BACKGROUND: Patients with adenomatous colonic polyps are at increased risk of developing further polyps suggesting field-wide alterations in cancer predisposition. The current study aimed to identify molecular alterations in the normal mucosa in the proximity of adenomatous polyps and to assess the modulating effect of butyrate, a chemopreventive compound produced by fermentation of dietary residues.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was undertaken in patients with adenomatous polyps: biopsy samples were taken from the adenoma, and from macroscopically normal mucosa on the contralateral wall t

Polyamine (PA) deprivation is effective in prostate carcinoma models. We have assessed the observance by patients, tolerance and side effects of a PA-reduced diet (PRD) and intestinal decontamination (ID), in order to reduce PA dietary and intestinal bacterial pools, in metastatic, hormone-refractory prostate cancer (HRPC) patients. A total of 13 volunteers (mean age, 67+/-10 years) with metastatic HRPC were proposed for PRD and ID (0.75 g/day of oral neomycin every other week). The mean time from HRPC diagnosis to the start of the diet was 12+/-8 months. Of the total 13, seven patients had re

BACKGROUND: Fructose malabsorption is characterized by the inability to absorb fructose efficiently. As a consequence fructose reaches the colon where it is broken down by bacteria to short fatty acids, CO2 and H2. Bloating, cramps, osmotic diarrhea and other symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome are the consequences and can be seen in about 50% of fructose malabsorbers. We have previously shown that fructose malabsorption is associated with early signs of mental depression and low serum tryptophan concentrations. It was therefore of interest whether a fructose-reduced diet could not only impro

The effects of two reduced-protein diets and a canine maintenance diet on renal function, nutrition, serum and urine acid-base and electrolyte values, and divalent ion metabolism were compared in Beagle dogs with induced chronic renal failure. Two reduced-protein (18%) diets differed in their protein sources. One 18% protein diet was formulated using egg protein as the only protein source. The other 18% protein diet was formulated using a mixture of animal and vegetable proteins. The 42% protein diet contained a mixture of animal and vegetable protein sources. Results of this study indicate th

D-Psicose (DPS) serves as an optimal sucrose substitute, providing only 0.3% of sucrose's energy content, while exhibiting anti-inflammatory properties and inhibiting lipid synthesis. However, its efficacy in managing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) remains unclear. This study employed network pharmacology and molecular docking to identify potential DPS targets for NAFLD treatment. A high-fat diet was used to induce a NAFLD mouse model, with DPS administered in drinking water at 5% (high dose DPS group, DPSH group) and 2.5% (low dose DPS group, DPSL group) concentrations. After 12 we

Excessive dietary salt intake is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, immune dysregulation, and metabolic syndrome, representing a growing global health challenge. A high-salt diet (HSD) induces oxidative stress, inflammation, and myocardial fibrosis, ultimately leading to cardiac injury. Nevertheless, effective preventive interventions remain limited. Liquiritigenin (LG), a natural flavonoid isolated from liquorice, possesses potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. However, its cardioprotective potential in the context of HSD-induced damage has not been fully elucidate

Coccidiosis and rapid growth rate (GR) compromise bone mineralization in modern broilers. We tested the hypothesis that reducing GR via diet dilution during peak bone development will improve bone mineralization in both infected and uninfected broilers. A total of 384 male Ross 308 chicks were allocated to a basal grower diet (3,107 kcal/kg ME and 19.4% CP) diluted with 0, 5, 10, or 15% lignocellulose (n = 12 pens/treatment, 8 birds/pen) at day 10 of age. Prior to this, birds in each group received half the intended diet-dilution levels (day 8 to 10 of age) and a common starter diet (day 1 to

Excessive lipid accumulation in the liver can lead to fatty liver disease, which causes substantial economic losses in the poultry industry. To investigate whether irisin could alleviate hepatic lipid accumulation in 19-day-old chicken embryos or in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced models, we constructed transgenic chimeric chickens overexpressing irisin by embryonic injection of lentiviral or adenoviral vectors. The results showed that these chickens exhibited stable and sustained high-level expression of irisin in vivo, which significantly improved lipid content and liver injury markers in both s

This pilot study investigated the effects of a reduced sulfur (RS) diet on the gut microbiome composition and fecal metabolome in individuals with remitted or active ulcerative colitis (UC). Thirteen participants maintained their habitual diet (control), while nine followed an RS diet for eight weeks (Wk8). Stool and plasma samples were collected at the baseline and Wk8. The sulfur intake decreased in the RS group (-28 g/1000 kcal) versus the control group (-1.7 g/1000 kcal; p < 0.001). The RS group exhibited a significant decrease in lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (-5280 ng/mL), while the

