Language cannot be reduced to biology: perspectives from neuro-developmental disorders affecting language learning.

The study of language knowledge guided by a purely biological perspective prioritizes the study of syntax. The essential process of syntax is recursion--the ability to generate an infinite array of expressions from a limited set of elements. Researchers working within the biological perspective argue that this ability is possible only because of an innately specified genetic makeup that is specific to human beings. Such a view of language knowledge may be fully justified in discussions on biolinguistics, and in evolutionary biology. However, it is grossly inadequate in understanding language-l

Bridging MBD3 functions in developmental biology and glioma heterogeneity to immune remodeling with future perspectives.

Glioblastoma (GBM) remains one of the most lethal and treatment-refractory brain tumors, characterized by rapid recurrence and profound resistance to conventional therapies. The mechanisms underlying GBM resilience converge on two interdependent axes: intratumoral heterogeneity and adaptive tumor microenvironment (TME) remodeling, which engage in reciprocal crosstalk to promote immune evasion, invasion, and tumor persistence. Epigenetic regulation has emerged as a central determinant of tumor plasticity and cellular adaptability within this context. Methyl-CpG-binding domain protein 3 (MBD3),

From Zygote to Blastocyst: Application of Ultrashort Lasers in the Field of Assisted Reproduction and Developmental Biology.

Although the use of lasers in medical diagnosis and therapies, as well as in fundamental biomedical research is now almost routine, advanced laser sources and new laser-based methods continue to emerge. Due to the unique ability of ultrashort laser pulses to deposit energy into a microscopic volume in the bulk of a transparent material without disrupting the surrounding tissues, the ultrashort laser-based microsurgery of cells and subcellular components within structurally complex and fragile specimens such as embryos is becoming an important tool in developmental biology and reproductive medi

The Childhood Solid Tumor Network: A new resource for the developmental biology and oncology research communities.

Significant advances have been made over the past 25 years in our understanding of the most common adult solid tumors such as breast, colon, lung and prostate cancer. Much less is known about childhood solid tumors because they are rare and because they originate in developing organs during fetal development, childhood and adolescence. It can be very difficult to study the cellular origins of pediatric solid tumors in developing organs characterized by rapid proliferative expansion, growth factor signaling, developmental angiogenesis, programmed cell death, tissue reorganization and cell migra

Basic and applied problems in developmental biology and immunobiology of cestode infections: Hymenolepis, Taenia and Echinococcus.

Differentiation and development of parasites, including longevity in host animals, are thought to be governed by host-parasite interactions. In this review, several topics on the developmental biology of cestode infections are discussed from immunobiological perspective with a focus on Hymenolepis, Taenia and Echinococcus infections. The basic premise of this review is that 'differentiation and development of cestodes' are somehow affected by host immune responses with an evolutionary history.

Carryover effect of postpartum inflammatory diseases on developmental biology and fertility in lactating dairy cows.

The objective of this series of studies was to investigate the effects of inflammatory diseases occurring before breeding on the developmental biology and reproductive responses in dairy cows. Data from 5 studies were used to investigate different questions associating health status before breeding and reproductive responses. Health information for all studies was composed of the incidence of retained fetal membranes, metritis, mastitis, lameness, and respiratory and digestive problems from parturition until the day of breeding. Retained placenta and metritis were grouped as uterine disease (U

Unravelling the sexual developmental biology of Cystoisospora suis, a model for comparative coccidian parasite studies.

INTRODUCTION: The apicomplexan parasite Cystoisospora suis has global significance as an enteropathogen of suckling piglets. Its intricate life cycle entails a transition from an asexual phase to sexual development, ultimately leading to the formation of transmissible oocysts. METHODS: To advance our understanding of the parasite's cellular development, we complemented previous transcriptome studies by delving into the proteome profiles at five distinct time points of in vitro cultivation through LC/MS-MS analysis. RESULTS: A total of 1,324 proteins were identified in the in vitro developmen

The Special Developmental Biology of Craniofacial Tissues Enables the Understanding of Oral and Maxillofacial Physiology and Diseases.

Maxillofacial hard tissues have several differences compared to bones of other localizations of the human body. These could be due to the different embryological development of the jaw bones compared to the extracranial skeleton. In particular, the immigration of neuroectodermally differentiated cells of the cranial neural crest (CNC) plays an important role. These cells differ from the mesenchymal structures of the extracranial skeleton. In the ontogenesis of the jaw bones, the development via the intermediate stage of the pharyngeal arches is another special developmental feature. The aim of

Endocrine features and hormone-related pathways in Wilms' tumor: From developmental biology to clinical implications.

Wilms' tumor (WT) is the most common primary renal malignancy in children and it is a paradigmatic developmental kidney tumor arising from disrupted nephrogenesis. Classically framed as a developmental disorder of the nephron progenitor compartment, WT also exhibits clinically relevant endocrine features, most notably renin-mediated hypertension and, less commonly, selected paraneoplastic syndromes including Cushing syndrome, erythrocytosis, hypercalcemia, and acquired von Willebrand disease. Biochemically, atypical elevations of α-fetoprotein (AFP) and β-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-HCG) m

Mechanisms of Phenotypic Evolution from Molecules to Organisms: Integrating Evolutionary Biochemistry and Evolutionary Developmental Biology.

Evolutionary developmental biology (evo-devo) and evolutionary biochemistry share a common goal: to understand the causes of phenotypic evolution in terms of the mechanisms that translate genetic sequence information into developmental outcomes or the structure/function of macromolecules. Although dialog between the two fields has been limited, they share a common conceptual foundation and have converged upon many similar conclusions about the causes and dynamics of evolutionary change. By assessing major findings from both fields, we identify common properties of the genotype-phenotype relati

Distinctive spore architecture and developmental biology of Turicibacter sanguinis reveal unexpected diversity among gut spore formers.

