Congenital diaphragmatic eventration (CDE) is a rare diaphragmatic abnormality. Clinical manifestations of CDE may mimic congenital diaphragmatic hernia. Prenatal differential diagnosis of eventration is critical because postnatal managing and prognosis of these conditions vary significantly. Sonographic features of CDE involve presence of abdominal organs in the thorax, shift of cardiac axis and mediastinum. Non-immune hydrops fetalis (NIHF) has been previously reported to be associated with intrathoracic masses as well as CDE. In this report, we present a case of congenital right diaphragmat

Diaphragmatic eventration is the upward displacement of the abdominal viscera secondary to a thin or paralytic diaphragm. Its clinical presentations and radiographic pictures are similar to those of diaphragmatic hernia. Prenatal diagnosis of diaphragmatic eventration is extremely rare. A pregnant woman was referred to us because of abnormal cardiac findings noted at 20 weeks of gestation. A diagnosis of partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection was made on the basis of our findings of right atrial enlargement with an abnormal vascular channel drainage to it. The infant was born via cesare

Numerous case reports in the literature have suggested a causal link between beta-haemolytic streptococcal infection and delayed-onset right-sided diaphragmatic hernia/eventration in the perinatal age group. We report a child with antenatally documented right diaphragmatic eventration 4 weeks before birth who subsequently developed a beta-haemolytic streptococcal infection in the neonatal period.

INTRODUCTION: Despite all the advances, the mortality rate of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) ranges from 30% to 60% for isolated CDH and as high as 89% when they are associated with additional structural or chromosomal anomalies. Hence, a study was conducted to evaluate the factors contributing to the mortality of neonates treated for CDH or the eventration of diaphragm.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted in the department of paediatric surgery at a tertiary centre. The neonates admitted with a diagnosis of CDH or eventration requiring surgery, between March 201

Background: To present a case series of children with eventration of diaphragm who underwent thoracoscopic repair highlighting the technical points and surgical modifications to prevent a recurrence. Settings and Design: This is an observational study of patients with diaphragmatic eventration admitted to a tertiary care institute. The study was designed following CARE guidelines endorsed by EQUATOR Network. Pediatric patients who had undergone thoracoscopic repair between January 2010 and March 2019 were included in the study. Materials and Methods: Age at surgery, gender, weight, site of the

PURPOSE: Diaphragmatic plication by minimally invasive surgery is thought to allow for a quick recovery and has been performed on small children. Here, we report our experience with different plication procedures to discuss how to choose among these different plication procedures in endoscopic surgery for pediatric patients with diaphragmatic eventration.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed clinical data of 27 pediatric patients (21 boys, 6 girls; median age: 12.7 months, range 2 months-3 years) admitted to our hospital between November 2008 and July 2013. Three different plicat

Tension pneumothorax complicating a pneumoperitoneum is a rare but known entity. However, all previously published articles report an air leak through defects in the diaphragm connecting the pneumoperitoneum and the pneumothorax. Here, the case of a 36-year-old man in whom the pneumoperitoneum acted like a tension pneumothorax because of a congenital eventration of the left diaphragm without penetration is presented. Emergency needle decompression of the abdomen was performed. A gastric ulcer that had passed through the diaphragm to the right lung was diagnosed intraoperatively. Unfortunately,

A 3-month-old male presented with a 2-month history of intermittent shortness of breath with chest retractions and wheezing which worsened with feeding. The patient was diagnosed with bronchiolitis during one of several hospital admissions and treated with bronchodilators without success. On the third hospitalization, the patient was diagnosed with right-sided diaphragmatic eventration. Surgical intervention consisted of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) with plication of the right diaphragm. The patient was discharged on the 2nd postoperative day. At the clinical visit 2 weeks posto

We describe an autopsy female case of multiple anomalies with lobulation of caudate nucleus tail, diaphragmatic eventration, skeletal anomalies, pyramidal tract anomaly, and meningothelial meningioma. Her psychomotor development was delayed, and she developed bilateral eventration of the diaphragms on X-ray film in her third decades. Right hemi-colonectomy was performed for volvulus at the age of 44 years, and meningioma was incidentally identified. She died at the age of 47 years. Autopsy demonstrated the partial deficiency of the muscular tissue in the circular thinned membranous area predom

We report herein the cases of two patients in whom the unusual association of a diaphragmatic hernia with eventration of the diaphragm on the same side were confirmed. Although various recognized patterns of malformations have been described in children with diaphragmatic defects or eventration, to the best of our knowledge, this association has never been reported before. Following our case reports, the literature on this unusual topic is reviewed and a discussion on the possible pathogenesis is presented.

