Phthalates: the interplay between diet, obesity, diabetes, and gut microbiota.

Millions of tons of plastic are produced worldwide each year. Currently, it is almost impossible to avoid plastic and exposure to its effects. There are many chemical compounds that are used in its production. Some of them, classified as plasticizers, are phthalates, which are found in food packaging, toys, and many cosmetics. They give plastics durability, flexibility, and heat resistance. Humanity is exposed to these substances primarily through ingestion, i.e., processed food and its storage, and through inhalation of polluted air. Consequently, phthalates and their metabolites can be detec

Diet intake and adherence to recommendations in women with gestational diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is best managed via lifestyle changes. We aimed at investigating to which extent women with GDM adhered to dietary recommendations and to which extent an impact was observed on the glycaemic control compared to women without GDM. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Women with overweight/obesity (n = 349) were recruited in early pregnancy. GDM was diagnosed with a 2-h oral glucose tolerance test in mid-or-early pregnancy (median 25.9 and 14.7 gestational weeks). Dietary assessments included an index of dietary quality (good ≥ 10 and poor < 10/15 scores)

Assessment of diet quality in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Micronutrient malnutrition is a serious public health problem in most developing countries, including Morocco, due to poor and therefore lower quality diets that lack dietary diversity. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to assess dietary diversity and variety and their relationship with micronutrient adequacy in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried among 240 children and adolescents with T1D. Weight and height were measured and BMI was calculated. Dietary intake data were obtained from two 24-h recalls. A

Effects of Maternal Diabetes and Diet on Gene Expression in the Murine Placenta.

Adverse exposures during pregnancy have been shown to contribute to susceptibility for chronic diseases in offspring. Maternal diabetes during pregnancy is associated with higher risk of pregnancy complications, structural birth defects, and cardiometabolic health impairments later in life. We showed previously in a mouse model that the placenta is smaller in diabetic pregnancies, with reduced size of the junctional zone and labyrinth. In addition, cell migration is impaired, resulting in ectopic accumulation of spongiotrophoblasts within the labyrinth. The present study had the goal to identi

The Interplay Between Diet and the Epigenome in the Pathogenesis of Type-1 Diabetes.

The autoimmune disease, Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM), results in the destruction of pancreatic β-cells, and the International Diabetes Federation reports that its incidence is increasing worldwide. T1DM is a complex disease due to the interaction between genetic and environmental factors. Certain dietary patterns and nutrients are known to cause epigenetic modifications in physiological conditions and diseases. However, the interplay between diet and epigenetics is not yet well-understood in the context of T1DM. Several studies have described epigenetic mechanisms involved in the autoimmune

Low carbohydrate diets in eating disorders and type 1 diabetes.

Dietary intake requires attention in the treatment of both eating disorders and type 1 diabetes (T1D) to achieve optimal outcomes. Nutritional management of both conditions involves encouraging a wide variety of healthful foods in the context of usual cultural and family traditions. In recent times, low carbohydrate diets have seen a rise in popularity, both in T1D and in the general population. Low carbohydrate diets involve dietary restriction, although the extent depends on the level of carbohydrate prescription. Although dietary restriction is a known risk factor for eating disorders, ther

Combined diet and exercise interventions for preventing gestational diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is associated with a wide range of adverse health consequences for women and their infants in the short and long term. With an increasing prevalence of GDM worldwide, there is an urgent need to assess strategies for GDM prevention, such as combined diet and exercise interventions. This is an update of a Cochrane review that was first published in 2015. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of diet interventions in combination with exercise interventions for pregnant women for preventing GDM, and associated adverse health consequences for the mother

Cassava-enriched diet is not diabetogenic rather it aggravates diabetes in rats.

Chronic intake of cassava has been thought to play a role in the pathogenesis of diabetes. We investigated the effects of dietary cassava (Manihot esculenta), which naturally contains cyanogenic glycosides, in the progression of diabetes mellitus in rats. Diabetes was induced by five mild doses of streptozotocin, in male Wistar rats which were fed a standard or cyanide-free cassava (CFC) diet containing or not containing exogenous cyanide with or without methionine. Methionine was employed to counterbalance the toxic effects of cyanide. During diabetes progression, we determined glycaemia and

Patient decision making: strategies for diabetes diet adherence intervention.

BACKGROUND: Patient self-care is critical in controlling diabetes and its complications. Lack of diet adherence is a particular challenge to effective diabetes intervention. The Transtheoretical Model (TTM) of Change, decision-making theory, and self-efficacy have contributed to successful tailoring of interventions in many target behaviors. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to develop a diagnostic tool, including TTM measures for the stages of change, decisional balance, and self-efficacy, that pharmacists involved in diabetes intervention can use for patients resistant to a diet regi

The contentious nature of gestational diabetes: diet, insulin, glyburide and metformin.