Sporulation is a widespread but incompletely characterized trait among gut commensals, where it underpins microbial persistence, transmission, and ecological resilience. Most insights into spore biology derive from Bacilli and Clostridia; however, little is known about sporulation in phylogenetically distant gut-associated lineages. Turicibacter sanguinis, a strict anaerobe linked to host serotonin metabolism, lipid homeostasis, and neurodegenerative disease, represents one such understudied taxon. Here, we integrate ultrastructural, physiological, and comparative genomic analyses to define th

Predicting Gonadal Germ Cell Cancer in People with Disorders of Sex Development; Insights from Developmental Biology.

The risk of gonadal germ cell cancer (GGCC) is increased in selective subgroups, amongst others, defined patients with disorders of sex development (DSD). The increased risk is due to the presence of part of the Y chromosome, i.e., GonadoBlastoma on Y chromosome GBY region, as well as anatomical localization and degree of testicularization and maturation of the gonad. The latter specifically relates to the germ cells present being at risk when blocked in an embryonic stage of development. GGCC originates from either germ cell neoplasia in situ (testicular environment) or gonadoblastoma (ovaria

POU domain factors in the neuroendocrine system: lessons from developmental biology provide insights into human disease.

POU domain factors are transcriptional regulators characterized by a highly conserved DNA-binding domain referred to as the POU domain. The structure of the POU domain has been solved, facilitating the understanding of how these proteins bind to DNA and regulate transcription via complex protein-protein interactions. Several members of the POU domain family have been implicated in the control of development and function of the neuroendocrine system. Such roles have been most clearly established for Pit-1, which is required for formation of somatotropes, lactotropes, and thyrotropes in the ante

A systems biology approach to predictive developmental neurotoxicity of a larvicide used in the prevention of Zika virus transmission.

The need to prevent developmental brain disorders has led to an increased interest in efficient neurotoxicity testing. When an epidemic of microcephaly occurred in Brazil, Zika virus infection was soon identified as the likely culprit. However, the pathogenesis appeared to be complex, and a larvicide used to control mosquitoes responsible for transmission of the virus was soon suggested as an important causative factor. Yet, it is challenging to identify relevant and efficient tests that are also in line with ethical research defined by the 3Rs rule (Replacement, Reduction and Refinement). Esp

Influence of Orientia tsutsugamushi infection on the developmental biology of Leptotrombidium imphalum and Leptotrombidium chiangraiensis (Acari: Trombiculidae).

Leptotrombidium chiangraiensis Tanskul & Linthicum, and Leptotrombidium imphalum Vercammen-Grandjean are important vectors of scrub typhus in rice field habitats in northern Thailand. The developmental biology of all stages of the life cycle of two generations of these species of mites infected with Orientia tsutsugamushi (Hayashi) and uninfected mites is reported. The development of the infected lines of both F1 and F2 L. chiangraiensis were significantly longer than their respective uninfected lines (P < 0.05). The developmental times of uninfected and infected F1 lines of L. imphalum were n

Wingless signaling in a large insect, the blowfly Lucilia sericata: a beautiful example of evolutionary developmental biology.

Blowflies are the primary facultative agent in causing myiasis of domestic sheep in the whole world and, at the same time, it is an important tool for forensic medicine. Surprisingly, and in contrast to its importance, almost no data regarding the embryology and molecular markers are known for this insect. In this report, we present a detailed description of the blowfly Lucilia sericata embryogenesis and of imaginal disc development. The embryogenesis of Lucilia strongly resembles that of Drosophila, despite their apparent size difference. Moreover, imaginal disc development appears to be equa

Training biochemistry students in experimental developmental biology: Induction of cardia bifida formation in the chick embryo.

A high variety of experimental model organisms have been used in developmental biology practical lectures. The work with developing embryos is crucial to make students aware of the multiple biological phenomena underlying normal animal embryogenesis and morphogenesis and represent a unique experimental platform to analyze the impact of molecular signaling in the regulation of all these processes. In particular, Biochemistry undergraduate students enjoy both practical and theoretical lectures on the molecular mechanisms of embryonic development, as that allows them for the integration of crucia

Fetal Hox11 expression patterns predict defective target organs: a novel link between developmental biology and autoimmunity.

Developmental biology has long been ignored in the etiology and diverse manifestations of autoimmune diseases. Yet a role for development is suggested by intriguing overlaps in particular organs targeted in autoimmune diseases, in this case type 1 diabetes and Sjogren's syndrome. Patients with type 1 diabetes have high rates of co-occurring Sjogren's syndrome, and both conditions are associated with hearing loss and tongue abnormalities. All of these co-occurrences are found in organs tracing their lineage to the developmental transcription factor Hox11, which is expressed in embryonic cells d

The tuxedo sea urchin Mespilia globulus: A fast-developing and tractable model for genomic and developmental biology.

Sea urchins are pivotal models in cellular and developmental biology, but their biphasic life cycle with an extended larval life limits the ability to study post-metamorphosis and adult characters. Here, we introduce a genomically-enabled model system, the tuxedo urchin Mespilia globulus, which has rapid access to late life stages in sea urchins. We describe how we cultured M. globulus in a landlocked marine facility, raised larvae under artificial conditions and closed their life cycle. We established the experimental tractability of M. globulus: we labelled transcripts by hybridization chain
