Denture stomatitis (DS) is one of the frequent oral diseases caused by multiple factors among denture wearers and is an erythematous lesion of the mucosa in the denture-bearing area, which is a limited and non-specific damage that seriously endangers the oral health of denture wearers. Traditional drug treatment for DS is effective, but it is prone to the development of drug-resistant strains. Therefore, it is important to find new treating options. For the prevention and treatment of DS, there are various methods such as direct administration of azole and polyene antibiotics to the mucosal le

Natural teeth are an integral part of the masticatory system. Absence of dentition subjects the individual to compromised oral function, facial appearance and phonetics. Rehabilitation with dental prosthesis is imperative to restore form and masticatory activity. Currently, fabrication of removable and fixed prosthesis has become most predictable. Nonetheless, there is an increased prevalence of oral stomatitis observed over the years in edentulous individuals wearing removable dentures. Amongst the many pathogens that cause denture infections, Candida albicans is assumed to be the most virule

A 74-yr-old man developed left hemiplegia because of a right middle cerebral artery territory infarction and also had clinical features of dysphagia and speech difficulty. At that time, he complained of neck pain, but the symptom was ignored because he had a nasogastric tube and had been diagnosed with a huge epiglottic cyst that had already shown several symptoms such as severe hoarseness and throat discomfort. A videofluoroscopic swallowing study was planned to find out the cause and the type of dysphagia. On the videofluoroscopic swallowing study, a foreign body was found at the hypopharynx

Microstomia may result from surgical treatment of orofacial neoplasms, cleft lips, maxillofacial trauma, burns, radiotherapy, or scleroderma. A maximal oral opening that is smaller than the size of a complete denture can make prosthetic treatment challenging. This clinical paper presents the prosthodontic management of a total edentulous patient with microstomia. Sectional mandibular and maxillary trays and foldable mandibular and maxillary denture were fabricated for the total edentulous patient.

We report a case of a swallowed partial denture in a 51-year-old man who presented with progressive dysphagia, odynophagia, and fevers. Imaging studies were initially interpreted as supraglottitis with laryngeal inflammation, which was confirmed by direct visualization with flexible endoscopy. Despite appropriate therapy, the patient's symptoms persisted and rigid laryngoscopy was performed, which revealed a partial denture in the hypopharynx and upper esophagus. The subtle imaging appearance of a swallowed denture is discussed.

Four hundred patients with oral cancer were studied to determine if there appeared to be a risk related to denture wearing. Forty-three percent of the group wore dentures, and there seemed to be no correlation between the wearing of dentures and any specific cancer site. Furthermore, there was no difference between denture and nondenture wearers relative to age, sex, time from first signs or symptoms to diagnosis, tumor stage, or tobacco use. In addition, a large number of individuals in the general population wear dentures, and carcinomas occur infrequently in denture-bearing sites. Other stu

An active 72-year-old man presented to the accident and emergency department (A&E) with odynophagia, dysphagia and haemoptysis 6 days after a minor operation and was discharged after treatment for an aspiration pneumonia. He presented to A&E 2 days later with worsening symptoms and was found to have dentures lodged in his larynx which were then removed in theatre. For 6 weeks after removal, he had periodic episodes of frank haemoptysis requiring multiple blood transfusions and, after extensive investigation, was found to have an erosion into an arterial vessel on his right parapharyngeal wall,

BACKGROUND: Kiddy dentures are used to restore the self-confidence, chewing function, and pronunciation of children or when a care provider is concerned about the loss of incisor teeth. However, most studies to date have investigated normal dental arch development, and only a few have explored the effect of kiddy dentures on upper arch development.
METHODS: Fourteen Taiwanese children (7 male and 7 female) who were wearing kiddy dentures due to the loss of their upper anterior teeth were enrolled in this study. Inclusion criteria were the premature loss of maxillary incisors, the patient wear

OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this study were to assess oral malodor in patients with removable complete dentures and analyze its association with age, sex, subjective oral dryness, burning mouth, tongue coating, and overnight denture wear in elderly subjects.
STUDY DESIGN: The study comprised 105 complete denture wearers (56 male, 49 female) between the ages of 50 and 78 from the province of Kirikkale in the Central Anatolia Region of Turkey. Oral malodor was assessed using a portable sulfide monitor. Participants were given a self-administered, structured questionnaire. Baseline and final vo

The past dental literature suggests that gagging in dental patients may be due to anatomic causes. Cephalometrically oriented lateral skull radiographs of 53 patients who were gaggers and of matched controls were examined for an anatomic cause of gagging. No evidence was found that the soft palate was especially long or steeply angled in patients who were gaggers. There was no tongue enlargement or reduction of the pharyngeal airway in patients who were gaggers which might render them intolerant of bulky dentures. The postures of the palate, tongue, and hyoid bone were compared in patients wit

Thirteen representative denture cleansers were selected from among more than 32 retail products to be tested for potential hazard and toxicity to humans. Products were subjected to toxicological analyses by using the biological tests (acute oral toxicity in rats, eye and skin irritation in rabbits) specified in the Federal Hazardous Substances Act Regulations. All products were eye irritants with ranges from slight to severe. Three produced a primary skin irritation response (one was corrosive), while five of the denture cleansers produced oral LD50 values below 5 g/kg. Furthermore, a provisio

INTRODUCTION: GAPO syndrome (#230740) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by growth retardation, alopecia, pseudoanodontia, and optic malformations, hence the acronym GAPO. The presence of both dentitions in the ridge leads to abnormally thick alveolar ridges, which are thought to hinder full denture fabrication and placement. This article aims to report the success of full dentures in two cases with GAPO syndrome with no surgical intervention, and we include observations from the follow-ups.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Patients diagnosed with GAPO syndrome and confirmed by molecul

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the use of removable partial dentures (RPDs) has an effect on long-term survival outcomes amongst partially edentulous adults.
METHODS: Data were extracted from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and linked to public-use mortality files for the period up to 2019. Partially edentulous adults with fewer than 20 teeth were included. RPD use and dentition status were determined by clinical examination. The cohort was propensity score weighted to create a sample which was balanced across 27 covariates (sociodemograph

This report investigates the use of electromagnetic articulography (EMA) to compare basic speech patterns between a patient with traditional dentures to those of a normally dentate person. The goal is to assess the efficacy of traditional dentures in order to generate clinical data and works towards the improvement of denture design. Kinematic and acoustic data were acquired for these two subjects using a variety of repetitive vowel-consonant-vowel tasks. Spatiotemporal parameters indicating dynamic properties of the tongue blade and jaw movements, and timing coordination of the movements betw

Changes in the oral cavity resulting from the loss of teeth and the ensuing reconstruction of a set of teeth by dentures (partial or complete) may cause changes in the speech and voice of the patient. The aim of the present investigation was to study the changes in speech and voice in patients suffering from teeth loss and the degree of speech improvement using dentures. Voice and speech parameters of a set of tested syllables were analysed in 10 patients at the 2nd Clinic of Stomatology. The analysis was carried out by means of an FFT, SoundForge 5.0 programme. Differently expressed acoustic
