PURPOSE: Dientamoeba fragilis (D. fragilis) is a common intestinal protozoan with a global distribution. In the present study, we aimed to determine genetic diversity of D. fragilis isolates with multilocus sequence typing (MLST) in the southwest of Turkey and analyse the clinical findings.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included faecal samples from 200 individuals in Aydin, Turkey. The positivity of D. fragilis was determined with 18 S rRNA gene-based PCR assay. Six nested-PCR reactions were set to amplify partial D. fragilis housekeeping genes in the positive samples. The sequences were a

The protozoan Dientamoeba fragilis is one of the most common parasites in the digestive system of humans worldwide. The host range and transmission routes of D. fragilis, including the role of animals, are still ambiguous with few reports from non-human primates, sheep, rodents, pigs, a cat and a dog. In this study, we used microscopic and TaqMan qPCR analyses to investigate D. fragilisin 150 faecal samples from pet budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) in the Central Anatolia Region of Turkey. Dientamoeba fragilis DNA was detected in 32 samples, resulting in a mean prevalence of 21.3%. In mic

Dientamoeba fragilis is a pathogenic trichomonad found in the gastrointestinal tract of humans and is implicated as a cause of diarrhoea. Despite its discovery over a century ago, there has been no recent thorough description of this parasite by microscopy. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, confocal and light microscopy were therefore used to characterise D. fragilis populations growing in xenic culture. Two different populations - smooth and ruffled cells - were identifiable by scanning electron microscopy. No flagella, pelta structures, undulating membrane or ps

The intestinal protozoon Dientamoeba fragilis remains a clinical entity of dubious significance. While several previous studies address questions of epidemiology, only a handful have systematically employed and reported on the results from real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), the best currently available diagnostic modality, and the comparison of results from different studies is, therefore, difficult. Since 2007, Statens Serum Institut (Denmark) has utilised qPCR for D. fragilis as routine diagnostic work-up for intestinal parasitosis, testing more than 22,000 samples from 2008 through

In most developing countries, Dientamoeba fragilis infection is an obscure protozoan infection. We aimed to determine a frequency and clinical importance of D. fragilis infection in Taif, Saudi Arabia. A 1-year case control study included patients with gastrointestinal (cases, n=114) or non-gastrointestinal symptoms (controls, n=90). The fecal samples were examined with the classical parasitological methods for intestinal protozoa, and by real time PCR for D. fragilis. The infection by D. fragilis was detected in 5.8% by PCR and in 4.4% patients by microscopy. The infection was identified more

BackgroundDespite the global distribution of the intestinal protozoan Dientamoeba fragilis, its clinical picture remains unclear. This results from underdiagnosis: microscopic screening methods either lack sensitivity (wet preparation) or fail to reveal Dientamoeba (formalin-fixed sample).AimIn a retrospective study setting, we characterised the clinical picture of dientamoebiasis and compared it with giardiasis. In addition, we evaluated an improved approach to formalin-fixed samples for suitability in Dientamoeba diagnostics.MethodsThis study comprised four parts: (i) a descriptive part scru

The actual role of Dientamoeba fragilis and Blastocystis in patients with gastrointestinal symptoms is still under debate. A multicenter case-control study was performed in The Netherlands to elucidate the clinical relevance of molecular diagnostics results in gastroenteritis (GE). Samples from this case-control study were used to perform a detailed analysis on the presence of D. fragilis and Blastocystis in relation to gastrointestinal symptoms. In the present study, a real-time PCR for Blastocystis was performed on 1374 case samples and 1026 control samples from the multicenter gastroenterit

Dientamoeba fragilis, a common intestinal protozoan parasite in Canada, has been associated with diarrhoea and abdominal pain in some patients. Seroprevalence of this organism has not been reported previously. In the present study sera from three symptomatic patients, 12 age- and sex-matched controls, and 189 randomly selected healthy individuals (age 6 months to 19 years) were tested for antibodies against Dientamoeba fragilis by an indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) assay. All three symptomatic patients infected with Dientamoeba fragilis had positive IIF titres of 80, and all 12 matched contr

