On the basis of meat inspection in an abattoir in the eastern part of Switzerland, the incidence of liverflukes in cattle was recorded weekly during one year. The prevalence was compared with surveys from the seventies and nineties. The average incidence of Dicrocoelium dendriticum infection did not change. Although the prevalence of Fasciola hepatica apparently slightly decreased, an actual decrease of liverflukes could not be demonstrated.

Dicrocoelium dendriticum is a common zoonotic parasite of sheep in many Regions of Saudi Arabia. In chronic infections, this parasite causes biliary cirrhosis in livers of cattle, sheep, or goats and leads to economic losses. This study compared the prevalence of Dicrocoelium dendriticum in local sheep and imported sheep in Taif Province, West Saudi Arabia. This cross-sectional survey was carried out in slaughterhouses in Taif Province. A total 2230 local sheep and 21383 imported sheep were studied. The number of injury in imported sheep was observed as 99 representing 0.46% of the number of a

This work describes the first ultrastructural results on spermiogenesis and on the mature spermatozoon of Dicrocoelium hospes (Trematoda, Digenea) collected in Bos indicus from Senegal (Africa). Examination of this species was processed by TEM. Spermiogenesis follows the general pattern found in the digenean, but reveals a particularity consisting of the appearance of glycogen granules in the late spermatids within the testes. The mature spermatozoon possesses five distinct regions and presents all features found in Digenea gametes: two axonemes, mitochondria, nucleus and parallel cortical mic

In the present study we report the presence of acetylcholinesterase activity and gamma-aminobutyric acid binding sites in crude extracts of Dicrocoelium dendriticum. This indirectly demonstrates the presence of acetylcholine and GABA. The presence of these neurotransmitters could indicate the existence of two systems implicated in the neurotransmission of the Digenea.

The lancet fluke is a common parasite in Swiss sheep and cattle. From 1976 to 1980, 77 patients were found to have eggs of D. dendriticum in the stool. No genuine human infection could be diagnosed, and in all patients the coprologic finding of D. dendriticum eggs had to be considered the result of spurious infections due to the consumption of infected livers. The annual incidence of stool specimens positive for D. dendriticum eggs was between 0.20 and 0.38%.

DNA primers were designed from the 18S rRNA sequence from the relevant digenean trematode Dicrocoelium dendriticum to evaluate a polymerase chain reaction-based diagnostic method of this parasite from its eggs in faeces of naturally and experimentally infected sheep. In order to get DNA from D. dendriticum eggs, several hatching mechanisms were studied. Successful results were obtained when the eggs were frozen to -80 °C and/or in liquid nitrogen and then defrosted. This method allowed the opening of the egg operculum and the liberation of the miracidium. DNA from D. dendriticum adults and fro

BACKGROUND: Dicrocoeliasis is an important helminthic zoonosis reported from many parts of the world. Due to low-performance medications, drug delivery is a great challenge in improving the treatment of this liver fluke infection. We aimed to determine the anthelmintic properties of Nanosilver oxide (AgO) against Dicrocoelium dendriticum infection.
METHODS: The impacts of various concentrations of AgO nanoparticles (50-200 μg/ml) for 12-24 hours were compared with closantel, a chemical drug. The anthelmintic efficacy was evaluated using the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique. The sy

INTRODUCTION: Fascioliasis and dicrocoeliasis are the most frequent zoonotic diseases with increasing human health problems in different parts of Iran. Two species, Fasciola hepatica (F. hepatica) and Fasciola gigantica (F. gigantica), are spread in the country. Molecular approaches have a decisive role in identifying both the species. The aim of this study was to detect Fasciola spp. and Dicrocoelium spp. by amplifying the ITS-2 and 28S rDNA gene sequence.
METHODS: Overall, 30 infected liver samples were collected from the livestock of Qazvin, Iran. The adult flukes were collected from diffe

Genetic variability of adult specimens of Dicrocoelium dendriticum has been studied using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD). The worms were collected from the infected livers of different sheep from several localities in León province (NW Spain). DNA fragments were amplified by means of decamer primer oligonucleotides of arbitrary sequence. Some primers produce complex and highly variable patterns of amplified DNA in D. dendriticum. Intra- and inter-population genetic variability of adult parasites were analyzed, scoring polymorphic and monomorphic reproducible bands by means of the Jacc

Dicrocoelium dendriticum is a globally distributed trematode that infects the bile ducts of ruminants and causes dicrocoeliasis, leading to economic losses in livestock production. Despite favorable ecological conditions, its presence in cattle had not previously reported in Palestine. This short communication reports the first detection and characterization of D. dendriticum in cattle from the West Bank, Palestine. Adult flukes were recovered from bile ducts during routine post-mortem inspection at Al-Bireh slaughterhouse and identified based on morphological characteristics. Molecular confir

Dicrocoeliosis is a trematode infection in cattle, sheep and goats caused by the small liver fluke, Dicrocoelium spp. Though endemic in Ghana, its disease situation is poorly understood. In the present study, the prevalence, distribution and worm load of Dicrocoelium spp. in cattle at slaughter in Wa were determined. A total of 389 cattle were screened during meat inspection for liver flukes, and polymerase chain reaction accompanied by DNA sequencing of the 28S rRNA gene was used to identify Dicrocoelium spp. Generally, prevalence of bovine dicrocoeliosis (small liver fluke) stood at 19.54 %

The larval development of Dicrocoelium dendriticum (Digenea: Dicrocoeliidae) in experimentally infected Cernuella (Xeromagna) cespitum arigonis (Schmidt, 1853), a species of mollusc important in the epidemiology of dicrocoeliosis in Spain, has been studied. A total of 948 specimens of this mollusc, distributed in five batches, were tested with individual doses of 50 to 150 parasite eggs, obtained from sheep, after 4 days without food. After infection these molluscs and control specimens were kept in an environmental simulation chamber at 20 degrees C, 50% relative humidity and 7 h of light per

Bile samples, from slaughtered cattle harbouring between 120 and 280 adult lancet flukes, were used to investigate the range of somatic proteins inducing local antibody responses in naturally infected animals. Lancet fluke infections induced local (bile) antibody responses against Tris-buffered saline (TBS) soluble, sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) soluble and 2-mercaptoethanol (2-Me) soluble somatic proteins of adult Dicrocoelium dendriticum. IgA antibody isotypes predominated in the response against buffer-soluble somatic antigens, whereas SDS-soluble and 2-Me-soluble proteins induced similar l

Epidemiological rate parameters of host generalist parasites are difficult to estimate, especially in cases where variation in parasite performance can be attributed to host species. Such cases are likely common for generalist parasites of sympatric grazing mammals. In this study, we combined data from experimental exposures in cattle and sheep and natural infections in elk to compare the recruitment, morphology and reproduction of adult Dicrocoelium dendriticum, a generalist trematode that has emerged in sympatric grazing hosts in Cypress Hills Provincial Park, Alberta. Overall, there were no

Dicrocoeliosis, caused by Dicrocoelium dendriticum, is an important hepatic parasitosis in ruminants, whose immunological diagnosis and control remain unsatisfactory. There are very few studies on the antigens of this trematode and molecular knowledge about it is practically nil. Therefore the aim of this study was to identify the major antigenic proteins in the tegument (TG) and excretory-secretory (ES) antigenic extracts of D. dendriticum. The separation conditions of the protein extracts were optimized using 2-D PAGE; the gels were stained with colloidal Coomassie or transferred to carry ou