KEY POINTS: Sodium reduction over a 4-week period decreased eGFR. Combining sodium reduction with the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension diet resulted in larger reductions in eGFR. Changes in diastolic BP seem partially responsible for the observed dietary effects.
BACKGROUND: A potassium-rich Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet combined with low sodium reduces BP. However, the effects of sodium reduction in combination with the DASH diet on kidney function are unknown. We determined the effects of sodium reduction and the DASH diet, on eGFR using cystatin C.

The use of copper nanoparticles (CuNP) in the diet of broiler chickens has been studied as a potential alternative to antibiotic growth promoters. This study aimed to analyse the antimicrobial properties of CuNP in the feed and water of broiler chickens against Salmonella Enteritidis and to assess the intestinal integrity and toxicity of CuNP supplementation in their diet. The antimicrobial activity of CuNP against S. Enteritidis was tested in microplates to evaluate three water samples with different mineral compositions and in an in vitro digestibility model that simulated the three primary

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Accumulating data on the consumption of plant-based diets and their impact on blood pressure indicate a consensus that plant-based diets are linked to reduced blood pressure. The suggested mechanisms of action are manifold, and, in this systematic review, we provide a summary of the most recent findings on plant-based diets and their impact on blood pressure, along with an analysis of the molecules accountable for the observed effects.
RECENT FINDINGS: The overwhelming majority of intervention studies demonstrate that plant-based diets result in lower blood pressure reading

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are a major cause of disability and the leading cause of death worldwide. To reduce mortality and morbidity, prevention strategies such as following an optimal diet are crucial. In recent years, low-gluten and gluten-free diets have gained strong popularity in the general population. However, study results on the benefits of a gluten-reduced or gluten-free diet are conflicting, and it is unclear whether a gluten-reduced diet has an effect on the primary prevention of CVD.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the effects of a gluten-reduced or gluten-free diet for

Dietary interventions are promising approaches to treat pain associated with metabolic changes because they impact both metabolic and neural components contributing to painful neuropathy. Here, we tested whether consumption of a ketogenic diet could affect sensation, pain, and epidermal innervation loss in type 1 diabetic mice. C57Bl/6 mice were rendered diabetic using streptozotocin and administered a ketogenic diet at either 3 weeks (prevention) or 9 weeks (reversal) of uncontrolled diabetes. We quantified changes in metabolic biomarkers, sensory thresholds, and epidermal innervation to asse

BACKGROUND: Tomatoes contain carotenoids that have the potential to alter the effects of external beam radiation therapy (EBRT).
OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that dietary lyophilized tomato paste (TP) would reduce apoptosis within carotenoid-containing nonneoplastic tissues in EBRT-treated TRansgenic Adenocarcinoma of the Mouse Prostate (TRAMP) mice.
METHODS: Male TRAMP mice (n = 73) were provided an AIN-93G diet or a modified AIN-93G diet containing 10% TP (wt:wt) at 4 wk of age. Prostate tumor growth was monitored by ultrasound. The caudal half of the mouse was irradiated with 7.5 Gy (Rad)

A walnut supplement for a Western-style diet in men was shown to improve sperm motility, vitality, and morphology. To gain further insights into factors underlying this improvement, we administered a parallel walnut-enriched diet to mice [including those with a defect in sperm motility due to deletion of Plasma Membrane Ca2+-ATPase 4 (Pmca4-/- )] to determine if there is a similar improvement that is accompanied by reduced sperm membrane peroxidative damage. Although sperm vitality and acrosome reaction rate were unaffected, the diet led to a significant improvement in motility (P < 0.05) and

High-fat (HF) diets of 2 weeks have been shown to accelerate gastrointestinal (GI) transit and decrease satiety. However, the effects of HF diets on GI transit over longer periods than 2 weeks are unknown. We hypothesize that over 4 weeks, GI transit of a HF test meal will accelerate. The study was a repeated measures design with 10 male volunteers completing a 1-week HF diet intervention and 7 completing a 4-week HF diet intervention with testing once a week on the same day throughout the 4 weeks. Gastric emptying (GE) was measured using the (13)C-octanoic acid breath test and mouth-to-caecum
