BACKGROUND: There is experimental evidence that retinal blood flow is impaired in patients with diabetes mellitus. Much less attention has been paid to choroidal blood flow. Hence it was the aim of the present study to investigate choroidal blood flow in diabetic retinopathy.
METHODS: A new non-invasive laser interferometric technique was used to measure fundus pulsations in the macula. The fundus pulsation amplitude, which is the maximum distance change between cornea and retina during the cardiac cycle, is a measure of local pulsatile blood flow. The eyes (n = 214) were divided into four gr

The retinal changes associated with diabetes mellitus are a consequence of the systemic microangiopathy with modifications related to the intraocular environment. The vascular disorders underlying background retinopathy are arteriolar hyalinosis (which together with abnormalities in the circulating blood can give rise to focal capillary closure), venular dilatation, and capillaropathy in the form of pericyte degeneration, basement membrane thickening and microaneurysm formation. Retinal complications consist of plasma exudation and punctate haemorrhages. Maculopathy is due to cystoid oedema. I

Pars plana vitrectomy was used to treat 134 consecutive eyes with complications resulting from proliferative diabetic retinopathy, including nonabsorbing vitreous hemorrhage, recent traction and rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, progressive fibrovascular proliferation, and early rubeosis iridis with recent vitreous hemorrhage. Vision improved after surgery in 65% of the eyes, was unchanged in 16%, and decreased after surgery in 19%. In 24% of the successful cases, vision of 20/50 or better was achieved. When all posterior cortical vitreous was removed, no preretinal fibrovascular growth occur

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of preventable blindness in diabetes mellitus. Therefore, it is of interest to investigate the association between dyslipidemia and DR in 100 patients, divided into 50 with DR and 50 without DR. Lipid Abnormalities was found in 57% of participants, with a higher prevalence of DR in those with Lipid Abnormalities (35/57). The study also identified that the duration of diabetes significantly influenced DR development. Thus, a strong association between Lipid Abnormalities and DR, warranting further research on lipid-lowering interventions to prevent D

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the major ocular complication of diabetes mellitus, and is a problem with significant global health impact. Major advances in diagnostics, technology and treatment have already revolutionized how we manage DR in the early part of the 21st century. For example, the accessibility of imaging with optical coherence tomography, and the development of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) treatment are just some of the landmark developments that have shaped the DR landscape over the last few decades. Yet, there are still more exciting advances being made. Lookin

BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy is a common complication of diabetes and a leading cause of visual impairment and blindness. Research has established the importance of blood glucose control to prevent development and progression of the ocular complications of diabetes. Concurrent blood pressure control has been advocated for this purpose, but individual studies have reported varying conclusions regarding the effects of this intervention.
OBJECTIVES: To summarize the existing evidence regarding the effect of interventions to control blood pressure levels among diabetics on incidence and progr

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is an important complication of diabetes mellitus and a prevalent blind-causing ophthalmic disease. Despite years of efforts, rapid and accurate diagnosis of DR remains a challenging task. Metabolomics has been used as a diagnostic tool for disease progression and therapy monitoring. In this study, retinal tissues were collected from diabetic mice and age-matched non-diabetic mice. An unbiased metabolic profiling was performed to identify the altered metabolites and metabolic pathways in DR. 311 differential metabolites were identified between diabetic retinas and non

Diabetes is a chronic progressive metabolic disorder that is caused by the body's inability to regulate blood glucose levels. If uncontrolled, it can lead to various complications. Among its various complications, long-term diabetes leads to diabetic retinopathy (DR). It is a disease involving blood vessels and the destruction of retinal nerves. It is usually classified into two types: proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) and nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR). It progresses and causes loss of vision. The leading cause of loss of vision is diabetic macular edema (DME). The argon

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the leading cause of visual impairment in the working-age population of the Western world. The pathogenesis of DR is complex and several vascular, inflammatory, and neuronal mechanisms are involved. Inflammation mediates structural and molecular alterations associated with DR. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the inflammatory pathways associated with DR are not completely characterized. Previous studies indicate that tissue hypoxia and dysregulation of immune responses associated with diabetes mellitus can induce increased expression of numerous vitreou

Diabetic retinopathy (DR), a major microvascular complication of diabetes, has a significant impact on the world's health systems. Globally, the number of people with DR will grow from 126.6 million in 2010 to 191.0 million by 2030, and we estimate that the number with vision-threatening diabetic retinopathy (VTDR) will increase from 37.3 million to 56.3 million, if prompt action is not taken. Despite growing evidence documenting the effectiveness of routine DR screening and early treatment, DR frequently leads to poor visual functioning and represents the leading cause of blindness in working

PURPOSE: To determine the correlation between axial length and diabetic retinopathy (DR) in patients with diabetes mellitus for 10 years or more.
METHODS: This study was a prospective, observational, cross-sectional study. Patients with diabetes for 10 years or more were included. We excluded eyes with any other significant ocular disease or any prior intraocular surgery, except uncomplicated cataract surgery. Only one eye of each patient was included as the study eye. The severity of DR was graded as no DR, non-proliferative DR (NPDR), or proliferative DR (PDR). Axial length was measured by

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is involved in the pathogenesis of several diseases including Alzheimer disease and Parkinson disease. Many recent studies have shown that ER stress is related to the pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus, and with the death of pancreatic beta-cells, insulin resistance, and the death of the vascular cells in the retina. Diabetic retinopathy is a major complication of diabetes and results in death of both neural and vascular cells. Because the death of the neurons directly affects visual function, the precise mechanism causing the death of neurons in early diabetic
