Developmental defects of enamel are often reported as a feature of the more severe forms of epidermolysis bullosa (EB). The purpose of this investigation was to determine the prevalence and character of enamel defects in each of the major hereditary EB types. Clinical evaluations were made on 237 individuals representing all of the major EB types and 58 unaffected individuals. All EB cases were categorized by phenotype, mode of inheritance and skin biopsy. The frequency of individuals having developmental enamel defects ranged from 8.6% in recessive dystrophic EB to 100% in junctional EB; 27.5

Traumata to primary teeth occur very often in small children. The highest prevalence of developmental disturbances of permanent teeth after trauma to their predecessors has been recorded after intrusive injuries of primary teeth. In the present survey 47% of the recalled children had such developmental disturbances. The majority of developmental disturbances consisted of enamel hypoplasia (59%) which included discoloration, defects or a combination of both. In some cases the clinical feature of enamel defects could be diagnosed radiographically before tooth eruption. However, the total number

This investigation studied the dental health status of a group of 184 Australian Aboriginal children with a mean age of 4.4 +/- 0.8 years, who were attending pre-schools in metropolitan Brisbane, a non-fluoridated state capital city. The DDE (Developmental Defects of Enamel) Index was used to chart enamel hypoplasia and enamel opacities. WHO criteria was used to diagnose dental caries. The results showed that 98% of children had at least one tooth showing developmental enamel defects. Each child had a mean of 3.8 +/- 1.7 teeth affected by enamel hypoplasia and another 1.1 +/- 0.8 teeth affecte

Linear enamel hypoplasia is a developmental disturbance of enamel resulting in clinically visible horizontal defects in enamel that are present on eruption of the tooth. Nondevelopmental lesions of the hard tissues of the tooth, including carious, abrasion, erosion, attrition, and abfraction lesions, require varying amounts of time after tooth eruption to develop. Because linear enamel hypoplasia lesions are present on eruption and are exposed to the factors responsible for abrasion, erosion, and abfraction, nondevelopmental lesions could occur within them in any combination. BACKGROUND: Enamel hypoplasia is a developmental defect of enamel characterized by incomplete or defective enamel formation. It is often influenced by genetic, systemic, and environmental factors, including diet.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 200 children aged 6-12 years from urban and rural schools. Data were collected through structured dietary questionnaires and oral examinations to assess the presence and severity of enamel hypoplasia. Dietary intake was classified into groups based on sugar frequency, calcium-rich foods, and vitamin D levels. Enamel hypo

BACKGROUND: Enamel pits and enamel developmental defects have been reported in patients with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), but prevalence estimates and phenotypic descriptions vary widely. A standardized synthesis has been lacking. Recent updates in TSC clinical reviews and dermatologic-dental guidelines highlight the diagnostic relevance of subtle oral findings, underscoring the need for an updated synthesis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A systematic review with quantitative integration was conducted in accordance with PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Electronic databases were searched from inception to

The topographic relationship of the apices of the primary teeth to the permanent tooth germs explains the potential for possible developmental disturbances of the permanent teeth after injuries to their predecessors. The anatomical, histologic and clinical aspects of permanent tooth malformation following trauma to the primary teeth are described. One hundred and fourteen children with originally 255 traumatized primary teeth have been re-examined (with an average period of 5.1 years after the trauma) to assess any developmental disturbances of the corresponding permanent teeth. Japanese macaques are ideal to advance understanding of a wide-spread pattern of recurrent developmental distress in great apes, preserved as repetitive linear enamel hypoplasia (rLEH). Not only are they numerous, unendangered, and well-studied, but they are distributed from warm-temperate evergreen habitats in southern Japan to cool-temperate habitats in the north, where they are adapted behaviorally and phenotypically to winter cold and seasonal undernutrition. We provide a pilot study to determine if enamel hypoplasia exists in Japanese macaques from the north and, if temporal patterns of e

The prevalences of dental caries and developmental enamel defects were assessed in 643 randomly selected children aged 11 to 13 years who were lifelong residents of three areas of Naples with high (4 ppm), optimal (1 ppm), and low (0.3 ppm) concentrations of fluoride in their drinking water. The children living in the high fluoride area had significantly lower dental caries scores (DMFT 0.59, DMFS 1.01) than those in the optimal fluoride area (DMFT 1.67, DMFS 2.87) and those in the low fluoride area (DMFT 1.97, DMFS 3.48). The FDI index of developmental defects of dental enamel (DDE) was used

Developmental defects of enamel are structural alterations associated with changes during the stages of enamel formation and are frequently associated with the development of dental caries. These defects may increase dentinal sensitivity, impair esthetics, and lower self-esteem. Minimally invasive treatments are recommended approaches for managing these conditions, aiming to preserve the dental structure, especially in young patients. This case report of a 9-year-old boy with a developmental defect of enamel describes a noninvasive esthetic approach to treating enamel hypoplasia associated wit

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of enamel defects in the first permanent molars among children in Western Australia is higher than that reported for some European countries. The cause(s) of the defects, both white diffuse opacities and demarcated opacities, with or without hypoplasia, continue to be investigated. A recent review identified childhood illnesses and exposure to environmental toxins as putative causal factors for the occurrence of demarcated opacities (usually in association with hypoplasia). Diffuse opacities have been reported to be associated with exposure to the antibiotic amoxicil

BACKGROUND: Very low birth weight (VLBW) infants miss out on the period of greatest mineral accretion that occurs during the last trimester of pregnancy and are at higher risk of enamel defects. No studies have well described the relationship between neonatal nutrition and dental outcomes in preterm, VLBW infants. The objective of this study was to assess the differences in nutrition biomarkers, feeding intake, and comorbidities among VLBW infants with and without enamel defects.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of VLBW infants recruited for an ongoing longitudinal dental study between 2