The protozoan parasite Dientamoeba fragilis is a frequently isolated stool organism and postulated cause of gastrointestinal symptoms. Peripheral blood eosinophilia has been described. This is the first study amongst the Australasian adult population to assess the relationship between organism detection and eosinophilia. A case-control study took place over 7 years at a single Sydney laboratory site, evaluating patients with D. fragilis identified on stool using real-time PCR with a recent full blood count, to control groups with Giardia spp. and sequential negatives with neither organism. Blastocystis sp. and Dientamoeba fragilis are intestinal protists, which are common worldwide, but the pathogenic role of these organisms in gastrointestinal diseases is still controversial. This study aimed to investigate the frequency of Blastocystis sp. and D. fragilis in stool samples from adult patients with celiac disease (CD) by using conventional and molecular methods. A total of 75 patients with CD and 75 healthy individuals were included in this study. Fresh stool specimens collected from each individual were analyzed by conventional and molecular methods. The overall prevalence of B

Dientamoeba fragilis is a cosmopolitan intestinal protist colonizing the human gut with varying prevalence depending on the cohort studied and the diagnostic methods used. Its role in human health remains unclear mainly due to the very sporadic number of cross-sectional studies in gut-healthy populations. The main objective of this study was to expand knowledge of the epidemiology of D. fragilis in gut-healthy humans and their animals. A total of 296 stool samples from humans and 135 samples from 18 animal species were analyzed. Using qPCR, a prevalence of 24% was found in humans in contrast t

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is globally one of the most prevalent gastrointestinal disorders with a negative impact on quality of life and socio-economic status of patients. Recently, controversial evidences suggest that Blastocystis sp. and Dientamoeba fragilis infections may be implicated in the development of IBS. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the possible association regarding this issue. PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane electronic databases were searched (up to February 2017) to identify the relevant studies. Pooled odds ratio

Dientamoeba fragilis is a protozoan with a debated role in gastrointestinal (GI) disease. Although correlated to GI symptoms, no virulence factors have been described. In this study, we evaluated the cause of GI symptoms in children at two schools, with children aged 1 to 10 years, in the county of Jönköping, Sweden. D. fragilis infection correlated to GI symptoms in children and Enterobius vermicularis correlated to D. fragilis infection.

Dientamoeba fragilis is a protozoan parasite of the human large intestine which is implicated as a cause of gastrointestinal diseases. The diagnosis of this parasite in direct smear preparations is difficult due to the lack of a cyst stage. The permanent staining method is generally used for diagnosis of D. fragilis, but the technique is laborious and time consuming. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of PCR for detection of D. fragilis in clinical specimen of health care center in Tabriz, northwest of Iran. Stool samples of 1000 patients were collected from different la

In two new attempts to infect human subjects with pin-worms that were infested, at that time, with protozoa Dientamoeba fragilis, presence of these protoza in the intestinal canal was observed in one case for more than 84 days, and in another case for more than 31 days after contamination. The duration of latent periods fixed for Enterobius vermicularis was almost identical (51 and 50 days). New attempts implement and confirm the results of the first successful attempts to transfer the infection (Ockert, 1972b) as well as the hypothesis of the epidemiological interrelation between both parasit

Dientamoeba fragilis transmission is a basic aspect of this intestinal parasite's biology that is poorly understood. Early historical reports reflecting the absence of a cyst are often cited as a central argument in debates supporting the lack of a D. fragilis cyst. While D. fragilis cysts have been described since Dobell's original description, their existence is not universally accepted. Here, Dobell's, Wenyon's and Hoare's collection of historical faecal smears stored at the Natural History Museum (London), dating back to the 1890s and the early 1900s, was examined for forms consistent with
