Mothers' experiences of journaling during their infants' stay in a baby-friendly NICU: a hermeneutic phenomenological study.

BACKGROUND: The experience of mothers keeping a diary during their baby's stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) can be deeply significant, serving as a coping mechanism and a means of emotional expression. This study aimed to explore mothers' experiences during their infants' hospitalization in the NICU, as reflected in maternal diary entries, using a hermeneutic-phenomenological approach. METHODS: A hermeneutic phenomenological approach was employed to gain an in-depth understanding of mothers' experiences in the NICU. The participating mothers were asked to complete a one-page dia

Clinical factors associated with day-to-day peak pain severity in individuals with chronic migraine: A cohort study using daily prospective diary data.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the association between day-to-day peak pain severity and clinical factors in individuals with chronic migraine (CM). BACKGROUND: Little is known about how clinical factors relate to day-to-day pain severity in individuals with CM. METHODS: Adults with CM were enrolled into this observational prospective cohort study that collected daily data about headache, associated symptoms, and lifestyle factors using a digital health platform (N1-Headache™) for 90 days. "Migraine days" were defined as days in which a headache occurred that had features described by the Internatio

Development and Validation of the Parenting Skill Use Diary (PSUD) in a Nationally Representative Sample.

Objective: We describe the development and psychometric properties of an instrument designed to assess the use of effective parenting skills reported with a daily diary. The Parenting Skill Use Diary (PSUD) was developed iteratively relying on a "common elements" approach to quantify the use of evidence-based parenting techniques for responding to child misbehaviors and positive behaviors.Method: The PSUD was administered online daily for seven days to parents/guardians of children aged 5-12. The nationally representative sample (N = 1,570) was selected to match the US population of such paren

Finding peace of mind when there still is so much left undone-A diary study on how job stress, competence need satisfaction, and proactive work behavior contribute to work-related rumination during the weekend.

Unfinished work tasks have been identified as a significant job-related stressor in recent occupational stress research. Extending this research, we examine how and when not finishing one's tasks by the end of the work week affects work-related rumination at the weekend. Drawing on control theory, we examined competence need satisfaction as a mediating mechanism that links unfinished tasks at the end of the work week to work-related rumination at the weekend. Furthermore, we scrutinized whether proactive work behavior within the work week may neutralize the detrimental effects of unfinished ta

A diary-based approach to improve neuropsychiatric symptom assessment in dementia: A cross-sectional comparison with the neuropsychiatric inventory.

BackgroundNeuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) are among the most challenging manifestations of dementia. Currently available assessment tools often fail to fully capture their complexity. Thus, novel approaches are needed.ObjectiveThe present study aimed to explore the application of a diary-based assessment of NPS in patients with dementia attending a memory clinic and compare this novel approach with the Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) in terms of scores, time efficiency, and influence of potential confounders.MethodsAll consecutive outpatients with dementia and NPS attending the Center for Cog

Preliminary Validation of a Diary Approach to Monitor Daily Adolescent and Parental Predictors of Postoperative Recovery-A Longitudinal Diary Study in Adolescents Undergoing Spinal Fusion Surgery.

BACKGROUND: About 1 in 5 adolescents undergoing major surgery develops chronic postsurgical pain. Various risk and resilience factors for recovery and chronic postsurgical pain have been identified, including parental characteristics. However, research commonly relies on nomothetic data, whereas psychometric properties of diaries assessing pediatric postsurgical recovery in everyday life are understudied. This study aimed to evaluate preliminary reliability, validity, and variability of diary data in adolescents and their parents after spinal fusion surgery. METHODS: Adolescents with idiopath

Alcohol Use Predicts Longer But More Fragmented Sleep: A Daily Diary Study of Alcohol, Sleep, and PTSD in Nurses.

BACKGROUND: Due to the demanding nature of their profession, nurses are at risk of experiencing irregular sleep patterns, substance use, and fatigue. Evidence supports a reciprocal relationship between alcohol use and sleep disturbances; however, no research has examined such a link in a sample of nurses. One factor that may further impact the dynamic between alcohol and sleep patterns is posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. We investigated the daily bidirectional associations between alcohol use and several sleep domains (i.e., self-report and actigraphy-determined sleep), and moder

Delgocitinib 2% cream: a promising FDA-approved therapy for moderate-to-severe chronic hand eczema.

Delgocitinib 2% cream (Anzupgo®) is the first U.S. FDA-approved topical Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor for moderate-to-severe chronic hand eczema (CHE) in adults unresponsive to or unsuitable for topical corticosteroids. CHE is a multifactorial condition with significant quality-of-life impact and limited effective treatment options. Delgocitinib non-selectively inhibits JAK1, JAK2, JAK3, and TYK2, suppressing inflammatory cytokines including IFN-γ, IL-4, IL-13, IL-17A, and IL-22. Phase III randomized, double-blind, vehicle-controlled trials demonstrated a treatment success rate of up to 37.7% a

Actigraphy in post traumatic stress disorder.

