Kersten et al (1997 Perception 26 171-192) found that the perceived motion of an object in a 3-D scene was determined by the motion of a shadow. In the present study, we compared the effect of a shadow to that of a second object on the ground in determining the perceived position in depth of a floating object in both dynamic and stationary scenes. Changing the second (lower) object from textured to dark increased the influence of the second object on the judged position of the first object. Giving the second object zero thickness had this effect only if it was also dark. Variations in the heig

Two experiments evaluated the importance of temporal integration for the perception and discrimination of solid object shape. In Experiment 1, observers anorthoscopically viewed moving or stationary cast shadows of naturally shaped solid objects (bell peppers, Capsicum annuum) through narrow (4-mm wide) slits. At any given moment, observers could only see a very small portion of the overall object shape (generally less than 10%). The results showed that the observers' discrimination performance for the moving cast shadows was much higher than that obtained for the stationary shadows, demonstra

Accurate monocular depth estimation (MDE) is a foundational task in endoscopic surgery, critical for augmenting depth perception and aiding surgical navigation. While diffusion-based and discriminative depth estimators demonstrate complementary strengths, they also exhibit asymmetric errors: discriminative models yield precise geometric boundaries but struggle in homogeneous or saturated areas, whereas diffusion models recover fine textures at the cost of occasional structural incoherence. To systematically exploit this complementarity, we present CoDepth, a novel framework that leverages conf

When an observer moves in space, the retinal projection of a stationary object either expands if the motion is toward the object or shifts horizontally if the motion contains a lateral component. This study examined the impact of expansive optic flow and lateral motion parallax on the accuracy of depth perception for observers with normal or artificially reduced acuity and asked whether any benefit is due to the continuous motion or to the discrete object image displacement. Stationary participants viewed a virtual room on a computer screen. They used an on-screen slider to estimate the depth

Research has shown that consistent stereoscopic information improves the vection (i.e. illusions of self-motion) induced in stationary observers. This study investigates the effects of placing stereoscopic information into direct conflict with monocular motion signals by swapping the observer's left and right eye views to reverse disparity. Experiments compared the vection induced by stereo-consistent, stereo-reversed and flat-stereo patterns of: (1) same-size optic flow, which contained monocular motion perspective information about self-motion, and (2) changing-size optic flow, which provide

Phenomenally strong visual illusions are described in which the motion of an object's cast shadow determines the perceived 3-D trajectory of the object. Simply adjusting the motion of a shadow is sufficient to induce dramatically different apparent trajectories of the object casting the shadow. Psychophysical results obtained with the use of 3-D graphics are reported which show that: (i) the information provided by the motion of an object's shadow overrides other strong sources of information and perceptual biases, such as the assumption of constant object size and a general viewpoint; (ii) th

PURPOSE: To resolve the presbyope's dilemma by determining the optimum location of the far-point that maximizes depth-of-field for reading printed text.
METHODS: Geometrical optical analysis of defocused retinal images was used to compute the size of retinal blur circles relative to object size. Functional consequences of changes in viewing distance, pupil diameter, and far-point location were assessed using the blur ratio concept. Depth-of-field was specified by the ratio of the maximum distance to the minimum distance for which printed text of a given size is legible.
RESULTS: For the emme

The primary goal of strabismus treatment is to correct and reverse a pathologic condition. Successful treatment is associated with relief from visual confusion or diplopia, a very high incidence of sensory binocular vision, an expanded peripheral visual field, and improved psychosocial function. Binocularity before and after strabismus surgery should be well understood. The stereopsis or sensory fusion should be examined routinely. The measurements should be repeated with the angle of strabismus neutralized with loose prisms. Eye misalignment is measured using the alternate prism and cover tes

van Zuijlen et al. (2025) have recently argued that the perceptual distinction between rigid and non-rigid motions of a torus knot can be based on patterns of optical flow produced by systematic changes in image shading. The present commentary will present theoretical analyses and empirical demonstrations to show that the 2D vector flow field produced by smoothly shaded surfaces is relatively useless as a source of information about rigid and nonrigid motion when an object moves relative to its sources of illumination. The evidence to support this conclusion is that the nonrigid distortions ca

Information about the motion in depth of an object along the midline of a stationary observer is provided by changes in image size (looming), changes in vergence produced by changes in binocular disparity of the images of the object, and changes in relative disparity between the moving object and a stationary object. Each of these cues was independently varied in the dichoptiscope, which is described in Howard, Fukuda, and Allison (2013). The stimuli were a small central dot and a textured surface moving to and fro in depth along the midline. Observers tracked the motion with the unseen hand.

