Multi-scale analysis of urban forests and socioeconomic patterns in a desert city, Phoenix, Arizona.

Understanding the relationship between various socioeconomic factors and urban forest structure is essential for directing resources to ensure equitable distribution of green space. Through a case study of a desert city, i.e., Phoenix, AZ, this study provides a novel application of Multiscale Geographically Weighted Regression (MGWR) in which we explore the spatially variable relationships between a wide array of socioeconomic indicators and urban forest attributes. Through the computation of various scales of influence for different explanatory variables, MGWR enhances our analysis's precisio

Vector-based navigation in desert ants: the significance of path-integration vectors.

In the longstanding discussion of whether insects, especially central place foragers such as bees and ants, use metric representations of their landmark surroundings (so-called "cognitive maps"), the ability to find novel shortcuts between familiar locations has been considered one of the most decisive proofs for the use of such maps. Here we show by channel-based field experiments that desert ants Cataglyphis can travel such shortcuts between locations (defined by memorized goal vectors) just on the basis of path integration. When trained to visit two spatially separated feeders A and B they

When the tap runs dry: the physiological effects of acute experimental dehydration in Peromyscus eremicus.

Desert organisms have evolved physiological, biochemical and genomic mechanisms to survive the extreme aridity of desert environments. Studying desert-adapted species provides a unique opportunity to investigate the survival strategies employed by organisms in some of the harshest habitats on Earth. Two of the primary challenges faced in desert environments are maintaining water balance and thermoregulation. We collected data in a simulated desert environment and a captive colony of cactus mice (Peromyscus eremicus) and used lab-based experiments with real time physiological measurements; ener

Distribution areas and monthly dynamic distribution changes of three Aedes species in China: Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus and Aedes vexans.

BACKGROUND: Mosquitoes play an absolute role in the spread of epidemic arbovirus diseases. Worldwide, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus are the main vectors responsible for the spread of these mosquito-borne diseases. Aedes vexans, a mosquito species native to China, also carries mosquito-borne viruses, such as dengue fever virus and Japanese encephalitis virus, but research on this mosquito has been inadequate. Mapping the potential distribution range of and monthly change in the distribution of these three Aedes species is of particular importance for mosquito surveillance, eradication and

Single surgeon coelioscopic orchiectomy of desert tortoises (Gopherus agassizii) for population management.

Orchiectomy in chelonians is a challenging procedure, especially in large species with deep and elongated testes and extensive mesorchial attachments. Single surgeon coelioscopic orchiectomy was performed in seven adult desert tortoises (Gopherus agassizii), maintained at the Desert Tortoise Conservation Center (DTCC) in Las Vegas, for population management. Surgery was successfully conducted through a bilateral prefemoral approach via sequential vascular clip ligation and radiosurgery (monopolar/bipolar). Bipolar endoscopic forceps were considered indispensable due to the extensive mesorchial

Hydroxyproline concentrations in ocular tissues of Arabian camel (Camelus dromedarius Linn.).

Hydroxyproline (Hyp) concentrations (total, free, peptide-bound and protein-bound) in camel eye tissues were determined. Total Hyp concentration was highest in iris, followed by ciliary body, sclera, cornea, lens and retina; the difference between total Hyp concentration of iris and sclera (P < 0.05) and cornea, lens and retina (P < 0.001) was statistically significant. Cornea had the highest concentration of free Hyp, followed by ciliary body, retina, iris, sclera and lens (P < 0.001). Peptide-bound Hyp concentration was highest in iris, followed by lens, cornea, ciliary body, retina and scle

Similar growth potentials of cyanobacteria and algae explain their coexistence in desert soils.

In deserts that cover one-third of the Earth's terrain, soil cyanobacteria and algae are key carbon dioxide (CO2) fixers because few other plants can tolerate intense solar radiation, prolonged desiccation, and extreme temperature shifts. Extensively studied resilience of cyanobacteria and algae to environmental stresses explains their survival in deserts rather than their ubiquitous coexistence. To coexist, prokaryotic cyanobacteria and eukaryotic algae need to grow at similar rates on rare occasions when vital water becomes available. To test that, we incubated illuminated soil samples colle

Co-application of polyethylene oxide (PEO), biochar, and seaweed fertilizer improves desert soil properties.

Improving water retention, erosion resistance and nutrients in desert areas is essential for ecological sustainability. This study evaluated the effects of biochar, polyethylene oxide (PEO), and seaweed fertilizer on the properties of desert sandy soil, focusing on water retention, erosion resistance, and soil nutrients. The sandy soil used in the study was taken from the Tengger Desert in Gansu, China, and an orthogonal experimental design was used to select three different proportions of biochar, PEO, and seaweed fertilizer. Compared with the control, applying of these three substances decre

Ecological aspects and relationships of the emblematic Vachellia spp. exposed to anthropic pressures and parasitism in natural hyper-arid ecosystems: ethnobotanical elements, morphology, and biological nitrogen fixation.

Emblematic Vachellia spp. naturally exposed to hyper-arid conditions, intensive grazing, and parasitism maintain a high nitrogen content and functional mutualistic nitrogen-fixing symbioses. AlUla region in Saudi Arabia has a rich history regarding mankind, local wildlife, and fertility islands suitable for leguminous species, such as the emblematic Vachellia spp. desert trees. In this region, we investigated the characteristics of desert legumes in two nature reserves (Sharaan and Madakhil), at one archaeological site (Hegra), and in open public domains et al. Small islands as potential model ecosystems for parasitology: climatic influence on parasites of feral cats.

