Effect of diet change in healthy dogs with subclinical cardiac biomarker or echocardiographic abnormalities.

BACKGROUND: A recent study showed higher high-sensitivity cardiac troponin I (hs-cTnI) concentrations in healthy dogs eating grain-free (GF) compared to those eating grain-inclusive (GI) diets. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: Healthy dogs with subclinical cardiac abnormalities eating GF diets at baseline will show improvements in cardiac biomarkers and echocardiographic variables after diet change, whereas healthy dogs eating GI diets at baseline will not improve. ANIMALS: Twenty healthy dogs with subclinical cardiac abnormalities (12 Golden Retrievers, 5 Doberman Pinschers, 3 Miniature Schnauzers).

Change to a healthy diet in people over 70 years old: the PREDIMED experience.

PURPOSE: It is difficult to change dietary habits and maintain them in the long run, particularly in elderly people. We aimed to assess whether adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) and cardiovascular risk factor were similar in the middle-aged and oldest participants in the PREDIMED study. METHODS: We analyzed participants belonging to the first and fourth quartiles of age (Q1 and Q4, respectively) to compare between-group differences in adherence to the nutritional intervention and cardiovascular risk factor (CRF) control during a 3-year follow-up. All participants underwent yearly

Influence of diet and sample collection time on 77 laboratory tests on healthy adults.

OBJECTIVES: We studied the effect of a standardized breakfast or lunch before blood sampling on 77 analytes. DESIGN AND METHODS: The mean difference between assays from 20 healthy adults was calculated on blood samples taken before and after food intake. Significant differences were tested using two-tailed Student t-test and compared to the acceptable limits derived from analytical and intraindividual biological variation. RESULTS: Most of the analytes investigated were not significantly affected by food intake. Six of them were influenced by breakfast or lunch: triglycerides, glucose, creat

Hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic potential of a high fiber diet in healthy versus diabetic rabbits.

The aim of this study was to investigate potential hypoglycaemic and hypolipidemic effects of Plantago ovata husk included in the diet, in healthy and diabetic rabbits. We also examined the effects of this fiber in other biochemical parameters. Two groups of 18 rabbits were used. The first group was fed with standard chow and the second with chow supplemented with Plantago ovata husk (3.5 mg/kg/day). On day 14 diabetes mellitus was induced by the intravenous administration of alloxan (80 mg/kg). After an oral glucose load (3 g), glucose, insulin, and other biochemical parameters were determine

Development and validation of a photographic food atlas of Middle Eastern Mediterranean diet: Toward improved understanding of traditional healthy and sustainable diets.

BackgroundMiddle Eastern Mediterranean diet (MEMD) is a traditional plant-based diet that is commonly consumed and increasingly popular, but not well studied in nutrition research. To facilitate the dietary assessment of MEMD, we developed and validated a photographic food atlas depicting a variety of foods and dishes consumed in the MEM region.MethodsThe photographic food atlas included 1,002 photos of 400 types of foods and traditional dishes photographed characterizing MEMD. Foods and dishes were prepared by a professional cook and were subsequently photographed as a series of photos depict

Antenatal Dietary Intervention Supports Postpartum Maintenance of Diet Quality, Fibre, and Micronutrient Intake: Findings From the Healthy Gut Diet Randomised Control Trial.

AIMS: Pregnancy is a key opportunity to support women in achieving healthy dietary patterns due to increased motivation and frequent exposure to healthcare professionals. However, it is unclear whether changes made during pregnancy can be maintained postpartum. This study examined the impact of an antenatal dietary intervention, initiated early to mid pregnancy, on postpartum dietary intake. METHODS: In the Healthy Gut Diet (HGD) study, participants were randomised to a dietary intervention or usual care. The intervention was integrated with behaviour change techniques and informed by the liv

Diet quality and associations with motivation and ability to consume a healthy diet among adolescents from urban low-income households in Bangladesh.

In low- and middle-income countries, particularly in urban areas, adolescent diets consist mainly of energy-dense and nutrient-poor foods, putting them at risk of malnutrition and non-communicable diseases (NCD). In Bangladesh, little is known about the diet quality of adolescents, their food choices and the drivers of such choices. This study assessed motivations and ability to consume a healthy diet among adolescent girls and boys from low-income urban families and how these drivers were associated with dietary diversity and diet quality. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 299 adol

Association between Baltic sea diet and healthy Nordic diet index with risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: a case-control study.

Recent evidence shows the beneficial effects of Baltic Sea diet score (BSDS) and healthy Nordic diet index (HNDI) on chronic diseases, however, there is no evidence to investigate them on the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The purpose of this study was to investigate the associations between BSDS and HNDI with the risk of NAFLD. In this case-control study, 552 people in good health and 340 people with NAFLD over the age of 18 took part. The evaluation of BSDS and HNDI employed a validated 168-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Binary logistic regress

Sprague Dawley Rats Gaining Weight on a High Energy Diet Exhibit Damage to Taste Tissue Even after Return to a Healthy Diet.

