BACKGROUND: Spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiae have recently been identified for the first time in UK ticks. This included the findings of Rickettsia helvetica in Ixodes ricinus and Rickettsia raoultii in Dermacentor reticulatus. This paper further investigates the occurrence of SFG rickettsiae in additional geographically distinct populations of D. reticulatus, and for the first time, investigates the occurrence of SFG rickettsiae in UK populations of Haemaphysalis punctata ticks.
METHODS: Questing D. reticulatus and H. punctata were collected at a number of sites in England and Wales. DN

Dates of onset of canine babesiosis within a hyperendemic focus in France (Rhone Valley, south of Jura and north of the Alps) were compared to the seasonal population level of the adult stage of Dermacentor reticulatus over a 12-month period (December 1982-November 1983). Cases of babesiosis occurred in spring and fall when adult D. reticulatus were active. The fluctuations of the vector tick population and the onsets of canine babesiosis were also correlated with climatic changes: no tick activity or clinical cases of disease were detected in winter (low temperature) or in summer. The slight

In southern Udmurtia, where occur both Dermacentor reticulatus and Ixodes persulcatus, in the years of high abundance of small mammals feeding periods of larvae and nymphs of these ticks coincide completely. The duration of simultaneous parasitism of preimago of the above ixodid species on animals is of epidemiological significance as far as within this period the infection of young stages of D. reticulatus with the virus of tick-borne encephalitis occurs. This is confirmed by the isolation of I strain of the virus from D. reticulatus collected at the state of engorged nymphs on hosts common w

Ticks are blood-sucking ectoparasites of humans and animals, ranking second only to mosquitoes as vectors of diseases. Dermacentor abaensis is distributed in Sichuan, Qinghai, and Gansu, China. Because D. abaensis harbors several pathogens, it poses a threat to public health and livestock production. However, the midgut microbiota of D. abaensis at distinct feeding states remains poorly characterized. Adult D. abaensis ticks at various feeding states were collected from yaks in Gansu Province, China. Genomic DNA was extracted from midguts and midgut contents of unfed, partially fed, and fully

The Rocky Mountain wood tick, Dermacentor andersoni Stiles, is the most common human biting tick in the Rocky Mountain region of the USA. Although Rickettsia spp. and Colorado tick fever virus have been studied in D. andersoni in certain areas of their distribution, investigations of most other tickborne pathogens are lacking. Despite the history of Rocky Mountain spotted fever in the Bitterroot Mountains of western Montana, no comprehensive surveys of large numbers of ticks for Rickettsia spp. have been conducted there for >40 years. For the present study, host-seeking adult D. andersoni were

BACKGROUND: The significance of tick-borne diseases has increased considerably in recent years. Because of the unique distribution of the tick species Dermacentor reticulatus in Poland, comprising two expanding populations, Eastern and Western that are separated by a Dermacentor-free zone, it is important to conduct studies on the process of tick expansion and emergence of canine babesiosis. The main aim of the current study was to monitor the expansion of D. reticulatus populations from spring 2016 to autumn 2018 to determine (1) the actual geographical range of this tick species, and (2) and

Juvenile Dermacentor reticulatus ticks inhabit nests and burrows of their rodent hosts and cannot be collected from vegetation. To detect vertical transmission of Babesia canis in D. reticulatus, we studied larvae and nymphs collected from rodents. However, the molecular techniques used for detection of pathogen DNA are sensitive enough to detect not only pathogens vectored by ticks but also those taken up with current or previous blood meals ('meal contamination') or just present in the environment and on the tick or host surface ('environmental contaminations'). Thus, an additional aim of ou

Babesiosis is a potentially fatal tick-borne zoonotic disease caused by a species complex of blood parasites that can infect a variety of vertebrates, particularly dogs, cattle, and humans. In the United States, human babesiosis is caused by two distinct parasites, Babesia microti and Babesia duncani. The enzootic cycle of B. microti, endemic in the northeastern and upper midwestern regions, has been well characterised. In the western United States, however, the natural reservoir host and tick vector have not been identified for B. duncani, greatly impeding efforts to understand and manage thi