Diaphragmatic eventration permanently raises all or part of the hemidiaphragm, thus impairing respiratory function by compressing the ipsilateral lung and mediastinum. A 55-year-old woman had cT1N0M0 lung adenocarcinoma in the right lower lobe and diaphragmatic eventration in the left hemithorax. We repaired the eventration to recover respiratory function, then performed a radical lobectomy with mediastinal lymph node dissection. Pathologically, the tumor was a well-differentiated acinar adenocarcinoma (pT1N0M0 stage IA). She was free from cancer and eventration 18 months later. This is the fi

Diaphragmatic eventration, both congenital and acquired, is defined as abnormal elevation of the diaphragm. We report 2 cases of adult symptomatic diaphragmatic eventration successfully treated by laparoscopic diaphragmatic resection with an endostaple. These cases were observed for more than 1 year with no complications or recurrence after surgery.

Introduction: Congenital diaphragmatic eventration (CDE) is defined as the abnormal elevation of the diaphragm, due to incomplete muscularization of the diaphragm with a thin membranous sheet replacing normal diaphragmatic muscle. Case report: We report a prenatal case with a diaphragmatic mesothelial cyst combined with CDE. Conclusion: A large cystic mass between the thoracic wall and the liver in early pregnancy is highly suggestive of cystic diaphragm.

Eventration of diaphragm is an abnormal elevation of diaphragmatic musculature while retaining normal attachments to the sternum, ribs and dorsolumber spine. It is a rare anomaly where the continuity of diaphragm remains intact. Pathological process can affect either all or only a portion of hemidiaphragm. Symptoms vary according to size of the defect. Large defect may mimic diaphragmatic hernia. The present case represents a full term female newborn that developed respiratory distress, cyanosis and feeding difficulties since 1st day of life. Clinical features and chest imaging of this case wa

We present a rare case of 32year old female with congenital diaphragmatic eventeration female presenting in an adult. She had symptoms of intermittent dyspnea and occasional epigastric discomfort. Patient had no previous history of trauma. Physical examination showed bowel sound involving the left hemithorax. Imaging modalities confirmed the diagnosis of a congenital left diaphragmatic eventeration. Patient underwent plication of the diaphragm using the abdominal approach. Intra-operatively, the left diaphragm was attenuated. Plication was done with 1st layer of imbricating silk heavy sutures

A congenital pulmonary malformation, such as pulmonary sequestration or congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation, should be suspected in infants with recurrent lower respiratory symptoms or unifocal infiltrations. The possibility of congenital pulmonary malformation associated with additional abnormalities, such as diaphragmatic hernia, is relatively high and can lead to misdiagnosis. We report a case of a 6-month-old girl who presented with relapsing respiratory infection and hematemesis. Computerized axial tomography scan and barium swallowing study were performed, revealing a suspected in

The Authors report the case of a fifty-nine-year-old patient, affected by complete eventration of the left diaphragm and cranial stomach dislocation with axial volvulus, associated with an upward movement of part of the left colon and some jejunal loops. The subclinical condition had been occasionally discovered during a routine chest X-ray at the age of eighteen and the patient remained without symptoms up to five years ago, when he began to show significant digestive and cardiorespiratory symptoms. The patient has been successfully treated via thoracotomy with phrenic alloplastic using Gore-

BACKGROUND: Chilaiditi's sign is an incidental radiographic finding, associated with intestinal disposition located between liver and right diaphragm. It is considered as an acquired rather than a congenital condition and the prevalence ranges from 1.18% to 2.4% according to recent adult retrospective studies. The aspects of this rare entity with regards to a 7-month-old male initially misdiagnosed as diaphragmatic hernia is discussed.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 4-month-old Caucasian male was misdiagnosed with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia owing to previous hospitalization with complaints of re