The influence of climate on parasite distribution has been demonstrated in different regions worldwide. Despite its small size, Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain) constitutes a 'biodiversity laboratory' due to the huge climatic differences between municipalities. Feral cats may represent a threat to biodiversity due to their predatory behaviour. In addition, they may be a source of pathogens zoonotic to humans. To study the climatic/seasonal influence and prevalence of feral cat parasites throughout the island, a total of 290 stool samples from 29 feral cat colonies were analysed following s

Land use change and rodenticide exposure trump climate change as the biggest stressors to San Joaquin kit fox.

Animal and plant species often face multiple threats simultaneously. We explored the relative impact of three major threats on populations of the endangered San Joaquin kit fox. This species was once widely distributed across the southern San Joaquin Valley, California, USA, but agriculture and urban development have replaced much of its natural habitat. We modeled impacts of climate change, land-use change, and rodenticide exposure on kit fox populations using a spatially explicit, individual-based population model from 2000 to 2050 for the Central Valley, California. Our study indicates that

Human-induced biospheric carbon sink: Impact from the Taklamakan Afforestation Project.

The Taklamakan Desert, one of the world's largest and driest deserts, has traditionally been considered a biological void. Here, we demonstrate that large-scale ecological restoration is transforming this hyperarid environment into a carbon sink. By analyzing satellite and ground-based data, we find strong seasonal dynamics: During the wet season (Jul to Sep), precipitation increases to 16.3 mm/mo, enhancing vegetation coverage and photosynthetic activity and drawing down atmospheric CO2 by approximately three parts per million (ppm) relative to the dry-season levels. Long-term trends reveal s

Survival of microorganisms under the extreme conditions of the Atacama Desert.

Spores of Bacillus subtilis, conidia of Aspergillus niger, versicolor and ochraceus and cells of Deinococcus radiodurans have been exposed in the dark at two locations (at about 23 degrees S and 24 degrees S) in the Atacama Desert for up to 15 months. B. subtilis spores (survival approximately 15%) and A. niger conidia (survival approximately 30%) outlived the other species. The survival of the conidia and spores species was only slightly poorer than that of the corresponding laboratory controls. However, the Deinococcus radiodurans cells did not survive the desert exposure, because they are r

Depth-specific mechanisms regulate phosphorus cycling in dryland soils under long-term precipitation change.

Phosphorus (P) availability strongly constrains productivity in dryland ecosystems, yet how long-term precipitation change regulates P dynamics across soil depth intervals remains unclear. We combined an 8-year field precipitation manipulation experiment with sequential chemical fractionation and solution-state 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to investigate the distribution, molecular composition, and transformation of P in calcareous desert soils. Soil P cycling showed clear depth-dependent functional differentiation. Four major organic P (Po) compounds were resolved in the

Conducive circulation patterns and transport mechanisms for spring dust from Taklimakan Desert to the Tibetan Plateau.

Dust aerosols have an impact on both public health and environmental health. The Taklimakan Desert (TD) serves as a significant source of high-altitude airborne dust over the Tibetan Plateau (TP). However, systematic understanding of its transport mechanism requires further exploration beyond isolated case studies. This study effectively identified the atmospheric circulation patterns and transport mechanisms that facilitate airborne dust movement from TD to TP in the spring, utilizing an obliquely rotated principal component analysis alongside various reanalysis and satellite datasets. The fi

Exploring Bat-Virus Interactions: Insights from a Study in the Gobi Desert.

In May 2022, an expedition was conducted in the Gobi Desert, Mongolia, to investigate the viral diversity of bats, recognized as reservoirs of emerging zoonotic viruses. Bats were captured in six oases using mist nets and were identified morphologically and molecularly. Fecal samples were collected and screened using molecular protocol targeting viral agents of relevance to human and animal health, including coronaviruses, orthoreoviruses, herpesviruses, adenoviruses, flaviviruses, phleboviruses, paramyxoviruses, pestiviruses, and Influenza A viruses. In total, 74 bats were sampled. The most r

Ambient temperature and toxic diets constrain snake venom resistance in a desert rodent.

Variation in ambient temperature and food availability is commonplace in nature and likely exerts several types of eco-evolutionary pressures that mediate species' interactions. In predator-prey interactions between snakes and rodents, the molecular interface is formed by snake venom and mammalian venom resistance proteins. However, the abiotic factors modulating resistance are poorly understood. Here, we measured serum-based venom resistance of desert woodrats (Neotoma lepida) maintained at either cool or warm ambient temperatures and fed creosote bush resin (native diet) or a control diet. Desert dust improves the photophysiology of heat-stressed corals beyond iron.

Desert dust is an important source of essential metals for marine primary productivity, especially in oligotrophic systems surrounded by deserts, such as the Red Sea. However, there are very few studies on the effects of dust on reef-building corals and none on the response of corals to heat stress. We therefore supplied dust to two coral species (Stylophora pistillata and Turbinaria reniformis) kept under control conditions (26 °C) or heat stress (32 °C). Since dust releases large amounts of iron (Fe) in seawater, among other metals, the direct effect of different forms of Fe enrichment on co

Structure and function of the mammalian middle ear. I: Large middle ears in small desert mammals.

Many species of small desert mammals are known to have expanded auditory bullae. The ears of gerbils and heteromyids have been well described, but much less is known about the middle ear anatomy of other desert mammals. In this study, the middle ears of three gerbils (Meriones, Desmodillus and Gerbillurus), two jerboas (Jaculus) and two sengis (elephant-shrews: Macroscelides and Elephantulus) were examined and compared, using micro-computed tomography and light microscopy. Middle ear cavity expansion has occurred in members of all three groups, apparently in association with an essentially 'fr
