Reconstructive challenge of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans in the female breast.

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans is an uncommon locally aggressive malignant neoplasm that most frequently appears in the trunk, followed by the extremities, head, and neck. But occurrence in the breast is extremely rare. We present a case of a 28-year-old woman, who had a history of trauma 5 years previously and excision 1 year before presentation at our clinic. We performed wide excision, together with microscopic and immunohistochemical analysis. No postoperative oncologic treatment was used and she remains disease-free 1 year after the surgery without any tumor recurrence. Here, we report a

Mohs micrographic surgery for dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans of the vulva.

Introduction. Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans (DFSP) is a rare cutaneous tumour of low/intermediate malignant potential, which occasionally arises on the vulva. Historically, the treatment has been wide local excision (WLE). Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) is now recommended to ensure precise margin control. MMS to treat DFSP of the trunk and extremities is well documented. However, no report to date has described its use in vulval DFSP. Case History. A 39 year old woman presented with a longstanding nodule in the left labium majus. Histology after surgical removal showed an incompletely excis

Microscopic margins and results of surgery for dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans.

BACKGROUND: Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans is a rare low-grade sarcoma of the skin with a tendency to recur locally after inadequate excision. Treatment has traditionally been wide excision with a 2- to 3-cm gross margin. Because of the variable results presented in mainly retrospective reports, it has been queried whether local control can be as good with conventional surgery as with micrographic surgery. METHODS: Forty patients with dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans treated by surgical excision were operated on at our center from 1987 to 2001. Data were recorded prospectively. Twenty-seven p

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans: a clinicopathological study in an African population.

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a slow-growing, locally aggressive fibrous tumour which rarely metastasises to regional lymphnode or distant sites. The rarity, age pattern of occurrence and the male to female ratio of the tumour were found to correspond to reports elsewhere. But contrary to other reports, the lower limb and not the trunk was found to be the site of predilection of the tumour in Tanzania. This and the tendency of occurrence of the tumour on the scalp in females rather than at other sites in the head and neck region seem to implicate trauma as a predisposing factor. It

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans metastatic to the lung. A case report.

A case is presented of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans of the gluteal region with metastasis to the lung appearing 7 years after wide excision of the primary lesion. The world literature is reviewed. The clinical and pathologic features of dermatofibrosarcoma are reviewed and treatment is discussed, with the aim of emphasizing the need for long-term follow-up examination of lymph nodes and for metastases following wide excision of these lesions.

Morpheaform Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans Mimicking Panniculitis: A Case Report.

We present the case of a 21-year-old female with a 2-year history of a slowly enlarging, asymptomatic violaceous atrophic plaque on the left lower abdomen. Ultrasonography suggested panniculitis, but persistent lesion prompted skin biopsy, which revealed storiform spindle cells with dermal sclerosis and subcutaneous honeycomb infiltration; immunohistochemistry demonstrated diffuse CD34 positivity, confirming morpheaform dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP). This rare variant of DFSP lacks the classic protuberant nodules and is easily mistaken for benign inflammatory or fibrosing conditions.

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans mimicking hemorrhoids: a rare case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans is a rare soft tissue sarcoma. Perianal involvement is exceptional and may mimic benign anorectal disease, leading to delayed diagnosis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 28-year-old man presented with 6 months of anal pain, pruritus, and intermittent bleeding, initially treated as hemorrhoids. Surgical excision of presumed hemorrhoidal tissue revealed dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans with fibrosarcomatous transformation and focally involved margins. Molecular testing confirmed COL1A1-PDGFB fusion. Staging PET-CT showed localized disease without

Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans (DFSP): Current Treatments and Clinical Trials.

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a rare soft tissue sarcoma with an incidence of 0.008 to 0.045 cases per 100,000 per year, accounting for less than 1% of all soft tissue sarcomas. It mainly affects adults aged 30-50 years, usually on the trunk and proximal extremities. DFSP is Locally aggressive, with metastases occurring in up to 5% of cases, typically < 1%. Diagnosis is based on histology, including CD34 antigen expression and COL1A1-PDGFB fusion detection by FISH or RT-PCR. Mohs micrographic surgery is the mainstay of treatment, ensuring clear margins to minimise recurrence. Radio

Oncological efficiency of wide local excision in dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans.

BACKGROUND: Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a slow-growing, low- to intermediate-grade malignant sarcoma. Its optimal treatment is resection with wide margins; the likelihood of local control associated with this procedure exceeds 90%. The probability of regional or distant metastases is <5%. OBJECTIVE: We examined the clinical, epidemiological, and pathological features, the treatment types, and outcomes of patients to investigate the width of safe surgical margins (SM) and how the width of SMs affected recurrence in DFSP. METHODS: We retrospectively examined the records of 60 pat

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans of penis: Case report and literature review.

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a rare mesenchymal skin tumor with intermediate to low grade malignancy and occasional distant metastasis and high rate of recurrence locally. It mostly involves trunk, extremities, scalp, and neck. This article describes a middle-aged married male with a DFSP lesion involving ventral aspect of glans and distal shaft of penis who underwent local excision and primary closure. The patient was tumor-free at three years of follow-up.

[Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (Darier-Ferrand) of the abdomen: a case report].

Dermatofibrosarcoma is a rare skin tumor. Morphological characteristics can be misleading and unknown to most of physicians. Diagnostic delay may affect patient´s management and prognosis. We here report the case of a young patient with lesions protruding from the abdominal wall mistaken for benign cysts. X-ray examination revealed subcutaneous adipose tissue mass. This was suspected of being a fibrosarcoma. The mass was resected with a macroscopic safety margin. The anatomo-pathological study confirmed the diagnosis of dermatofibrosarcoma. Clinical and radiological follow-up examinations didn

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans in a pediatric patient with ataxia telangiectasia syndrome.

Ataxia telangiectasia (AT) is a rare autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disorder caused by a mutation in the ATM gene. An impaired immune response due to the gene mutation leads to an increased risk of infection and malignancy. We present a rare case of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans arising in a patient with AT.

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans: a comprehensive review and update on diagnosis and management.

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a rare superficial tumor characterized by high rates of local recurrence and low risk of metastasis. DFSP occurs most commonly on the trunk and proximal extremities, affects all races, and often develops between the second and fifth decade of life. The tumor grows slowly, typically over years. Histologically, several variants of DFSP have been described and should be well characterized to avoid misdiagnosis with other tumors. These include pigmented (Bednar tumor), myxoid, myoid, granular cell, sclerotic, atrophic DFSP, giant cell fibroblastoma, and DF

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans of the scalp: a relatively unusual site of occurrence.

Dermatofibrosarcoma protruberans is an uncommon low grade soft tissue tumor comprising of only 5% of adult soft tissue sarcomas. Scalp is a relatively uncommon site of occurrence for this tumor. Its identification at this site and differentiation from benign fibrous histiocytoma is important due to the propensity of recurrence and metastasis in the former unless a wide, optimal surgical margin is ensured during excision.
