Diet and acne: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Acne vulgaris is a common cutaneous disorder. Diet and metabolism, specifically glycemic content and dairy, influence hormones such as insulin, insulin-like growth factor 1, and androgens, which affect acnegenesis. OBJECTIVE: To systematically review high-quality evidence regarding the association of dietary glycemic and dairy intake with acnegenesis. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search, without timeline restriction, of MEDLINE (completed between October and November 2021) for English-language papers that examined the association between diet and acne was conducted. The ev

High Carbohydrate Diet Increased Glucose Transporter Protein Levels in Jejunum but Did Not Lead to Enhanced Post-Exercise Skeletal Muscle Glycogen Recovery.

We examined the effect of dietary carbohydrate intake on post-exercise glycogen recovery. Male Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) mice were fed moderate-carbohydrate chow (MCHO, 50%cal from carbohydrate) or high-carbohydrate chow (HCHO, 70%cal from carbohydrate) for 10 days. They then ran on a treadmill at 25 m/min for 60 min and administered an oral glucose solution (1.5 mg/g body weight). Compared to the MCHO group, the HCHO group showed significantly higher sodium-D-glucose co-transporter 1 protein levels in the brush border membrane fraction (p = 0.003) and the glucose transporter 2 level

Association between dietary glycemic index and glycemic load and glioma: a case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: Although glycemic index (GI) and load (GL) have been linked with several health outcomes, no information is available linking dietary GI and GL with glioma. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between dietary GI and GL and odds of glioma. METHODS: This hospital-based case-control study was conducted between November 2009 and September 2011 in the hospital affiliated to Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences. We recruited 128 newly diagnosed cases of glioma and 256 age- and sex-matched controls. All cases were pathologically diagnosed with glioma patients, with

Associations of dietary and physical activity behaviors with handgrip strength in middle-aged and older adults: a prospective cohort study.

Data regarding the association between dietary behaviors and handgrip strength (HS) are limited. The current study aimed to evaluate the hypothesis that dietary patterns, eating behaviors, and physical activity are associated with HS measured in later life. The study used data of 2,615 Korean adults (1,101 men and 1,514 women aged 43-74 years) without sarcopenia, who participated in a population-based prospective cohort study and completed questionnaire-based interviews and health examinations during the period of 2005 - 2014. Baseline (year 2005 - 2006) information on eating behaviors and phy

The effect of aging on carbohydrate metabolism: a review of the English literature and a practical approach to the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus in the elderly.

There seems little doubt that the disposal of a glucose load is progressively impaired during aging. The mechanism(s) for this alteration remains unclear. Five possibilities have been raised: (1) poor diet, (2) physical inactivity, (3) decreased lean body mass in which to store the carbohydrate load, (4) decreased insulin secretion, and (5) insulin antagonism. Although poor diet and physical inactivity may contribute to some of the abnormal glucose tolerance tests of the older population, these two factors do not provide a full explanation. Diminished lean body mass may play some role but ther

[Nutrition and metabolic syndrome].

Sufficient evidence exists in relation to the association in clinical practice between disorders in the metabolism of glucose, lipoproteins, insulin action, arterial hypertension and centrally-distributed obesity. This association is named Metabolic Syndrome. Despite the existence thereof had been questioned by the ADA and EASD, it is a useful tool affording the possibility of identifying individuals at high risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Metabolic syndrome and/or its individual components are associated with a high incidence rate of cardiovascular disease. Obesity and a sedentary

Associations between central obesity and indexes of hemostatic, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. Results of a 1-year intervention from the Oslo Diet and Exercise Study.

The relationships of central obesity and physical fitness to indexes of hemostatic, lipid and glucose metabolism both at baseline and after 1 year of diet and exercise intervention were examined in 209 sedentary middle-aged men and women with increased coronary risk factor levels. Central obesity was measured as either waist circumference or waist/hip ratio. Maximal oxygen uptake was used as a measure of physical fitness. The cross-sectional results show that there were significant correlations between waist circumference and euglobuline clot lysis time (r = 0.23), factor VII (r = 0.16), gluco

Gut Microbiota Induced by Pterostilbene and Resveratrol in High-Fat-High-Fructose Fed Rats: Putative Role in Steatohepatitis Onset.

Resveratrol and its 2-methoxy derivative pterostilbene are two phenolic compounds that occur in foodstuffs and feature hepato-protective effects. This study is devoted to analysing and comparing the metabolic effects of pterostilbene and resveratrol on gut microbiota composition in rats displaying NAFLD induced by a diet rich in saturated fat and fructose. The associations among changes induced by both phenolic compounds in liver status and those induced in gut microbiota composition were also analysed. For this purpose, fifty Wistar rats were distributed in five experimental groups: a group o

The Role of the Glycemic Index and Glycemic Load in the Dietary Approach of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common metabolic disorder that often develops during pregnancy, characterized by glucose intolerance and insulin resistance (IR). To ensure the well-being of both the mother and the fetus, the body undergoes multiple metabolic and immunological changes that result in peripheral IR and, under certain hereditary or acquired abnormalities, GDM in predisposed women. The adverse short- and long-term effects of GDM impact both the mother and the fetus. Nutrition seems to play an important role to prevent GDM or improve its evolution. An emphasis has been give

Effect of dietary sucrose on the SHR/N-corpulent rat: a new model for insulin-independent diabetes.

A new congenic strain of genetically obese rat, SHR/N-corpulent (cp), was studied. Young male corpulent (cp/cp) and lean (cp/+ or +/+) rats approximately 5 wk of age were fed a diet containing 54% carbohydrate as either sucrose or cooked cornstarch for 9 wk. A phenotype effect was observed with body weight, fasting levels of serum insulin, triglyceride and total cholesterol, levels of serum insulin and glucose after an oral glucose load, and level of urine glucose (corpulent greater than lean), and with systolic blood pressure (corpulent less than lean). Only lean rats were hypertensive. Corpu