Inferring 3D surface structure is one of the most fundamental functions of vision. There are many well-known depth cues, such as shading, texture, and highlights. However, how these cues are extracted from images-and what exactly they tell the brain about 3D shape-is not fully understood. Here, we describe how these seemingly distinct 3D shape cues could share a common currency for the first stages of shape estimation. The key insight is that when patterns such as shading or texture are projected from a 3D object into the 2D retinal image, they are spatially distorted, with profound consequenc

The familiar-size cue to perceived depth was investigated in five experiments. The stimuli were stationary familiar objects viewed monocularly under otherwise completely darkened visual conditions. Perceived depth was measured directly with the method of verbal report and indirectly with the head-motion procedure. Although the familiar-size cue influenced verbal reports of the distances of the objects, it did not determine perceived depth as assessed with the head-motion procedure. These findings support the claim that familiar size is not a major determinant of perceived depth, and that cogni

Having long considered that extraretinal information plays little or no role in spatial vision, the study of structure from motion (SfM) has confounded a moving observer perceiving a stationary object with a non-moving observer perceiving a rigid object undergoing equal and opposite motion. However, recently it has been shown that extraretinal information does play an important role in the extraction of structure from motion by enhancing motion cues for objects that are stationary in an allocentric, world-fixed reference frame (Nature 409 (2001) 85). Here, we test whether stationarity per se i

Panum's limiting case is a phenomenon of monocular occlusion in binocular vision. This occurs when one object is occluded by the other object for one eye, but the two objects are both visible for the other eye. Although previous studies have found that vertical gradient of horizontal disparity and cue conflict are two important factors for double fusion, the effect of training on the sensitivity and stability of Panum's limiting case remains unknown. The current study trained 26 participants for 5 days with several of Panum's configurations (Gilliam, Frisby, and Wang series). The latency and d

Stereopsis provides us with a vivid impression of the depth and distance of objects in our 3- dimensional world. Stereopsis is important for a number of everyday visual tasks, including (but not limited to) reaching and grasping, fine visuo-motor control, and navigating in our world. This review briefly discusses the neural substrate for normal binocular vision and stereopsis and its development in primates; outlines some of the issues and limitations of stereopsis tests and examines some of the factors that limit the typical development of stereopsis and the causes and consequences of stereo-

Despite hundreds of neuroimaging studies examining the neural correlates of 3D shape perception (as opposed to 2D), there is no consensus because of the diversity of stimuli and depth cues used. We addressed this problem through an activation likelihood estimation (ALE) coordinate-based meta-analysis, pooling together studies that examined the 3D vs 2D shape contrast across multiple depth cues used to render the 3D shapes. A systematic review was performed using Medline, PsychInfo and Embase databases and yielded 25 empirical studies after screening. Articles were split into cue types-disparit

Cybersickness is an enduring problem for users of virtual environments. While it is generally assumed that cybersickness is caused by discrepancies in perceived self-motion between the visual and vestibular systems, little is known about the relative contribution of active motion parallax and binocular disparity to the occurrence of cybersickness. We investigated the role of these two depth cues in cybersickness by simulating a roller-coaster ride using a head-mounted display. Participants could see the tracks via a virtual frame placed at the front of the roller-coaster cart. We manipulated t

Size constancy was investigated in DF, a patient with visual form agnosia, using a technique based on Emmert's law of visual after-images. DF was first given a task in which she was asked to indicate the distance of a vertical surface and a task where she had to estimate the width of a series of squares (widths ranging from 5 cm to 35 cm) placed at varying distances and having a constant visual angle. In the distance estimation task, DF greatly overestimated the distance of the vertical surface placed in front of her. DF also had great difficulty performing the size estimation task. DF then pe

Neurons in the inferior temporal cortex (IT) of the macaque fire more strongly to some shapes than others, but little is known about how to characterize this shape tuning more generally, because most previous studies have used somewhat arbitrary variations in the stimuli with unspecified magnitudes of the changes. The present investigation studied the modulation of IT cells to nonaccidental property (NAP, i.e., invariant to orientations in depth) and metric property (MP, i.e., depth dependent) variations of dimensions of generalized cones (a general formalism for characterizing shapes hypothes
