Generalization procedures in training interventionists for individuals with developmental disabilities.

The literature pertaining to training staff, parents, and peers to implement interventions for individuals with developmental disabilities was reviewed for training procedures that incorporated strategies to promote generalization. The search engines for the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis and Pubmed© were used to find relevant studies. Studies met the inclusion criteria if they sufficiently operationalized their training procedure, took data on individual trainees' performance, and used a single-subject experimental design. The training procedures were coded for generalization procedures

Nutrition and food skills education for adults with developmental disabilities.

PURPOSE: Individuals with developmental disabilities have poor eating habits and are at increased risk for cardiovascular disease, obesity, and osteoporosis. Needs and preferences for a nutrition education and foods skills program were explored in adults with developmental disabilities, agency managers, and support workers. METHODS: Twenty-eight adults with mild to moderate developmental disabilities participated in individual interviews; seven managers and 21 support workers took part in three focus group discussions. Concurrent data collection and analysis, data saturation, and a constant c

Bone density and fragility fractures in patients with developmental disabilities.

UNLABELLED: We investigated prior fractures, osteoporosis risk factors, and bone mineral density (BMD) in 107 institutionalized adults with developmental disabilities. We found a very high prevalence of BMD in the osteoporotic range and a significant correlation between lower BMD and prior fragility fractures. INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to investigate factors contributing to osteoporosis and fragility fractures among developmentally disabled adults. METHODS: Adults from a residential center participated in a prospective study in which bone mineral density (BMD) at the forear

Specific impairment in developmental reading disabilities: a working memory approach.

Children with developmental reading disabilities (RD) frequently display impaired working memory functioning. However, research has been divergent regarding the characteristics of the deficit. Our investigation addressed this controversy by assessing Baddeley's working memory model as a whole rather than focusing on particular aspects of it, as has been done by much of the research to date. Participants included 20 children with RD and 20 typical readers between the ages of 9 and 13. The phonological loop, visual-spatial sketchpad, and central executive were assessed according to Baddeley's mo

End-of-life care for a man with developmental disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Science can artificially maintain many essential life functions. Does such care prolong life or dying? METHODS: A case is described of a patient with developmental disability with unknown health care choices who was hospitalized for drug-resistant urosepsis. He developed aspiration pneumonia, deep vein thrombosis, and respiratory arrest. He required gastrostomy, tracheostomy, artificial ventilation, parenteral nutrition, hemodialysis, multiple anti-infective agents, and blood transfusions. On day 58, a bioethics committee recommended against cardiopulmonary resuscitation. On day 6

Teaching participants with developmental disabilities to comply with self-instructions.

Four adults with mild mental retardation were taught to sort based on what two pictures had in common and to name each object and common features of two pairs as well as to comply with a series of instructions to sort the pictures selectively. The criterion task was to inspect a sample pair, sort through a deck of 15 pictures to find those showing what the sample pair had in common, and to repeat a series of pairs. They failed this task and continued to fail even after a supposedly relevant self-instruction. After being taught to act on what they told themselves, they self-instructed correctly

Tactile defensiveness in children with developmental disabilities: responsiveness and habituation.

Tactile defensiveness (TD) is characterized by behaviors such as rubbing, scratching, negative expressions, withdrawal, or avoidance in response to tactile stimulation. An inhibition deficit has been implied in the literature and is the focus of this study. School-aged children with developmental disabilities were first assessed for level of TD using three measures. Later, the children were presented with a repeated tactile stimulus while engaged in a computer game. Intensity, duration, and latency of the responses were recorded on each trial. It was hypothesized that higher levels of TD would

Examining Support Networks Among Individuals With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

Understanding the support networks of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) is important given that adults with IDD are outliving their parents-i.e., their primary caregivers. We surveyed 601 adult siblings of individuals with IDD to identify: Who provides caregiving support to adults with IDD? Do the types of caregiving support vary in relation to the support network role? To what extent do individual, sibling, and family characteristics correlate with the size of the support network? On average, individuals with IDD possessed small support networks, with most sup

Acquisition of Digital Literacy Skills in Learners With Developmental Disabilities.

Learners with developmental disabilities often encounter difficulties in performing daily activities that involve digital platforms, operating systems, applications, and other digital tools. Considering the growing importance of digital literacy, we examined the effectiveness of the clustered forward chaining (CFC) procedure in teaching digital transaction skills to three adolescents with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). In the context of a multiple-baselines-across-skills design with between-participant replications, we taught participants four digital transaction tasks. The

Resilience research in learning disabilities: Guiding principles from developmental psychopathology.

BACKGROUND: The learning disabilities literature has had a long-standing focus on identifying risk factors that can inform diagnostic assessment and guide intervention efforts. While many existing conceptual models of learning disabilities have acknowledged the theoretical possibility of resilience mechanisms (Bishop & Snowling, 2004; Catts & Petscher, 2022; McGrath, Peterson, & Pennington, 2020; Pennington, 2006), few studies have empirically investigated such processes. However, more attention has been recently directed towards resilience mechanisms that may operate in the context of learnin

Reproductive healthcare in adolescents with autism and other developmental disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Adults with developmental disabilities often have less access to reproductive health services than adults without these disabilities. However, little is known about how adolescents with developmental disabilities, including autism, access reproductive healthcare. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to characterize the use of reproductive healthcare services among adolescents with autism and those with other developmental disabilities in comparison with adolescents with typical development. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a cohort study of a sample of adolescents who were continuously enrolled members

Promoting school readiness in children with developmental disabilities in LMICs.

The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) explicitly acknowledge inclusive and equitable quality education as the primary goal of any global initiatives for early childhood development for children under 5 years with developmental delays and disabilities. Primary education provides the foundation for lifelong learning, vocational attainment, and economically independent living. Globally, the majority (over 90%) of children with developmental disabilities reside in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). These children are significantly less likely to have foundational reading

Medical student program to learn from families experiencing developmental disabilities.

Patients and families experiencing developmental disabilities (DDs) may lack trust in physicians due to negative experiences in healthcare. DDs include conditions impairing physical, learning, language, or behavior areas, beginning during the developmental period and impacting daily functioning ('Developmental Disabilities'). Medical students generally do not receive standard training to effectively communicate with and diagnose patients with DDs. ARIE is a program for medical students to meet and learn from these patients and their families. Students learn about these families' experiences du
