Maternal and perinatal magnesium restriction predisposes rat pups to insulin resistance and glucose intolerance.

According to the fetal programming hypothesis, impaired intrauterine development results in insulin resistance and associated metabolic disturbances. Recently, we reported increased body fat, a forerunner of insulin resistance, in the pups of mineral-restricted rat dams. To identify the causative mineral(s), the effect of magnesium restriction was assessed. Female weanling WNIN rats (n = 21) consumed ad libitum for 9 wk a 70% magnesium-restricted diet or were pair-fed a control (C) diet (n = 7). After 9 wk, they were mated with control males. Control dams and pups were fed the control diet thr

Effects of a carbohydrate-restricted diet on hepatic lipid content in adolescents with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: A pilot, randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has emerged as the most common form of liver disease among adolescents in industrialized countries. While lifestyle intervention remains the hallmark treatment for NAFLD, the most effective dietary strategy to reverse NAFLD in children is unknown. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the effects of a moderately CHO-restricted diet (CRD) vs fat-restricted diet (FRD) in adolescents with NAFLD on reduction in liver fat and insulin resistance. METHODS: Thirty-two children/adolescents (age 9-17) with obesity and NAFLD were r

Responses to dietary macronutrient distribution of overweight rats under restricted feeding.

Changes in protein and amino acid balance after energy-restricted feeding have scarcely been studied, although it has been suggested that protein utilization may depend on the macronutrient composition of the restricted diet. The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of dietary fat quality and content, during an energy-restricted regime, on body composition and protein metabolism. Therefore, diet-induced overweight rats were divided into three dietary groups: one group was fed on a control diet ad libitum (control) and the other two groups were fed energy-restricted diets (about 60

Increased low-density lipoprotein cholesterol on a low-carbohydrate diet in adults with normal but not high body weight: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol change with consumption of a low-carbohydrate diet (LCD) is highly variable. Identifying the source of this heterogeneity could guide clinical decision-making. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate LDL cholesterol change in randomized controlled trials involving LCDs, with a focus on body mass index (BMI) in kg/m2. METHODS: Three electronic indexes (Pubmed, EBSCO, and Scielo) were searched for studies between 1 January, 2003 and 20 December, 2022. Two independent reviewers identified randomized controlled trials involving adults consuming <130 g/d carb

Cardiovasoprotective foods and nutrients: possible importance of magnesium intake.

Various highly efficient cardiovasoprotective diets associate reduced intake of total and saturated fats, reasonable supply of monounsaturated fat and omega-3 fatty acids, moderate consumption of alcohol, increased intake of cereals, fruits, vegetables, fish and low fat dairy products. Among several protective nutrients magnesium should be given particular consideration because of the very frequent occurrence of chronic primary magnesium deficiency which appears to act as a cardiovascular risk factor and also reversely, because of the noticeable high level of the magnesium content in cardiovas

Ketogenic Diet: A Dietary Modification as an Anxiolytic Approach?

Anxiety disorders comprise persistent, disabling conditions that are distributed across the globe, and are associated with the high medical and socioeconomic burden of the disease. Within the array of biopsychosocial treatment modalities-including monoaminergic antidepressants, benzodiazepines, and CBT-there is an unmet need for the effective treatment of anxiety disorders resulting in full remission and recovery. Nutritional intervention may be hypothesized as a promising treatment strategy; in particular, it facilitates relapse prevention. Low-carbohydrate high-fat diets (LCHF) may provide a

Triglyceride synthesis in epididymal adipose tissue: contribution of glucose and non-glucose carbon sources.

The obesity epidemic has generated interest in determining the contribution of various pathways to triglyceride synthesis, including an elucidation of the origin of triglyceride fatty acids and triglyceride glycerol. We hypothesized that a dietary intervention would demonstrate the importance of using glucose versus non-glucose carbon sources to synthesize triglycerides in white adipose tissue. C57BL/6J mice were fed either a low fat, high carbohydrate (HC) diet or a high fat, carbohydrate-free (CF) diet and maintained on 2H2O (to determine total triglyceride dynamics) or infused with [6,6-(2)

Effects of low vs high fat diet in dogs with Cerulein-induced acute pancreatitis.

Recommendations regarding the fat content of the diet used in treating canine acute pancreatitis (AP) are controversial. Generally, a low-fat diet is recommended, but this is primarily based on experts' opinions rather than clinical studies. Our study aimed to compare the effects of two feeding tube diets with different fat concentrations in an experimental model of AP. AP was induced by repeated cerulein injections in 10 beagle dogs, which were divided into two groups based on the fat content of their feeding tube diets (high-fat and low-fat). All other treatments were identical in the two gr

Dietary methionine depletion and hydrogen sulfide-producing genes in perivascular adipose tissue of male Wistar rats.

Perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) regulates vascular tone, and high-fat diets reportedly lead to the loss of its anti-contractile properties. Methionine restriction recapitulates many caloric restriction metabolic effects and increases liver expression of activating transcription factor 4 (ATF4) and downstream targets with anti-contractile properties such as cystathionine-β-synthase (CBS) and cystathionine-γ-lyase (CSE). We hypothesized that dietary methionine restriction would prevent high-fat diet-induced PVAT dysfunction by increasing ATF4 expression. Male Wistar rats were fed control (C,

Preoperative dietitian-led calorie-restricted diet: impact on left hepatic lobe volume and laparoscopic upper GIT surgery visibility.

BACKGROUND: The surgical benefits of preoperative low- or very low-calorie diets (LCDs or VLCDs) in bariatric surgery patients have been widely studied. This study aimed to observe the changes in body composition and left hepatic lobe volume (LHLV) following a two-week dietitian-led calorie-restricted diet in non-bariatric laparoscopic surgery patients, where fatty liver often complicates the surgery. METHODS: The study included 47 patients scheduled for a hiatus hernia repair with an anti-reflux procedure. Participants underwent bioelectrical impedance measurements and abdominal ultrasounds

Dietary sulfur amino acid restriction improves metabolic health by reducing fat mass.

Diet interventions such as calorie restriction or time-restricted feeding offer potential for weight management, but long-term success is often hindered by poor adherence due to the rewarding effects of sugars. In this study, we demonstrate that sulfur amino acid restriction (SAAR) diets promote rapid fat loss without impairing appetite and physiological locomotion, outperforming diets with restricted branched-chain amino acids. Weekly cycling of SAAR diets preserves metabolic benefits, such as reduced fat mass and improved glucose sensitivity. Metabolic analysis and in vivo isotope tracing re

Establishment of a Neurodegenerative Charcot Mouse Model.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to mimic the changes from Charcot neuropathic arthropathy in humans by examining the effects of exposing diet-induced obese (DIO) mice to neurotrauma through a regimented running protocol. METHODS: Forty-eight male wild-type C57BL/6J mice were obtained at age 6 weeks and separated into 2 groups for diet assignment. After a 1-week acclimation period, half of the mice consumed a high-fat diet (60% fat by kcal) ad libitum to facilitate neuropathic diet-induced obesity whereas the other half were control mice and consumed an age-matched standard low-fat control diet (

Take the bull by the horns and tackle the potential downsides of the ketogenic diet.

The ketogenic diet (KD) is a distinctive dietary regimen known for its low-carbohydrate and high-fat composition. Recently, it has garnered considerable interest from the scientific community and the general population because of its claimed efficacy in facilitating weight reduction, improving the management of glucose levels, and raising overall energy levels. The core principle of the KD is the substantial decrease in carbohydrate consumption, which is subsequently substituted by ingesting nourishing fats. While the KD has promising advantages and is gaining popularity, it must be acknowledg

Obese reversal by a chronic energy restricted diet leaves an increased Arc NPY/AgRP, but no alteration in POMC/CART, mRNA expression in diet-induced obese mice.

Weight regain after weight loss is a major hurdle for combating obesity. The aim of this study is to examine orexigenic and anorectic neuropeptides of the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus (Arc) in response to weight loss after chronic energy intake restriction. Thirty mice were fed with a high-fat diet for 8 weeks and then classified as diet-induced obese (DIO; n=10) or diet-resistant (DR; n=10) mice according to the highest and lowest body weight gainers. Five mice from DIO and DR groups were placed on an energy restricted diet or continued on their high-fat diet ad libitum for 6 weeks. An additi

Serum Metabolomics Reveals Impaired Fatty Acid Oxidation and Elevated One-Carbon Demand in Cats Fed a Low-Protein Diet Compared with a Low-Fat or Low-Carbohydrate Diet.

BACKGROUND: Feline obesity remains a major metabolic health concern, yet the mechanistic effects of controlled macronutrient substitution on feline metabolism are poorly defined. Cats, as obligate carnivores, have high amino acid oxidation and limited carbohydrate metabolic capabilities that may result in metabolic shifts when dietary protein is substituted for dietary fat or for dietary carbohydrate, as nitrogen-free extract (NFE). OBJECTIVES: The aim of our study was to apply targeted metabolomics to assess fasted metabolic consequences of an isoenergetic macronutrient substitution diet des

The impact of low-fat and full-fat dairy foods on symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease: an exploratory analysis based on a randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a widely prevalent condition. High consumption of dairy foods and dietary fat are associated with worse GERD symptoms. However, existing data are inconsistent and mostly based on observational studies. The purpose of this exploratory analysis of a randomized controlled trial was to investigate the impact of low-fat and full-fat dairy food consumption on GERD symptoms. METHODS: Seventy-two participants with metabolic syndrome completed a 4-week wash-in diet during which dairy intake was limited to three servings of nonfat milk per week. Partic
