Psychological and Clinical Parameters as Predictors of Relapse in Alcohol-Dependent Patients During and After Extensive Inpatient Rehabilitation Treatment.

BACKGROUND: Psychological parameters related to alcohol dependence (AD) affect patients' behavioral and cognitive control, decision making, impulsivity and inhibitory control. People with AD often have a chronic course with a relapse to dependent substance use even after extensive treatment. This study investigated whether the psychological parameters of patients with AD predict (a) premature termination of treatment, and/or (b) relapse into consumption of alcohol from admission until 6 weeks after discharge from an inpatient rehabilitation treatment. METHODS: Participants: Alcohol-dependent

Unraveling the mechanisms of propofol-induced psychological dependence: a multi-omics approach linked to gut microbiota in hippocampal function.

INTRODUCTION: Drug abuse is becoming a global public health crisis. According to the United Nations, the number of drug users worldwide has increased dramatically over the past decade, with a surge in the number of drug abusers. The problem was exacerbated by the expanding market for illicit drugs and the increasing availability of synthetic drugs such as fentanyl. Clinical drug abuse is a problem that requires particular attention, and the potential addictive properties of some drugs and their mechanisms of action are currently unknown, which limits the development and implementation of drug

Psychological distress mediated the effects of self-stigma on quality of life in opioid-dependent individuals: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Both stigma and psychological distress affect quality of life (QOL). This study is an attempt to determine the effects of these two factors on QOL and to explore possible mediation effects between psychological distress and self-stigma in opioid-dependent individuals. METHODS: This cross-sectional study comprised 268 consecutive, treatment-seeking opioid-dependent individuals who were interviewed using the brief version of the World Health Organization Quality of Life instrument (WHOQOL-BREF), the Self-Stigma Scale-Short (SSS-S), the Chinese Health Questionnaire-12 (CHQ-12), and t

From AI dependence to reflective collaboration: psychological ownership, competency anxiety, and perceived support in AI-assisted learning.

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) can improve efficiency in academic work. However, it also raises a central psychological question: when AI helps produce a task, why do some learners still experience the final work as their own, whereas others experience it as polished but psychologically distant? This study examines psychological ownership and competency anxiety in AI-assisted learning, distinguishing between dependent AI outsourcing and reflective human-AI collaboration. An exploratory qualitative interview-based design with supplementary background information was used. The backgr

Psychological stress exacerbates vitiligo via dysregulated proteolysis of substance P and MRGPRX2-dependent mast cell activation.

BACKGROUND: The impact of psychological stress on vitiligo progression remains poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the effects of substance P (SP) and its proteolytic fragments (SP1-9 and SP1-7) on mast cell activation and vitiligo exacerbation. METHODS: Skin specimens were biopsied from patients with active vitiligo, or from mice subjected to chronic restraint stress (CRS). A tyrosinase-related protein (Tyrp)-2180-188 peptide-induced vitiligo model was established in wild-type (WT) and in Mas-related G protein-coupled receptor-B2 (MrgprB2, MRGPRX2 in humans) knockout mice. A critical narrative synthesis of psychological correlates, measurement, and reported findings on conversational AI engagement and dependence-related constructs.

Conversational AI systems are used for task support, cognitive offloading, companionship, self-disclosure, and mood regulation. Research on these uses is distributed across trust, reliance, attachment, companionship, problematic use, and dependence, although these labels refer to different processes. This article presents a critical narrative synthesis of 51 peer-reviewed records retained from a curated working bibliography of 56 items. The corpus was assembled iteratively through database searching and citation chasing during 2025 and early 2026. Complete search histories and duplicate-remova

Psychological Factors Influencing Adherence to NIV in Neuromuscular Patients Dependent on Non Invasive Mechanical Ventilation: Preliminary Results.

BACKGROUND: Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) is associated with improvement of both morbility and mortality in patients affected by neuromuscular diseases with chronic respiratory failure. Several studies have also shown that long-term NIV positively impacts the patient's quality of life and perception of disease status. Its effectiveness is likely related to the adherence to NIV. Several factors, patient- and not patient-related, may compromise adherence to NIV, such as physical, behavioral, familiar, and social issues. Few data are currently available on the role of psychological factors in in

Co-occurring psychiatric symptoms are associated with increased psychological, social, and medical impairment in opioid dependent pregnant women.

The interaction of psychiatric symptoms with drug dependence during pregnancy is not well understood. This study examines the relationship of psychiatric symptoms to severity of drug use and drug-related problems among participants in a clinical trial of pharmacologic treatment of opioid dependence during pregnancy (N = 174). A total of 64.6% reported additional psychiatric symptoms (48.6% mood symptoms, 40.0% anxiety symptoms, and 12.6% suicidal thinking). Women who endorsed co-occurring psychiatric symptoms showed more severe impairment on the Addiction Severity Index. Further investigation

AI Chatbot Dependence as an Indirect Link Between Social Anxiety and Psychological Resilience: The Moderating Role of Perceived Social Support.

Generative artificial intelligence has transformed AI chatbots into systems that can provide information, emotional feedback, and social interaction. Although prior research has examined AI adoption, trust, and continuance intention, less is known about sustained reliance on AI chatbots and its relationship with psychological adaptation. Drawing on an integrated compensation-resource framework, this study examined whether social anxiety was indirectly associated with psychological resilience through AI chatbot dependence and whether this association varied across levels of perceived social sup

Psychological factors and obesity, not thyroid biomarkers, predict thyroid-dependent quality of life in treated hypothyroidism: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: A significant number of patients with primary hypothyroidism report persistent symptoms and decreased quality of life (QoL) despite biochemically adequate levothyroxine replacement. Individual variations in thyroxine conversion, autoimmune inflammation, and psychological factors have all been implicated as a potential cause. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study we have examined the association of numerous demographic, disease-specific, and laboratory parameters as well as three patient reported outcome measures with thyroid-dependent QoL as measured by the Underactive Thyroid-De

Nicotine dependence, psychological distress and personality traits as possible predictors of smoking cessation. Results of a double-blind study with nicotine patch.

AIM: Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) is an effective treatment for smokers who want to quit, however, the rates of successful quitting can be improved even more. In this context, nicotine dependence (assessed via the Fagerström Tolerance Questionnaire, FTQ), psychological distress (measured via the Symptom Rating Test, SRT), and personality traits (evaluated via the Adult Eysenck Personality Inventory, AEPI) were evaluated as possible predictors of smoking cessation. RESULTS: A total of 297 cigarette smokers were followed for one year as part of a NRT double-blind, parallel group, randomiz

Do current smokers use more cigarettes and become more dependent on nicotine because of psychological distress after a natural disaster?

Natural disasters increase nicotine dependence and cigarette consumption, but the exact mechanisms and conditions responsible for this increase are relatively unclear. This study explored whether posttraumatic stress and depressive symptoms were pathways to increased nicotine dependence and cigarette consumption after disaster exposure using a representative sample of current smokers who were living in New Orleans at the time Hurricane Katrina struck (n = 175), and a comparison sample of smokers from Memphis (n = 222) who were not directly impacted by Hurricane Katrina. We assessed whether nic
