26 patients (36%). Missing teeth, mainly lower 2nd premolars, upper lateral incisors, and upper 2nd premolars, were found in 12 patients (16%). Most of the patients had 1 or 2 missing teeth, 2 had 3 missing teeth. In 5 patients hypodontia was associated with another dental abnormality. Other dental abnormalities included peg-shaped lateral incisors in 7 patients (10%), ectopi