UNLABELLED: Patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) frequently complain of sleep disturbances such as insomnia and nightmares. Evaluation of sleep disturbances is often difficult due to the subjective nature of the complaints. Polysomnography (PSG) and other sleep studies are generally not indicated in the evaluation of insomnia or nightmares associated with PTSD. Actigraphy, (electronic activity monitoring) has been used in research to evaluate sleep disturbances in patients with PTSD. We reviewed the literature on the use of actigraphy in evaluation of sleep problems in patients w

Impact of early nurse-led implementation of an intensive care unit diary following major trauma on quality of life: The QUALITRAU randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Survivors of major trauma often experience long-term impairments in health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Intensive care unit (ICU) diaries have been proposed to reduce psychological sequelae, but evidence remains conflicting and not specific to trauma patients. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether, in patients with major trauma, a nurse-led ICU diary implemented within the first 48 h after trauma improves HRQoL at 1 year vs. usual care. METHODS: The QUALITRAU randomized controlled trial was conducted in three ICUs of a French tertiary hospital

The acceptability and usefulness of ambulatory assessment: A large-scale investigation of a daily diary study with 2,816 adults.

Despite the popularity of ambulatory assessment (AA), few studies have investigated how participants experience and perceive their participation, including the burdensomeness and utility of AA. This is important, as participants' experience in the measurement process can directly impact participants' well-being and data quality. In a 40-day diary study involving 2,816 individuals, participants reported their experience of the measurement process (acceptability) with six self-report items. We further investigated the demographic difference in acceptability using seemingly unrelated regression a

Application of ICU electronic diary platform based on co-design concept in Chinese critically ill patients: a mixed methods study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Critically ill patients are at a heightened risk for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). While the intensive care unit (ICU) diary has been shown to improve the mental health and quality of life of ICU patients, the handwritten version still has some limitations such as a lack of support for multimedia content and writing by remote family members, as well as being time-consuming and labour-intensive. We hypothesise that constructing an ICU electronic diary platform based on a co-design approach and verifying its applicability could alleviate these limitations, making the ICU d

Assessing effects of personal behaviors and environmental exposure on asthma episodes: a diary-based approach.

BACKGROUND: Quantifying the effects of personal health behaviors and environmental exposure on asthma flare-ups is a challenge. Most studies have focused on monitoring the symptoms and drug usage for relieving symptoms. In this study, we emphasize the need to understand how personal and environmental conditions are related to the occurrence of asthma symptoms. METHODS: We designed an online health diary platform to collect personal health behaviors from children, their parents and other adults with any allergic diseases including asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis and allergic conju

The psychological health benefits of accepting negative emotions and thoughts: Laboratory, diary, and longitudinal evidence.

Individuals differ in the degree to which they tend to habitually accept their emotions and thoughts without judging them-a process here referred to as habitual acceptance. Acceptance has been linked with greater psychological health, which we propose may be due to the role acceptance plays in negative emotional responses to stressors: acceptance helps keep individuals from reacting to-and thus exacerbating-their negative mental experiences. Over time, experiencing lower negative emotion should promote psychological health. To test these hypotheses, Study 1 (N = 1,003) verified that habitually

Study on "Atypical" Migraine Auras in the Pediatric Age: The Role of Cortical Spreading Depression and the Physiopathogenetic Hypothesis Arising from Our Clinical Cases.

Migraine is a complex neurologic disorder by which several systems of the central nervous system (autonomous system, affective, cognitive, sensory and motor system) may be affected on different levels. About a fourth of migraine patients have migraine auras. The most common aura is the visual aura followed by the sensorial aura but motor deficits, as well as deficits of higher cortical centers (disorders of thinking, orientation, coherence, or concentration), may occur as well. In analogy with a headache diary, an aura diary can deliver important help in the diagnostic process of rare migraine

[Intranasal azelastine in the treatment of perennial allergic rhinitis in children].

Twenty-five patients (5-15 years old) with perennial allergic rhinitis (PAR) for at least one year were treated with intranasal azelastine. The study was conducted in two separate occasions. In the first study, in a special prepared room, the patients underwent Active Anterior Rhinomanometry (AAR). Twenty minutes later, after 2 drops of saline installed in each nostril, the Total Nasal Resistance (TNR) and Total Nasal Conductance (TNC) were measured. This was followed by the intranasal application of azelastine (0.14 mg/nostril ) and the TNR and TNC were measured at 15,30,60,90 and 120 minutes

Comparison of the efficacy and tolerability of topical levocabastine and sodium cromoglycate in the treatment of seasonal allergic rhinoconjunctivitis in children.

Children (n = 110) with seasonal allergic rhinoconjunctivitis were randomized to receive either twice daily 0.05% levocabastine eye drops and nasal spray plus twice daily topical placebos or 2% sodium cromoglycate eye drops and nasal spray four times daily for a period of 4 weeks. Patients were required to use the nasal sprays as directed and the eye drops only when required. The results obtained suggest that topical levocabastine is at least as effective as sodium cromoglycate for the treatment of this condition. After 2 weeks treatment the effect of therapy on nasal symptoms was considered t

Patient journey following lumbar discectomy surgery: protocol for a single-centre qualitative analysis of the patient rehabilitation experience (DiscJourn).

IntroductionLumbar discectomy is a widely used surgical procedure internationally with the majority of patients experiencing significant benefit. However, approximately 20% of patients report suboptimal functional recovery and quality of life. The impact and meaning of the surgical experience from the patients' perspective are not fully understood. Furthermore, there is limited evidence guiding postoperative management with significant clinical practice variation and it is unclear if current postoperative support is valued, beneficial or meets patients' needs and expectations. This study aims