Gestational diabetes (GD) develops because pregnancy increases requirements for insulin secretion while increasing insulin resistance. Women with GD often have impaired pancreatic beta-cell compensation for insulin resistance. The nature of GD is currently contentious, with debate about its existence, diagnosis and ramifications for both mother and offspring from pregnancy into later life. Also contentious are the outcomes of intervention with diet, insulin, glyburide (Glynase trade mark, Pharmacia Upjohn) and metformin (Glucophage trade mark, Bristol-Myers Squibb). There is consensus that wom

A diet enriched in protein accelerates diabetes manifestation in NOD mice.

Diet modifies the development of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus in animals and in humans. We examined female non-obese-diabetic (NOD) mice, a diabetes-prone mouse strain with 70% spontaneous diabetes incidence and metabolic abnormalities in non-overtly diabetic litters. They were fed a diet containing 55% (n = 27) or 15% (n = 26) protein, respectively, after weaning. At an age of 30 weeks, non-diabetic NOD mice were submitted to an intravenous glucose tolerance test (0.5 g/kg body weight; blood samples were taken after 2, 4, 8, 10, 15, 20 and 30 min) and to perfusion of the pancreas (stim

Comparison of the anti-diabetic effects of various grain and legume extracts in high-fat diet and streptozotocin-nicotinamide-induced diabetic rats.

The anti-diabetic properties of whole groats and dietary fibers from various grains and legumes are well known. Nevertheless, studies on the anti-diabetic effects of their extracts are limited, and it is difficult to compare their efficacy. This study investigated the anti-diabetic potential of ethanol extracts from oats (OE), sorghum (SE), foxtail millet (FE), proso millet (PE), adzuki bean (AE), and black soybean (BE) in a high-fat diet and streptozotocin-nicotinamide-induced diabetic rat models. The extracts, obtained using 99.9 % ethanol, were orally administered to diabetic rats for four

Amelioration of risk factors associated with diabetic nephropathy in diet-induced pre-diabetic rats by an uracil-derived diimine ruthenium(II) compound.

Diabetic renal injury advances through different stages of structural and functional changes in the glomerulus, therefore treatment during the pre-diabetic state could be used as therapeutic target in the management and prevention of diabetic nephropathy (DN). Once diagnosed, dietary interventions and pharmacological therapy have been recommended to manage DN and pre-diabetic related complications. However, poor patient compliance still results, therefore newer alternative drugs are required. High fat high carbohydrates (HFHC) diet was used to induce pre-diabetes for 20 weeks. After the induct

Diabetes risk reduction diet and the risk of oral and pharyngeal cancer.

PURPOSE: Diabetes has been associated with an increased risk of several neoplasms, including oral and pharyngeal cancer (OPC). We evaluated whether adherence to a diabetes risk reduction diet (DRRD) was inversely associated with the risk of OPC. METHODS: We analyzed data from a multicentric case–control study conducted between 1991 and 2009 in Italy. The study included 942 OPC cases and 2492 controls. A food frequency questionnaire was used to gather information on subjects’ usual diet. A DRRD score was computed based on 8 dietary components: cereal fiber, coffee, total fruit, nuts, polyunsatu

Low-carbohydrate diet in type 1 diabetes: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) consists of applying insulins with different action profiles and ingesting known amounts of nutrients from the diet. Although there is no specific recommendation regarding the distribution of these macronutrients, low-carbohydrate (LC) diets seem to show promise in some types of diabetes, but their role in T1D is still controversial, given the potential glycemic improvement, but with the concurrent possibility of changes in other parameters such as lipids. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the metabolic effects of these diets o

The DASH diet in diabetes related complications or comorbidities: an unexpected friend.

The global epidemic of diabetes and its complications poses a serious challenge to public health. Metabolic disorders and chronic hyperglycemia drive multi-system damage. The application of Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet has been extended from hypertension management to multi-dimensional integrated prevention and treatment of diabetes. DASH diet significantly reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes by optimizing blood glucose homeostasis, reducing hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), improving insulin sensitivity and insulin resistance, regulating lipid metabolism, and inhibiting oxidative

The gut dysbiosis of mothers with gestational diabetes and its correlation with diet.

The gut dysbiosis has been observed in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). However, changes in bacterial population are different among various countries due to genetic, environmental, and dietary differences. We compared the gut dominant phylum and some genus in GDM versus normo-glycemic pregnant in Iranian population, considering dietary intake. In this case-control study, 50 women diagnosed with GDM and 50 healthy pregnant, aged 18-35 yrs, during spring and summer, were participated. GDM was diagnosed based on the International Association of Diabetes and Pregnancy Groups criteria. The bac
