Occupational allergic contact dermatitis from cyanoacrylate.

Cyanoacrylates are widely used in adhesive techniques. Cyanoacrylate adhesives differ physically for the different needs of application, and chemically in function of the size of ester molecules. A 40-year-old man employed at the National Mint and Stamp factory presented with hyperkeratotic lesions on the fingers of the right hand. His job consisted of fixing microchips to plastic phone cards with Loctite Series 414. Patch testing confirmed sensitivity to cyanoacrylates. After the diagnosis of allergic contact dermatitis was established, the patient, to be cured of the dermatitis, changed his

[Propacetamol and new occupational contact dermatitis].

We describe the cases of three hospital nurses who presented eczematous lesions on the hands and eyelids. They worked in surgery department or in post anaesthesia recovery room, all preparing syringes of Pro-Dafalgan (propacetamol: parenteral paracetamol form). They were not sensitive to oral paracetamol or occupational products and latex. During week-end or holidays when they stopped handling Pro-Dafalgan, the eczema recovered but relapsed on working. A few cases are described in the literature so precautions begin to be preconized for healthcare workers but they are not usually in practice.

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis from spices.

About 1000 patients were investigated at our clinic during 1991-1995 for occupational skin disease, and 5 had occupational allergic contact dermatitis from spices. The patients were chefs, or kitchen, coffee room, and restaurant workers. All patients had hand (or finger) dermatitis. The causative spices were: garlic, cinnamon, ginger, allspice and clove. The same patients also had allergic patch test reactions to foods: tomato, lettuce and carrot. Paprika elicited a weak allergic patch test reaction in 2 patients. Occupational allergic contact dermatitis from spices is relatively rare, but nee

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis from mercury.

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis from metallic mercury is rare. Here we present the only 2 patients with relevant occupational mercury allergy detected at our clinic since 1974. The first patient was a dental nurse who became sensitized to metallic mercury from amalgam when handling uncured amalgam without protective gloves. The second patient had previously been sensitized to mercury from topical medicaments and developed work-related dermatitis when a mercury thermometer was broken at her place of work. Both patients had a positive patch test reaction to metallic mercury.

Patch testing in occupational hand dermatitis.

Patch testing is valuable for the management of most forms of hand eczema; it tends to be diagnostically useful, however, only in the nonendogenous forms. Historical and morphologic clues that distinguish hand eczema of endogenous from that of exogenous causes can increase the yield of valuable information from patch testing. Knowledge of the occupations at risk for skin disease and the time required for irritant and allergic contact dermatitis to develop will improve history taking--the key to suspecting an occupational component.

Occupational and non-occupational allergic contact dermatitis: a follow-up study.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The aim of this study was to obtain insight into the clinical course and prognosis of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD), including potential effects of genetic and environmental factors. METHODS: Eighty-two patients with previously defined ACD acquired occupationally (OACD) or non-occupationally (NOACD) were patch retested and evaluated for the presence of persistent eczema, atopy and filaggrin mutations. RESULTS: The crude risk for the persistence of a positive patch test (PT) reaction was 6.3 times higher (95% CI 3.63-11.0) for PT reactions assessed as '+++' compared to '+

Occupational and Hand Dermatitis: a Practical Approach.

Occupational skin disease is common. It affects workers more often than reported. Contact dermatitis, both irritant and allergic, accounts for the majority of occupational skin diagnoses. Occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) frequently affects the hands and may have a profound impact on an employee's ability to perform a job. Severe OCD can affect a worker's activities of daily living and can even lead to job loss. Numerous irritants have been described in the workplace, from the common (wet work) to the more obscure (warm, dry air). Several contact allergens may be work-related, and the majo

Occupational contact dermatitis to acrylates in a manicurist.

We report the case of a manicurist who developed an allergic skin reaction to acrylates, manifested by bullous lesions on fingertips and eczema of the hands and ears. Patch tests showed positive reactions to 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate, ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate, triethyleneglycol dimethacrylate, 1,6-hexandiol diacrylate, 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate and triethyleneglycol diacrylate. Because of her skin disorder, she had to give up her job. She was not correctly advised on retraining and started to work as a dental nurse. Soon after re-exposure to acrylates in dent

Occupational contact dermatitis in the pharmaceutical industry.

