PURPOSE: To examine the performance of CAD/CAM all-ceramic resin-bonded bridges (RBBs) fabricated from a glass ceramic material, and determine the influence of two different preparation designs on the fracture strength of these prostheses.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty human central incisors were used, placed into two groups. A clinical situation where a lateral incisor was missing was simulated. A minimal preparation design (palatal veneer preparation) and one that extended into the proximal area were applied in each group. The Cerec InEos and the Cerec 3D software were used to scan, design,

PURPOSE: The aim of this article is to describe the oral habilitation, over a period of 20 years, of a young patient with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia and agenesis of 15 permanent teeth.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Different clinical interventions were adapted to suit the patient's dental and psychologic stage of development. The prosthodontic treatment, which took place at different ages, comprised several treatment modalities: composite-retained onlay fixed partial dentures, a removable partial denture, tooth-supported and implant-supported fixed partial dentures, and laminate crown therapy

This article reviews the infrequently utilized treatment method of forced eruption and how it can serve as an alternative to the sacrifice of the natural root system. Forced eruption can preserve the natural root system and related periodontal architecture, resulting in years of additional service for the patient. It also can maintain adjacent tooth structure while retaining the option for future implant reconstruction. Given the reported success of forced eruption, the technique requires greater attention and increased application among dentists. A case of forced eruption in the anterior maxi

In this first of two articles the theory and practice of creating occlusal clearance for restorative procedures without the removal of tooth tissue is discussed. Earlier techniques for producing minor axial tooth movement are reviewed, together with the relevant literature on continuous eruption and occlusal stability. The indications for axial tooth movement and alternative treatment options are also considered.

UNLABELLED: Congenitally absent teeth may pose aesthetic and functional problems for patients. Treatment is often complex and involves a multidisciplinary team. Using retrospective data, the patient's pathway, when a combined orthodontic-restorative dentistry approach was used, will be summarized. It was found that the number of teeth missing ranged from 1 to 8 with a mean of 3.4 per patient. Combined treatment was found to take on average around 38 months, using over 20 appointments.
CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Hypodontia is a relatively common condition. It is important that practitioners and patie

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of pin retention form and different bonding agents on the tensile bond and re-bond strength of Ni/Cr alloy to the enamel.
METHODS: Sixty bovine permanent incisors were randomly divided into 6 equal groups by the variables of the numbers (0, 1 or 2) of pins to be prepared and bonding agents (Panavia F and Super-Bond C&B). The pin 1mm in diameter and 1mm in depth was prepared vertically to each enamel surface in the groups to be with pins. Cast Ni/Cr alloys cylinders were made and bonded to respective enamels using two different agents. Tensile strengths were

The superior cementation strengths of the adhesive resin cements can now be used in the dental surgery for posts, crowns and bridges and for intra-oral repairs to fractured porcelain fused to metal crowns or bridges, thanks to the availability of miniature sandblasters and portable tin-platers. The author describes the techniques involved.

A new adhesive resin containing a reactive monomer, 4-methacryloxyethyl trimellitate anhydride (4-META) was prepared, and its application to hard tooth tissues and metals was studied. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the average length of 4-META resin tags in enamel and dentin was 22 mu and 40 mu respectively. The tensile adhesive strength between 4-META resin and enamel was about 130 kg/cm2 after etching with 65% phosphoric acid. Its bond strength to dentin treated with a cleaning solution of 10% citric acid and 3% ferric chloride was about 190 kg/cm2. In precious alloys heated at 500

PURPOSE: The use of titanium for implants has shown the biological acceptance of the metal. Recently, methods of using titanium for restorations, crowns, and bridges have been introduced using both cast and spark erosion systems for fabrication. A potential also exists for using titanium for bonded (Maryland) bridges.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, the potential for bonding titanium was investigated by cementing with various adhesives: (A) metal to metal, (B) metal to enamel, and (C) comparing with a known procedure of bonding nickel-chromium. Truncated cones of pure titanium were fabr

UNLABELLED: Although congenital partial hypodontia is widespread, and a variety of solutions for treating this condition in adolescents have been devised, all have had one or more significant drawbacks. A new treatment option that has recently become available, the Procera Maryland Bridge, appears to deliver excellent esthetics and strength. This article discusses that option and presents a case in which it was used successfully.
CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Congenitally missing lateral incisors always present a treatment dilemma for restorative dentists. Numerous treatment options exist; none of w

The use of resin retained bridge work is commonplace within dental practice. Factors that may affect long term success include the type of metal used and surface preparation, the resin, operator technique, the surface area of the tooth, differing movement of the abutment teeth and occlusal forces. A clinical case is reported in which a resin retained bridge with a movable joint was used to restore missing anterior teeth in a 15 year old girl with a developing occlusion.

PURPOSE: To compare the stress distribution in loaded zirconia resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses (RBFDPs) and periodontal tissue using finite element analysis, considering reduced alveolar bone levels and the number of retainers.
METHODS: A human skull was micro-CT scanned. Three framework designs were tested: a 2-unit RBFDP using the maxillary left central incisor (#21) as an abutment, another using a canine (#23), and a 3-unit RBFDP using both #21 and #23. The models were categorized based on the distance from the cemento-enamel junction (CEJ) to the alveolar bone: M1 (1 mm), M2 (2 mm),

In this treatment, a polyetheretherketone (PEEK) resin-bonded prosthesis and a bonding guide fabricated using the digital approach were delivered to a patient with periodontitis and the loss of her left mandibular lateral incisor, simplifying the clinical procedures, improving the accuracy of the prosthesis, and reducing the risk of debonding compared with a conventional resin-bonded prosthesis.

Single-retainer resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses (RBFDPs) are difficult to position due to the pressure of soft tissue at the pontic area and the single-retainer design. This clinical report describes an innovative technique for the insertion of single-retainer RBFDPs. An incisal inserting splint is used to position the RBFDPs reliably. With the help of grooves in the buccal and incisal area of the splint, the precise positioning of the splint on the adjacent teeth and the RBFDP can be controlled. Also, a hole in the retainer wing region of the splint gives access for pressure application

Various options are available in clinical practice for the replacement of a single missing tooth, ranging from conventional fixed and removable dental prostheses to a single implant-supported crown. There are situations in which a semipermanent fixed dental prosthesis may be desirable, particularly for patients who have completed orthodontic treatment but are too young to embark on implant therapy. Following advances in fiber-reinforcement technology, fiber-reinforced composite resin (FRC) now represents a lower-cost alternative to traditional metal-ceramic for the construction of resin-bonded

Inherent differences have been identified between multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary treatment approaches. This article demonstrates the restorative techniques used for the treatment of a patient with congenitally missing lateral incisors according to the interdisciplinary concept outlined in Part I. The restorative design and material selection were based on the size and shape of the existing ridge, occlusion, evaluation of previous treatment, the ability of the restoration to mimic the natural dentition and the supporting gingival tissues, and the patient's expectations and finances.