Many reports detail taste dysfunction in humans and animals with obesity. For example, mice consuming an obesogenic diet for a short period have fewer taste buds than their lean littermates. Further, rats with diet-induced obesity (DIO) show blunted electrophysiological responses to taste in the brainstem. Here, we studied the effects of high energy diet (HED)-induced peripheral taste damage in rats, and whether this deficiency could be reversed by returning to a regular chow diet. Separate groups of rats consumed a standard chow diet (Chow), a HED for 10 weeks followed by a return to chow (HE

Diet-induced Weight Loss and Phenotypic Flexibility Among Healthy Overweight Adults: A Randomized Trial.

BACKGROUND: The capacity of an individual to respond to changes in food intake so that postprandial metabolic perturbations are resolved, and metabolism returns to its pre-prandial state, is called phenotypic flexibility. This ability may be a more important indicator of current health status than metabolic markers in a fasting state. AIM: In this parallel randomized controlled trial study, an energy-restricted healthy diet and 2 dietary challenges were used to assess the effect of weight loss on phenotypic flexibility. METHODS: Seventy-two volunteers with overweight and obesity underwent a

Healthy diet attenuates the cardiovascular risk associated with elevated monocytes: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Elevated monocyte counts predict cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, but whether this inflammatory risk is modifiable by dietary patterns remains unknown. We investigated whether dietary quality modifies the association between peripheral monocyte counts and incident CVD and explored potential proteomic mechanisms. METHODS: This prospective cohort study included 26,585 participants from the UK Biobank without baseline CVD. Dietary quality was assessed using a Diet Quality Index (DQI) incorporating processed meat, fish, and plant-based food consumption. Monocyte counts were measured

Acute decrease of urine calcium by amiloride in healthy volunteers under high-sodium diet.

BACKGROUND: Amiloride is a competitive blocker of the epithelial sodium (Na) channel in the renal collecting duct. It is a less potent diuretic than thiazides or loop diuretics, but is often used in association with its potassium (K)-sparing profile. Whether amiloride has a hypocalciuric effect similar to thiazides remains unclear. Animal studies and experiments on cell lines suggested that amiloride increases calcium (Ca) reabsorption in the distal nephron, but human studies are scarce. METHODS: We performed a post hoc analysis of a study with 48 healthy males (mean ± standard deviation age,

Diet quality of individuals with rheumatoid arthritis using the Healthy Eating Index (HEI)-2010.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) afflicts approximately 1.5 million American adults and is a major cause of disability. As disease severity worsens, individuals with RA may experience functional decline that can impact dietary intake. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to assess the diet quality of individuals with RA using the Healthy Eating Index (HEI)-2010 and examine associations between diet quality and disease activity and functional status. METHODS: This cross-sectional study assessed diet quality and disease activity and functional status in adults with RA. Participants c

Subjective mood and energy levels of healthy weight and overweight/obese healthy adults on high-and low-glycemic load experimental diets.

Emerging evidence suggests a positive association of diet and obesity with depression. Researchers have examined several diet-mood hypotheses, including investigating the extent to which carbohydrates may impact mood. There is limited research on how glycemic load, a characteristic of carbohydrates, impacts mood in healthy adults. Eighty-two healthy weight and overweight/obese, but otherwise healthy, adults enrolled in a randomized, crossover controlled feeding study testing low-compared to high-glycemic load diets. All participants completed self-report mood and energy level questionnaires du

Digestion-resistant proteins support the healthy metabolite profiles associated with plant-based diets.

Plant-based diets are associated with both positive health outcomes and a diverse gut microbiome. Such diets alter the microbiome's metabolic outputs, including increasing phenylalanine-derived phenols associated with beneficial health outcomes (hippuric acid and 3-phenylpropionate), while decreasing tyrosine-derived phenols considered uremic toxins (phenol sulfate and p-cresol sulfate). The mechanisms linking plant eating to these phenol metabolites are not known. Plant-based foods are fiber and phytochemical rich. They also contain proteins that are resistant to host digestion and thus reach

Personalized nutrition for healthy aging: precision diets based on genomic, metabolic, and microbiome profiles.

The global increase in life expectancy has been accompanied by a parallel rise in the burden of chronic diseases, many of which are influenced by diet and lifestyle. Conventional dietary guidelines, though broadly beneficial, often fail to account for the wide heterogeneity in nutritional needs, metabolic responses, and health trajectories observed among older adults. This limitation has spurred interest in personalized nutrition-a precision approach that leverages individual genomic, metabolomic, and gut microbiome profiles to tailor dietary interventions for healthy aging. Recent advances in

Adherence to a healthy plant-based diet is associated with adiposity indicators in Costa Rican adults.

Plant-based diets have been associated with favourable health outcomes; however, not all plant-based diets are of the same quality. This study aimed to investigate the associations between three plant-based diet indices: overall plant-based diet index (PDI), healthy PDI (hPDI) and unhealthy PDI (uPDI) and measures of adiposity: wrist circumference, waist circumference, waist:hip ratio and BMI. This study used data from 2027 controls in the Costa Rica Heart Study, a case-control study. A validated FFQ was used to create the plant-based diet indices. Multivariable linear regression was used to e