Brucellosis is a relatively common zoonosis, particularly in the developing countries. Our aim was to cultivate the Brucella wild-type strain from eggs of Dermacentor marginatus, and to molecularly investigate the presence of Brucella DNA in different developmental stages. A total of 350 engorged adult female ticks were collected from sheep and cattle, and individually placed into a single clean breathable tube suitable for laying eggs and for the development of larvae. Detection of Brucella DNA was attempted in engorged female ticks and their offsprings based on the Brucella outer membrane pr

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Babesia is an intraerythrocytic protozoan parasite which is transmitted by hard ticks of the Ixodidae family. One of the problems associated with protozoan infection is the determination and characterization of the vectors. The aim of the present study was to detect Babesia ovis in the salivary gland of Dermacentor spp.
METHODS: A total of 200 adult Dermacentor ticks (139 D. niveus and 61 D. marginatus) were collected from sheep suspected to be infected with babesiosis in the Ardabil region of Iran from April to September 2015 (active season of ticks); and were identi

BACKGROUND: Two clustered clinical cases of canine babesiosis were diagnosed by veterinary practitioners in two areas of northeastern Italy close to natural parks. This study aimed to determine the seroprevalence of babesial infection in dogs, the etiological agents that cause canine babesiosis and the potential tick vector for the involved Babesia spp.
METHODS: The study area was represented by two parks in northeastern Italy: Groane Regional Park (Site A) and the Ticino Valley Lombard Park (Site B). From March to May 2015 ticks were collected from the vegetation in three transects in each s

Investigations into the effect of the intensity of invasion on tick-questing behaviour were conducted on 3 groups of rabbits: 1) 10 females and 5 males, 2) 20 females and 10 males, 3) 40 females and 20 males in the case of I. ricinus, whereas in the case of D. reticulatus, another three groups were used: 1) 10 females and 15 males, 2) 20 females and 15 males, 3) 40 females and 15 males. Given the different invasion intensities, no significant difference was found in the time of attachment to the host (p=0.3773) or in the feeding period (p=0.1051) for Ixodes ricinus females. In turn, body weigh

Dermacentor reticulatus ticks from Poland were investigated by molecular methods for the presence of rickettsiae. During 2003/2004, a total of 285 adult ticks was assayed using primers RpCS.877 and RpCS.1258 derived from the citrate synthase (gltA) gene, and 116 samples (40.7%) were positive for rickettsial DNA. Ten out of these positive samples were further assayed using SLO1F and SLO1R primers derived form the rOmpA-encoding gene to confirm that detected rickettsiae belong to the spotted fever group (SFG). The obtained sequence of a fragment of the gltA gene of Rickettsia sp. isolated from P

Babesia infection was studied in 21 blood samples of dogs with symptoms of babesiosis and among 72 Dermacentor reticulatus and 70 Ixodes persulcatus ticks from southwestern Siberia, Russia. Babesia DNA was detected by hemi-nested PCR based on the 18S rRNA gene with subsequent direct sequencing. All of the analyzed canine blood samples and three D. reticulatus, but none from I. persulcatus ticks studied were shown to contain Babesia DNA. Nucleotide sequences of the Babesia 18S rRNA gene fragment of 354 bp long for all 24 positive samples appeared to belong to the subspecies Babesia canis canis

BACKGROUND: The genus Rickettsia contains the lineages spotted fever group (SFG), typhus group (TG), and transitional group (TRG). The spotted fever group Rickettsia (SFGR) is transmitted by ticks. The tick species Dermacentor nuttalli is considered the main vector carrying SFGR in Inner Mongolia. Studying the genetic diversity and population structure of Rickettsia is essential for developing effective control strategies and predicting evolutionary trends of Rickettsia.
METHODS: In 2019 we collected 408 D. nuttalli in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, detected the percentage of Rickettsi

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Dermacentor reticulatus is one of the tick species of the greatest epidemiological importance in Europe. To date, the Eastern European and Western European populations of this tick species have been separated by an area located in Poland where the species has never been found. In this study, newly discovered D. reticulatus localities in areas transformed by human activities in central-southern Poland are described.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The specimens of the ornate dog tick were identified among ticks collected from companion animals in 2010, 2012, 2013, and 2014. T