Occupation-induced skin reactions are not infrequently observed in the pharmaceutical industry. Workers may come in contact with irritant substances and also with chemically reactive intermediates or drugs that may be potential sensitizers. The skin lesions can be located at the site of contact, usually the hands, although airborne reactions on exposed and even nonexposed areas (eg, by particles trapped under clothing) are not uncommon. Generalized reactions may occur due to inhalation or transcutaneous absorption. An accidental exposure to a highly allergenic compound may cause a chemical bur

Occupational dermatitis in a prefabrication construction factory.

In a field study of occupational dermatoses in a prefabrication construction factory, 272 workers were interviewed, examined and patch tested to chromate, cobalt, nickel, rubber mixes, epoxy resin, melamine formaldehyde and conplasts. The prevalence of occupational dermatitis was 14% (38/272); 57% (22/38) were irritant dermatitis from cement; 39.5% (15/38) were allergic contact dermatitis from cement (2 with concomitant rubber glove allergy); and 2.5% (1/38) were allergic to rubber chemicals in gloves. The overall prevalence of chromate sensitivity was 8.5% (23/272), with the highest rate from

Occupational nickel dermatitis in the electroforming industry.

An outbreak of occupational dermatitis in an electroforming plant where there was heavy exposure to nickel is described. Patch test investigations confirmed nickel allergy in 13 of 27 exposed individuals. Nickel chloride was found to be a more reliable patch test allergen than nickel sulphate. Improvements in industrial hygiene led to an immediate decrease in the incidence of dermatitis. Persistent patch test sensitivity to nickel was found in three individuals who had been removed from the process chemicals for some years.

[Occupational dermatitis due to inhalation and ingestion].

Occupational materials contacted systemically, either by inhalation or ingestion, are capable of producing toxic as well as allergic skin reactions in exposed persons. Depigmentations of vitiligo type due to paratertiary butyl-phenol, various exanthems due to trichlorethylene fumes in the metal industry and due to alpha-phenylindole in the plastics industry, and the so-called vinyl chloride sickness in the PVC industry are examples of conditions with a probable toxic pathogenesis. Allergic skin conditions may occur as either immediate type (urticaria and Quincke's edema) or delayed type (endog

Occupational eyelid dermatitis: A public health perspective.

Occupational eyelid dermatitis (ED) is a much-neglected issue in public health, with important ramifications for patients' quality of life, employment and facial aesthetics. Patients with occupational ED are often younger, male and with an atopic background compared with those with non-occupational ED. Common contact allergens include rubber additives, acrylates, isothiazolinones, fragrances, epoxy resins, potassium dichromate, colophonium, metals and topical medications. Contact allergens and irritants may cause occupational ED by direct or indirect exposure, for example, through transfer by

New causes of occupational allergic contact dermatitis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Occupational allergic contact dermatitis (OACD) is an important work-related skin disease. Information about the causative agents comes from many sources, including patch test databases, registries, case series and case reports. This review summarizes new information about common causative allergens and diagnosis. RECENT FINDINGS: Common causes of OACD include rubber components, epoxies and preservatives. New exposure sources for these allergens continue to be described. Often these exposure sources are related to the changing world around us, such as allergens related to s

Fibreglass dermatitis: diagnostic challenges and occupational interventions.

Fibreglass dermatitis is a common occupationally acquired irritant contact dermatitis, where small spicules of fibreglass lodging in the stratum corneum result in mechanical irritation. We present two patients, an air-conditioning ducting worker and an injection moulding machine operator, who both presented with generalized pruritus. In the first case, polarized microscopy of a skin biopsy specimen demonstrated rare small spicules, with a diameter of 1 µm, lodged in the stratum corneum. In the second case, skin tape stripping demonstrated fibreglass particles, not found on skin biopsy. Proper
